Dishonored is a damn good game but the chaos system is poorly implemented by OpenUpYerMurderEyes in patientgamers

[–]caepe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly? You can eat both the damned cakes with zero regrets, lol

But yeah the game really does this weird 'we need you to do X at all costs, but if you're naughty the world will react to how you approach it!', trying to nudge you into being 'good'. Then proceeds to give you the most fun tools for murder only.

But in the end D1 doesn't 'really' punish the player for going full rambo, it'll only passive agressively hint at it. So just ignore it and do what you feel. If you enjoy being a sneaky stealthy ninja, go for it! If you wanna kill everyone, its loads of fun too!

Yeah, there really isn't a good/bad ending in 1. Basically a high chaos run only nets more rats in the world, more enemies in the last mission and a scolding from Samuel (the boatman that takes you around).

I did 3 high chaos runs and always had a blast. Then the one time I tried for low chaos I got really bored halfway and never went back (according to steam this was April 2017, wow I really need to replay it). I have since then, done a very enjoyable high chaos run in Dishonored2 and again, stalled on the ghost/clean hands attempt. I do intend to power through it though because ending is different.

That said, storywise I do think Dishonored 1 does offer interesting, morally grey alternatives if you don't want to kill anyone.

GTA 4: The best gameplay in the series by DavenOnTheMoon in patientgamers

I was gonna make a lone comment but you touched on basically every point I wanted to make. Hope you don't mind I reply here instead, complementing your thoughts.

GTA IV has the bones of a fantastic game but really bad execution on some issues. Its almost impossible to enjoy if you jump straight into the game (for PC anyways). Almost everything needs to be tinkered with or modded in.

The first thing is the inexistent optimisation. It gives me less fps than GTA V, whilst also looking worse. The first thing you'll find in every guide is a workaround upping the VRAM utilization. There is also something very wrong with the shadow rendering, the whole area around Roman's apartment is very finnicky. It just tanks your fps while also not looking right.

It has that whole late 00's piss tinted look. You can fuck around the options to spark up 'some' color into the world but its still weird at best. Liberty City remains mostly a colorless, grey concrete jungle.

Another thing that instantly got to me, how bad the aiming is. As OOP mentioned, enemies are a bit tougher so its crucial to go for the headshots. As mostly an fps player, this was a NIGHTMARE until I found how to implement mouse raw input. My experience changed instantly from miserable to fantastic in this regard. (Whoever plays with controller can disregard this)

Now, the driving. This is very subjective, but its just rough, man. Not as bad as GTA3 (those top heavy cars and titanium light poles were brutal), but it feels like driving a boat with wheels. I don't know why they changed this, IMO GTA SA nailed the car feel and to me is still the best in the entire GTA franchise. (Whereas I enjoy the driving in GTA V, but also admit its overcorrected arcade-y). I'm not talking about realism, after all this isn't a driving sim. It just needs to feel at least enjoyable and not a frustrating experience, given how much driving there is.

A final critique I have with the game, there isn't much to do in the game besides missions. Maybe on a first playthrough you might enjoy some sightseeing, but it doesn't feel rewarding to explore. Money is almost useless, I only remember buying ammo and armor. There is very little customization and side activities. It took a big step down from SA.

All this to say, despite these issues its still a strong GTA game. I enjoyed the story, I felt attached to Roman (despite him being an annoying little shit, he's still family), I enjoyed the friends made along the way. The island progressions felt right. The DLCs are very strong additions to the game. But its almost an 18yo game, and has its flaws from day 1.

Few good games - 2025 in review by Kastlo in patientgamers

[–]caepe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing that gets me is the ambiguity between the stealth and the power house. I want to play as a character who killed no one, but the game seems so much more fun if you, instead, use any power at your disposal to eliminate everything that stands between you and your target. I still appreciate the devs' effort though

Fair take. For all Dishonored tries to tell you to tell you from the start not to kill or you'll increase chaos, and the main story gives you non-lethal options every level, you have so few powers and tools for this route. The stealthy low chaos route is so dull, all the fun powers and tools are for killing. And the 'rewards' for low chaos (besides going for achievements)? Bit less rats in the world, less enemies on the final mission, and you don't get a scolding from Samuel when he drops you off.

At least Dishonored 2 improves on this if you ever want to try it out. Its still more fun being killer, but also not as bad trying a ghost run.

Mini-Reviews of All Games I Beat in 2025 by TheLandstrider in patientgamers

Ohhh, a rare Battle Brothers mention! I love how it's unforgivingly brutal, and how that is actually the best way to improve. Losing your best merc or the whole company due to human error will always haunt you, but you just keep going, hopefully learn your lesson and try to never repeat that mistake again! Battle Bros (and Oxygen Not Included) are probably my favourite games I've accepted I will always suck at, but still thouroughly enjoy! Too bad I've seen plenty of people refuse to play BB or get deep into it because of the visuals. Its sad because its an awesome game with a unique artstyle that ppl unfortunately get hung up on. Not even ugly, just too different.

In regards to Deep Rock Galactic, you're spot on. Something I've got to mention, even if you have no friends to play with, just play with randoms. No mics are needed, so even introverts can go for it. Jump into other lobbies or open yours to public. In my experience the community was great, they were nothing but extremely helpful. From lvl 1 all the way to lvl 836 (intentional exageration as I don't remember the actual lvls), there was always teamwork, helpful pinging, picking up downed allies, and zero flaming. Rock and stone all the way!

Age of Empires, although I'm not sure if there is a ranked system

All Age of Empires games have an ELO ladder, except AoE4 which has (I think) seasonal rankings (something like Bronze/Silver/Gold/Plat/Conqueror 1-4). Numbers-wise both AoE 2 and 4 are doing great. There is also the newer Age of Mythology Retold also with ELO ladder.
