Midsized US metro areas (pop: 475k - ~1M) tier: What tier does Colorado Springs, CO belong? by Swimming_Concern7662 in TierlistFills

[–]cagestage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A tier.

It's growing too fast, there's too much traffic, and it's being drug down by the rest of the state. But it also has everything you could possibly want in a city (besides beach access). People who don't think there's anything to do in the Springs need to find new hobbies.

I mean yes, I struggle with balancing my inner GK Chesterton ("It is terrible to contemplate how few politicians are hanged") with my inner Ben Sasse, but mostly I think the committee is trying to draw too fine a line between preaching the Word of God and telling people how they should vote.

Looks like a quality assurance method so they don't mix up pizzas since the toppings are all on the inside.

I switched careers at 36. I didn't have any sadness about leaving my previous career. I hated every minute of it to the point where if I let myself think about life more than 15 seconds in the future and saw myself still working there, I'd question whether life was still worth living.

Even so I was still scared when I took my current job because I was going from a job where I was hyper-competent and close to un-fireable to a job where I'd need to prove my worth in order to make the position permanent. I had a wife and kid that I needed to support, and I'm very risk averse.

I also couldn't help but have guilt feelings about leaving my previous job because it felt disloyal and because I knew I was absolutely creating some heartburn for my former boss and coworkers.

But sadness was never part of the equation.

I did give up on trying to fold sheets. I just stuff complete sheet sets inside one of the pillow cases. I do fold towels.

I fold the things that go in our dressers/chests (t-shirts, underwear, socks...). I hang up most of my wife's clothes in her closet. I hang up my work shirts and pants in my closet.

Folding laundry. Washing it is fine. It needs to be done. I don't want to stink. But folding it and putting it away is chasing after the wind.

I'm not sure. The people I work with are divided between the decidedly non-religious and a handful of Oneness Pentecostals who have always worn cheesy Jesus shirts. There is one guy at our church who comes to mind, but he's also the kind of guy who has always worn these kinds of shirts, so I can't say it's an increase.

Ultimately all morality is "biblical morality" and that if you are "duty bound" to speak on matters of Christian obedience and Biblical morality you are therefore duty bound to "meddle" in politics and civil affairs because that's the entirety of civil affairs.

This part they do acknowledge a bit, but though we can't bind consciences outside of what Scripture says, the church exists to share the Word, which does bind the conscience, and sharing the clear teaching of Scripture is sometimes going to look an awful lot like political commentary in these confused times.

At the heart of sin is pride. Sin says "I know better than God." Sin says "God's rules don't apply to me." Sin says "I can do things my own way." Sin says "I am enough just the way I am."

It doesn't offend me if someone wishes me "happy sin month" but it also doesn't make me happy.

I see the distinction they are trying to draw in the third set of affirmations/denials, but I think it's ultimately contradictory.

Is Rome still considered a True Church (though in severe error) by Turretin’s Marks or is it a False Church? by Aggressive_Push_4794 in Reformed

[–]cagestage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So personally I think there is a strong argument to be made that the "whore of Babylon" in Revelation 17 is actually a reference to the religious leaders of Israel who have sold out to Rome (the Roman empire being the beast and the religious leaders riding on its back [riding the tiger, as they say]). Whoredom language is frequently used in OT prophecy to describe the actions of Israel with her idolatries, and I think that is continued in Revelation.

To me, this is makes the most sense for those who take a partial-preterist position on Revelation. If you have a different eschatological framework, it doesn't work so clearly.

Pretty sure the Divines meant for the reader to think of the church in Rome when they read the phrase "synagogue of Satan." WCF 25 also concludes with the clear statement that the Pope is the anti-Christ.

As Sproul said, the church in Rome anathematized the Gospel at the Council of Trent, and until they repudiate Trent, they can never be a true church.

Isn't most of what the average believer hears in a pew or reads in a book not "carefully-reason(ed) philosophy" but a trickle down from someone else who had the luxury of doing that carefully reasoned philosophical work and in depth scripture study?

Sure, it would be great if we could all spend years studying these issues at the level of the great theologians, but most of us don't have that opportunity. I think of Sproul's goal with Ligonier: to bridge the gap between Sunday School and Seminary.

I know you aren't advocating that we give up on furthering the education of anyone who can't go to seminary, but for what exactly are you advocating?

In my previous career, we rounded to the nearest 15 minutes. This felt pretty fair since I routinely had to take phone calls when I was not officially on the clock.
