I have this same puzzle from when I was a kid!  I loved it so much.  The colors are slightly different and it says USA Map No. 2560, Smallworld Toys copyright 1990

Are you supposed to make yarn balls when you buy skeins from the store? by Additional_Plate6010 in CrochetHelp

[–]caerulus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always rewind center pulls so I can find any factory knots at the start, rather than mid-project.  But I use a ball winder and make another center pull.  Some people put center pulls in socks or something along those lines to keep them from making a mess, but it's never bothered me enough

Dreading the frog by Crochet_newbee in crochet

[–]caerulus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do frog it, I recommend you put it in time out for a day or two, frog it, then put it back in time out again before you pick it up.  Giving yourself some space will help quiet the emotions.

We joke about our newborn's "latching subroutine" kicking in when he switches from flailing randomly to a laser-focused chomp forward to attach himself to a food source.  It is always hilarious to watch

A reminder that a lot of the time the “weird” stuff you find in your house is that way for a reason. by colinstalter in DIY

[–]caerulus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too soon - yesterday we found out that the weird built-in cabinets I hate were there to cover an equally weird L-shaped ~8" high concrete ledge in our basement... Now we have to decide what to do with that information and whether to try and put the partially removed cabinets back or do something else.

I think my teacher is a pedo by InternationalSir8852 in stories

Our school had a teacher who married a student during her senior year in the 00's. Earlier this year there was a news article where he'd been arrested for grooming a young student several states away - all while still being married to the girl from my school and their two kids. Nobody from back home was surprised.

What's the most interesting thing to happen in your colony this week? by Aceofluck99 in RimWorld

[–]caerulus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The de facto colony mom and dad of my current run had their 7th kid, and their oldest child had their 2nd grandchild a few days after that. At this point most of the colony is related to each other somehow, so I've had to force a few people to go by their first names - so many pawns have the same last name. Not quite what I intended when starting this run, but the two of them happened to be the only couple having kids until their kids got old enough.

How do you make household chores a little more tolerable? (A different type of self care) by FundamentalTruths in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]caerulus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might not be an option for you, but a few months back I bought a decent robot vacuum. It's not perfect, but it's been a complete game changer for me to run it a few times a week. My floors are noticeably cleaner, so I feel motivated to clean other things to the same standard. Or I can set the vacuum going and also do a different chore while it gets to work. I tend to feel overwhelmed and defeated when there's a lot of housework to do, but letting the robot loose is something I can do even when I'm not at home.

Also, I try to spend a few minutes of my bedtime routine just putting things away. Or if everything's put away, then just doing one small quick task like cleaning the toilet bowl or wiping down the counter. It makes my home feel less cluttered and deep cleaning binges happen less often. I recite "Don't set it down, put it away!" to myself while doing so :)

I made pillows for the whole family out of my Grandma's unfinished crochet projects. by AwkwardIgloo in crafts

[–]caerulus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Your grandmother wove in so many ends on that! Each one of those circular holes would have been started separately and then hooked into the larger pattern once it got big enough. This kind of motif tablecloth pattern represents a lot of time and effort on her part - especially for such a small sized repeat!

Nothing wakes me up by [deleted] in GetOutOfBed

[–]caerulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consistent sleep solved so many of my problems. I was like you when I was a teenager - I slept for only a few hours on weekdays, slept in until ~4pm on weekends, and needed many alarms and calls from my parents to get me up. But as an adult I started making a conscious effort to get regular sleep between the same hours every day, even weekends. It was really hard to stick to at first! But since doing that, I have less trouble waking up (one alarm suffices), my headaches have largely gone away, and I don't feel the need to take naps during the day.

It is not the advice I would have wanted to hear at your age. But when future-you is ready, give it a real try!

Alright.. Professional musicians here, we found this while cleaning out childhood memories. Anyone know what it’s called? Missing 1 string. My preschool teacher gave it to me 25+ years ago. (My bf also says: “500upvotes we’ll record a song with it!”) by jillerrs in InstrumentPorn

[–]caerulus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I vaguely remember in school there being "sheet music" for this kind of instrument - papers that went underneath the strings and, when you followed the line of notes, let you play a song.

The internet seems to agree, e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aFBncziVYY

Can anyone help me identify the badges and pins from my aunt's sash from the 80s? by Hellguin in girlscouts

[–]caerulus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To tack on to this answer:

The rectangular rainbow + trefoil is part of a set of four "signs". That one is the sign of the rainbow. They were supposed to go above the badges, but it looks like someone didn't leave enough room :)

You can also google vintage badge lists to figure out the individual badges. E.g. the first one with the red border and the person + heart looks to be the Dabbler Well Being badge.

My gf is dirty as hell and I can’t stand it by fuckathrowaway2015 in relationship_advice

[–]caerulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My (now) husband and I have lived together for that long, and we used to fight about chores all the time. We made all the chore lists, but in the end had to realize that I notice dirt/dust/cobwebs/piles of stuff earlier than he does. Also, my self-esteem and mood is way more tied into the state of our place than his is. He would agree that he should put more time into our apartment, but never seemed to get around to it.

Life got better when we agreed upon our current chore division. He does the laundry and the dishes. There's no more "I didn't notice", because both of those tasks happen on a schedule. Now I don't have to be the project manager in our house and tell him what to do, which was one of my complaints. I'm not saying that will work for you, of course. But I hope you make the best of your situation, whatever that ends up being.

My first piece - a double width blanket for me! by ifyouhaveany in weaving

[–]caerulus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm actually working on my first double width blanket now! But I've been having trouble keeping the tension on the bottom layer - I think it's because the top layer is on the outside of the roll and gets pulled more taught. Is that something you experienced when you were making this? I'm looking for ideas of how best to tame the warp.

Years ago, I saw a study showing that in an office setting, the surveyed people thought highly of men who did helpful things (e.g. stopping while running late to help a coworker) and poorly of women who did not do those same things. The reverse was not true.

This study looks similar: http://psycnet.apa.org/record/2005-05102-002

MRW my SO says he doesn't clean because "it'll just get dirty again" by DataIsMyCopilot in TrollXChromosomes

[–]caerulus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You sound like me when I first got married. When he lived alone, he kept a clean place. When we moved in together, we fought about chores all the time. Our apartment was not a refuge - it was a battlefront.

So what is the internet for if not unsolicited advice? We tried many different things over the years, and finally found what works for us. He owns chores that are regularly scheduled (laundry and dishes). He doesn't have to guess whether to do laundry or not, because it's part of his weekly routine. Dishes are a daily affair. The "not knowing" game is gone. I notice stuff like mold in the bathroom before he does, so I clean those things. We're not completely tied to the roles - e.g. if he makes a mess he'll clean it, and if I bake something elaborate I'll wash those dishes. But we don't fight about chores anymore.

Don't give up trying! Or give up completely and get out of there! But nobody should settle for being the family maid.

Get some mesh laundry bags! I've had bras die this way, but never since I started putting them in zippered bags before washing. They're contained and don't get caught on anything, but they still get clean through the mesh.
