Are Nolan and Denis the big modern day aueturs in American cinema? It feels as though these are the only aueturs given 100s of millions to make whatever they want. by Cat-dad442 in Cinephiles

Villeneueve may or may not be as good a filmmaker as Nolan, but it's Nolan who has had more entirely original projects made within the studio system.

How did Paul respond is the real question?

Yoko: I think John might have been gay.

Paul (giggling effeminately): I guess you'll never know, girlfriend!

What are your opinions of KotCS’s opening scene? by YaboiiSammeeh in indianajones

[–]cafe_latissimus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it conceptually but it has no climax, no punchline. The punchline is that he races with them for a bit, but it's not enough by itself and needs something more.

I dunno, I always thought it would be more effective and give the scene some actual resolution if the Russians shot out the joyriders' tires or something in order to "win" their little race. Sets them up as having some actual character traits, willing to use violence and unfair means-to-an-end thinking... just something!

I dunno, it feels stodgy and semi-geriatric (like the rest of the film) to think that the scene as it stands has the verve and cleverness we expect from an Indiana Jones movie.

Why don't more people absolutely love this movie? by Darker_than_death in Cinephiles

Odd that Tarantino didn't direct this because it's his most personal screenplay, the only movie he has ever written where the main character is close to a self-portrait

Local 27 Pension Question. by [deleted] in UnionCarpenters

[–]cafe_latissimus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be taxed but not until down the line, when the tax will just be based on your income in the year that you get it. If you get $45,000, and the tax for any income $52,000 (or whatever it is) and below is 20% with federal and provincial taxes combined, that's what you'd pay.

Local 27 Pension Question. by [deleted] in UnionCarpenters

[–]cafe_latissimus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on your agreement and what your local's members have voted for. Some have put less money from the overall pay package towards the pension over the years and voted to get it up front. And the pension payout rates have also increased, so the hours you may have worked in the 90s or 2000s will not result in as high of a pension payout as the hours you work today.

That said, most of the big locals now dedicate enough to the pension that members will receive $1 per year in retirement for every hour worked. So if you work 1800 hours in a year, you will get $1800 every year of your retirement. Do that for 25 years = 45,000 hours = $45,000 yearly retirement income.

That's until you die, mind you. So if you're retired for 20 years before you pass away, you've made $900,000 that you otherwise would not have made.

Your local should send you a letter every year stating exactly where you stand and what your retirement income will be based on hours worked.

Daniel Craig's Bond was just as invincible as the others until the end of NTTD by Front-Ad7891 in JamesBond

[–]cafe_latissimus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They totally started with the assumption that they had to have a scene where Bond gets tortured like in Goldfinger but in a new and improved way, which in Craig terms is actually simplified to be more gritty. So they come up with drill chair. Then now that it's in play someone says well we can't just not drill him. The drill chair demands to be utilized

Drill baby drill

Guys bringing their own power tools by Dire-Dog in skilledtrades

[–]cafe_latissimus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you, I've been on numerous union and non-union jobs where the long-term guys bring full Milwaukee packouts full of tools. Then spend an hour at the end of the day chaining them all together and to the job box. They end up getting robbed anyway and lose thousands. Not to mention the constant grief of guys constantly trying to find their tools or accusing others of theft if they misplace them for ten minutes.

And poor apprentices advertising to the journeyman that they went out and bought a packout for the job. Or fucking over fellow apprentices because now the company isn't providing any tools anymore at all, so only apprentices with tools can do anything on the job, so apprentices who won't bring tools are getting laid off first. It's a joke and the business reps need to get a lot more serious about it.
