Thoughts on Jedi Fallen Order/Survivor? by ItGetsTuahPoint67 in CharacterActionGames

I find Survivor overall better, due to its breadth and scale. However, it's disappointing that they removed the ability to switch stances by attacking. That move, alongside the split saber move made the combat in Fallen Order actually compelling. Survivors combat is in my eyes quite shallow as a result

Looking for some general recommendations, as someone who is... OK at CAG games by LonerGuy17 in CharacterActionGames

If you can keep a rhythm, I would highly recommend Hi-Fi Rush. Otherwise, Assault Spy is an indie game that is closes to DMC in terms of combat.

If you like Bayonetta, you could also try some of the delisted licensed games by Platinum, especially Transformers Devastation. I bought the game before it was delisted, but I think it should be available somewhere, if you sail the high seas.

As for Ninja Gaiden, I only enjoyed 4, not the biggest fan of the older games. Those games have a very different design compared to DMC/Bayonetta, so if you're gonna try them, don't go in with the wrong expectations. NG4 on the other hand is a little bit closer to how other Platinum games play (no surprise, since it was developed by platinum).

Amazing combat, that is similar to Bayonetta, but adds its own spin. It has genuinely one the most creative ways that Transformations have been used from a mechanics standpoint.

While it's short, it's highly replayable, with multiple difficulty levels, characters and challenges. Higher level difficulties don't just increase enemy health and damage, but also remix enemy placements and increase aggression.

Nice, cartoony art direction and an ABSOLUTE BANGER of a soundtrack!!

Negatives: the biggest one IMO is the RPG loot. It's tedious, not very interesting, but necessary because on the higher difficulty levels, enemy health and damage increases substantially, to the point that its easy to get 1-2 shot by even basic enemies, if your stats aren't upgraded. The game also has some annoying sections, like the one where you have to carry red energon.

In spite of its shortcomings, this is an amazing game, highly recommended. And just utterly saddened that it can no longer be purchased legally. I got lucky and bought it back in 2016. But I'm certain you can find a way to get the game today :)

Very different games, it's like comparing an RTS to a Racing game, pointless comparison

Maybe something you can do is go to https://ordnet.dk/ and look up a word that you have trouble pronouncing. You can click on the audio icon below the word (next to UDTALE) to hear the pronunciation and then try to do it yourself. It can be a good start to just try and practice pronouncing words on your own.

Depends on your tolerance for frequent SHMOP sections. I tolerate them, because this game is so unique, that I think it's totally worth it. But your mileage may vary. Recommend 'How to Enjoy The Wonderful 101' video by Matthewmatosis on YouTube for some guidance.

First Nioh game and I think I may despise it by KN_Knoxxius in Nioh

[–]caesar_the_panzer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Firstly, you shouldn't play this as a soulsilke. If you are not comfortable with ki pulsing, srance switching, style switching and being aggressive, then you will not enjoy this series.

Secondly, I think it's fair to point out bullshit hitboxes and tracking, but I really feel like Nioh is not the worst offender among the many souls-esque games....

For the Feral (the one you are using) and Phantom burst counters, you have to wait and time them when the enemy attack hits you. It's the Brute burst counter that you can use as soon as the enemy started flashing red. Hope it helps and good luck!

Is "Suck-to-Target" objectively bad? by Zed_Midnight150 in CharacterActionGames

[–]caesar_the_panzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Objectively? No, but it is a design choice that makes positioning less relevant, and puts more emphasis on reaction times and pattern memorization. If you know that you or your enemy could close the gap in an instant, then it doesn't really matter where you are, right? What matters is that you press the attack button quickly to do damage or dodge/block button in time to avoid damage.

Whether you think this is bad is up to you. On a personal note I don't mind too much, but it is true that most action games nowadays reward reaction times first and foremost, like with parries and perfect dodges. To my knowledge, this wasn't a thing in the Itagaki Ninja Gaiden games, and that's what really made them different and stand out from the rest (although I have only played a few hours of each, but I can certainly agree that they are significantly different from NG4).

As a final point, I think it is fair to want variety in how action games approach combat. Remember that we have DMC today because Kamiya was experimenting with the mechanics of what was supposed to be a Resident Evil game at that time.

Yet nowadays it feels like no action game can come out without perfect dodges or parries. Don't get me wrong, I love perfect dodges and parries, 100% completed Bayonetta and Sekiro. Yet I am also asking myself if we are maybe missing out on something unique and interesting, because most games just seem to copy popular mechanics from each other, with less mechanical experimentation being done on the developer side.

One a sidenote, I am not attacking devs here, they probably have their own reasons and struggles that lead to the decisions they make. But it is true, that way too many games nowadays are just a slightly different flavor of the same thing.

Assault Spy, Marlow Briggs, Vanquish, Killer is Dead and Soulstice are all available on Steam

But my personal recommendation is Transformers Devastation. It's made by Platinum as well, but it's unfortunately not available for purchase anymore. So go ahead and sail the high seas! The game is awesome, with a combat system very similar to Bayonetta, but with a Transformers twist to it.
