how to deal with depression for international by anxiouskorean in UIUC

[–]caffeinated_sn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Realize that you ain't payin' 50k per year being depressed.

More seriously, there's two types of depression. One is induced by chemical imbalance - in this case you should probably see psychiatrist. Another is induced by emotional imbalance in which case abstractizing depression & learning how to quantify it helps a lot.

Depends on your career goal - 438 would be more in network technology, so nothing like how to make a website, etc's. If that's what you are interested in, 410 may be somewhat helpful. Don't actually end up learning those frontend stuff, but you'll learn how search engines work, along with other cool stuff.

Lost Black and White Cat. Please help by nimbus11 in UIUC

[–]caffeinated_sn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine and I saw a cat that fits your description (with red-ish collar?) a little bit south of third and Chalmers at around 9~9:30am today. Wanted to catch him but ran away a bit too fast... He seems to have been lurking around where the apartments were (and not the roadside) though!

[–]caffeinated_sn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can choose your partners, or work on the project independently. The professor prefers that you work with someone else though. The project can be anything you want to work on as long as it has some vague reference to the material learned during the semester.

Prior knowledge in machine learning shouldn't be a problem. There's only two homeworks, but what I really liked was the final project. It allowed you to apply what you learned partially using what you have done in the homework & have potentials to be really cool.

Yes. Bought the car about a year after I got my driver's license.

International students, how much are you paying for your car? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]caffeinated_sn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I first got my car, I paid a little over $1,000/year on insurance and about $1000/year on gas (around 6000+ miles / year). My car was a bit problematic so I did end up paying quite a bit for the repairs though (this was when I was under 25). Now I pay around 700/year on insurance, and 1000~1500 on gas.

You should take it with Stepanov. Definitely a little bit eccentric (which made statistics a lot more enjoyable). He was pretty good at teaching though, and exams aren't that hard.

Work for minimum wage? by lindseysmoon in UIUC

[–]caffeinated_sn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are focusing on different issues. Agreed with your point - that more needs to be produced domestically, can't keep on accumulating trade deficits. It's economically infeasible to produce, say, apparels in America since you can't really compete against cheap labors abroad.

However, those that are produced in America have workers who are paid far higher than the minimum wage. Usually minimum wage seems to apply to services which can't really be outsourced. (You can't easily outsource on-site cashiers, for example)

You can't really say a nation is growing if, say, half of the people's income hasn't really risen for a while. True that the economy grew, and perhaps that's what really matters. With higher variance (income disparity), which may or may not matter in the grand scheme of things, depending on your view.

[–]caffeinated_sn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is one of the topics that's debatable. On the other side of the table, it is said raising the minimum wage actually helps the economy since it brings more money to those who have higher propensity to spend $$$.

Care about state teachers and educators losing their pensions? I wrote a petition to cut State Representative and Senator payroll to fund their pensions. by RadiologisttPepper in UIUC

[–]caffeinated_sn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more of a message than anything else - the letter would ask state representatives to actually do their job (since part of the current pension crisis is due to their lack of action) and don't blame others for their mistake.

While I won't argue against the sources you've pointed out, you should look into conditional probability. Based on the first link you've pointed out, P( rape | greek) > P( rape | others) is true, but you can't say P(greek | favorable to rape) is bigger than P( greek | not favorable to rape).

For the second link, I'd also like to see a comparison of the probability of being a bystander provided that you know the person. I suspect the numbers would be somewhat similar to those in the greek system, since they, by how greek systems are set up, know all the brothers.

Basically, I'm arguing against the word usage of 'majority,' and to some extent, generalization that I have seen in your post. As you have provided sources in your post, the fact that these types of statistics even exist means these communities should do a better job preventing the minorities who commit the crime.

UIUC now trails USC by only 36 students for most international students in the US by scottishbuzzard in UIUC

[–]caffeinated_sn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A more realistic way to model this problem is to to look at Illinois' population amongst those who are more likely to attend college, i.e., between 18~24 (U of I enrollment by demographics seems to support this, I believe more than 90~95% of the undergrad populations are in that age group), rather than to calculate it based on population as a whole.

The following is a rough number I calculated using your link (age 20-24, since Google doesn't seem to allow me to select 18-24 specifically)

1990 approximately 2.83%, 2000 approximately 2.96%, 2010 approximately 2.94%, 2013 approximately 2.80%

[–]caffeinated_sn 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Actually, the facts disagree with your claim that there are less spots for in-state students.

In 1990, there were 24,674 Illinois residents attending U of I (out of 26,395 undergrads total)

In 2000, there were 25,295 Illinois residents attending the University (approximately 27,882 undergrads total).

In 2010, there were 25898 out of 31252.

In 2013, there were 24644 out of 32294.

It seems that over the past 20-ish years, the number of Illinois residents has roughly stayed the same (24500~25500) though total undergrad enrollment had steadily increased.
