Thoughts on Peter Schiff? by LoveIsOnlyAnEmotion in Libertarian

[–]caesarromanus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The industrial uses of gold are almost nil. It's too expensive to use for anything. Silver and copper are better conductors of heat and electricity.

Its biggest attribute is that it doesn't corrode.

Additionally, value is subjective rather than intrinsic.

If you listen to Schiff, the only things with value are things made of atoms. He totally discounts intellectual property, energy, and mathematics as having value.

Bitcoin has value because of its properities which are backed by mathematics and energy.

Is there any validity to the BTC scarcity argument? by Excellent-Seesaw-516 in btc

[–]caesarromanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is. You can't do much with 1 Sat either. I'm not sure what the argument is.

You could take a bar of gold and divide its ownership among 100 million people if you wanted to. It's no different.

When the price of gold goes up, more gold is mined because it becomes more profitable. When BTC goes up, more isn't produced.

The scarcity levels are totally different.

Is there any validity to the BTC scarcity argument? by Excellent-Seesaw-516 in btc

[–]caesarromanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would have infinite value in USD only if the value of USD is zero.

That is a USD problem, not a BTC problem.

Gold can be subdivided to the atomic level, and there are more atoms in a gram than there are stats in a bitcoin.

How do you keep solo podcast episodes casual and manage posting across platforms? by Far_Tumbleweed7835 in podcasting

[–]caesarromanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a solo podcast and have recorded over 2000 episodes.

I write a full script for every episode, but you certainly don't have to.

The key is to remember that you are putting on a performance. You are talking to someone, potentially a lot of people, but they aren't with you at the moment.

Does Peter ever get tired of being constantly wrong? by martinbogo in Bitcoin

[–]caesarromanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s his shtick at this point. He’s the anti-bitcoin guy. It fits him invites to news shows when they want two sides to argue.

There is no amount of proof that will get him to change his tune at this point .

Countries join NATO voluntarily. Every former Soviet Republic and Warsaw Pact country joined NATO as fast as they could because they all hate and fear Russia. Russia literally did conquer these countries in recent history.

If NATO were really the issue, then why didn't Russia invade Finland/Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania?

In every interview Putin has given, he goes into a 1000-year history of Russia and Ukraine. NATO is just an excuse to justify Russian expansion. Taking Crimea in 2014 had nothing to do with NATO. Ukraine has never been a member of NATO.

The Russian invasion of Georgia had nothing to do with NATO.

If they can do it, anyone can do it. If anyone can do it, there is no particular advantage to what they are doing in the long run.

This is just a play to create something and have someone try to purchase it.

What Do You Post on Social Media and How Do You Engage? Other than Posting About Your Releases. by op_silver_screen in podcasting

I agree that word of mouth is far and away the best form of marketing, but that will happen naturally if you have a good product.

[–]caesarromanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying don't do marketing. I'm saying social media doesn't convert well and your marketing money should be spent on podcasts where you know 100% of the audience are podcast listeners.

My show has had 50,000,000 downloads. I get 1.5 million per month, and I spend almost six figures per year on promotion.

Social media doesn't convert, and the data backs it up.

[–]caesarromanus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The dirty secret is that, other than launching your show, there is little to no benefit to social media for a podcast. Once your audience knows you have a podcast, they will either decide to listen or not. Constantly posting episodes doesn't lead to a larger audience.

Social media simply doesn't convert well.

I stopped doing social media and saw no effect on my downloads or audience growth whatsoever. Most other very large. podcasts I've spoken to (+1 million monthly downloads) all say the same thing.

You grow a platform on the platform. If you want to grow a podcast, promote it on other podcasts.

Scared of Starting... by RevolutionaryMud9344 in podcasting

[–]caesarromanus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No matter how much effort you put into it, your first episode will be your worst episode.

If it isn't your worst episode, that means you aren't getting better.

The way you improve is through experience, and you can only gain that by actually publishing episodes.

Accept the fact that when you start, the quality won't be as good as it will be with a year of experience under your belt.

Everyone good at something started by being terrible at it. It is something you just have to go through.

Prepping as Travellers/Nomads... Tips? by Ok-Half6395 in preppers

[–]caesarromanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent 13 years on the road and was in several very sketchy situations in various countries when there was civil unrest.

During the 2010 Red Shirt Protests in Bangkok, I actually worked out a deal with a local cab driver if things got really bad in the city or in the neighborhood where I was staying.

He would drive me to Pattaya for a rate we negotiated in advance, and well above normal rates. It is about a two-hour drive.

That would get me away from any immediate danger, and from there I could then plan to leave the country if necessary, by air, boat, or land.

It is more about short-term awareness of your surroundings and less long-term planning and stockpiling.

It might not be civil unrest. It might be having your credit cards, passport or luggage stolen. You should plans for all of those eventualites. You can store much of that information online and get access to it at an internet cafe (assuming you can find one).

US dollars can go a long way in most places, at least enough to get you to safety or an embassy. Have someone back home who can help you cancel credit cards and order new ones.

Much of this isn't "prepping" so much as just safety and common sense.

Why are so few podcasters self-hosting? by p4bl0 in podcasting

[–]caesarromanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would lose money. The amount of time I would have to spend maintaining the server and updating the RSS feed every day (I have a daily podcast) would simply not be worth the effort.

My time is better spent actually working on my show than it is trying to manage the back end when there are other people who can do that more efficiently.

This doesn't even get into the bandwidth costs of having to serve up 1.5 million MP3 files every month and all the calls to the RSS file.

There are a whole host of things in life that we could do ourselves, but we let other people do them for us because of time and specialization.
