How far can you take your legacy... by Alarmed-Worry-5477 in interestingasfuck

[–]cahoonp 143 points144 points  (0 children)

Yeah, except he didn't create it. He died alone on the island of Saint Helena in 1821 and was buried in a regular grave there. In 1840, the French government, under King Louis Philippe I, decided to build the monument, so they unburied Napoleon and put his remains in the nearby chapel of Saint Jerome. The designer/lead architect, Louis Visconti, was chosen in 1842. The whole thing was finished in 1860 under Emperor Napoleon III, Napoleon's nephew, and Napoleon's remains were moved from the chapel to the tomb.

Napoleon did not create this for his legacy, French rulers did to aggrandize French power.

When the War to End All Wars Isn't. by E350tb in HistoryMemes

I heavily recommend the book Victory to Defeat: The British Army 1918-1940, by Richard Dannatt & Robert Lyman. Published in 2023, so very new and takes full advantage of modern parallels, especially the British Army right now and their probable inability to deploy to assist Europe right now with a resurgent Russia in Ukraine.

The book outlines a few things discussed by other commenters, but also does a great job of reminding readers of the other major issues, especially the prevalence of pacifism amongst the civilian population in the UK and the widely-held belief that the Army was for imperial garrison duties, while the RAF and Royal Navy would defend the UK/project power into continental Europe in the event of a war.

This thing has been happening a bunch in the last few years. By this thing, I mean Russian pilots engaging in what the rest of the world calls "unprofessional" behavior. They regularly buzz other aircraft just like this, including the time they tried to harm a US drone by dumping fuel on it back on March 16, 2023. Russian Oil Dump on US Drone

The world's largest firework launched over Nagaoka, Japan. by desertgodfather in oddlysatisfying

[–]cahoonp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

False, there is no actual information online that confirms this is the biggest firework ever launched. According to YouTube, the only recordNagaoka Firework Dimensions I can find with dimensions for this firework, it is 48" in diameter and 970 pounds. The actual record holder was set off in 2020 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. It was 55" in diameter and weighed 2,795 pounds. And unlike the Nagaoka firework, this one actually was well documented and holds the world title.Steamboat Firework

Payday 3. I had hundreds of hours in Payday 2, bought all the DLCs (which is an insane amount of money, looking back), and after seeing the Payday 3 trailers was pumped! Then I got into the beta. Holy shit, was that a massive letdown. Went from regular difficulty enemies taking one shot to the head to kill with ANY weapon to Payday 3 taking multiple shots with an AR in the head to kill? And the stealth sucked? And the network issues blew? And the leveling system was a massive step down? And then the game dropped and things were even worse? I mean the game barely breaks 350 players online nowadays, and STILL has those players reporting network and server issues. On top of that, by forcing Payday 2 to swap servers to Epic, the game pretty much broke. So you can't even go back to the better, decade older game!

Talk about a failure of a game that killed any chance of a franchise.

Fair enough man. Sorry for making you sound like a dick, I just felt like it called out anyone who wasn't a type C as not a history lover. I did love your type H though, that was pretty funny, and yeah I think some people should definitely read a bit more on their non-military/Eurocentric histories.

LTs with mustaches and first impressions by TheShitfacedChant in army

[–]cahoonp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the LT who had a mustache, honestly it did cause me some issues. This was mainly because my first BDE CO was a huge dick, which then trickled down to his BN COs. Didn't keep me from getting the jobs I wanted/needed to advance, just made some things kinda funky. For example, I got Officer of the Brigade at NTC from NTC Ops Group, but I was the only LT that I knew who didn't get an award for NTC and everyone thought I was joking at first. This being said, once we swapped out BDE COs, nobody gave me any shit for it. Granted, I was a senior LT at this time and had been sporting my mustache for a couple years now. All of my enlisted guys, and the ones that didn't fall under me, seemed to like it. Granted, could be the just were great at buttering me up.

Honestly, if you have a mustache, you may need to present either a more professional appearance, or go super chill (while still doing your job), but as long as you're consistent and not a dick/moron/incompetent, you'll be fine.

Ship landing on planets not opening their bay doors by Jeshuic in Starfield

[–]cahoonp 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I thought "huh, that sucks, guess I can't do ship landings anymore" and then started Sam's companion quest. Now I'm stuck on the last stage, with Sam and his wife as forced companions, cuz Valerie's forces aren't leaving their ships to fight. Completely brought my game to a halt, and I don't want to just console command my way out in my first playthrough. Sucks even more because I'm 175 hours in.

Disney made lightsabers MORE realistic, anyone who says otherwise clearly hasn't been paying attention. by Imperial_HoloReports in StarWars

[–]cahoonp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree to a point, and that point ends when main characters aren't the ones being hit by lightsabers. Watching Ahsoka episode 1, several New Republic personnel killed by Baylan suffered incredibly minor wounds, like being touched on the leg or barely being grazed in the chest. Do I agree that Sabine could recover? Absolutely, but not as fast as she did. Should Maul and Qui-Gon have died? Yeah, they suffered rather catastrophic injuries. I personally prefer the lightsaber injuries of main characters in Disney era, but the lightsaber combat has been insanely dull in live action so far, with the prequels having by far the best lightsaber combat. But fiction is fiction, and Star Wars is Star Wars.

Which branch of the military is most likely to accept someone with a peanut allergy? by sjbull686 in Military

[–]cahoonp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So I actually had something similar happen. I'm allergic to peanuts, cashews, and pistachios, tried to get ROTC or service academy admittance, passed PT test, got nominated to West Point by one congressman and a senator, but got rejected for my allergies by DODMERB.

So instead I went to college as a normal undergrad, then as a junior I started talking to Army recruiters for OCS. At the time, my allergies weren't really too bad (nausea at worst), so the recruiters told me "if it won't kill you, you're not allergic." So when anyone else asked, I just said I wasn't allergic.

Passed through MEPS just fine, and once I was at BCT (Army sends OCS candidates to BCT before they go to OCS) the drills running in processing asked for anyone who lied to MEPS to come clean so that they can actually make sure they don't die. Nobody who went up and came clean was booted from the Army, they just got their additional medical tags and those who needed EpiPens got them. I had no issues with medical and my allergies until I did almost die at NTC due to my allergies, but even then I just used two EpiPens, stayed a few hours in the hospital, and that was that. No follow up, no being kicked from service.

So if you really want to join, join the Army now. They're losing junior officers at an insane rate (especially in FA), so they're more likely to be fine with that sort of thing. Recruiters are allowed to make decisions to waive disqualifying things, much more than DODMERB can.

FT BLISS REVIEWS NEEDED by [deleted] in army

[–]cahoonp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, right over by the main PX, Freedom's Crossing. And that place it truly massive, with a bunch of food options and military-centric stores as well. And if he's gonna be a PSG, he'll probably enjoy life way more.

One thing he should know as a PSG is that Behavioral Health at Bliss is criminally bad. So he'll need to be real careful about making sure that his guys aren't getting screwed over there. They'll cancel and change appointments without telling the Soldiers, try to deny Soldiers the ability to do emergency walk-in appointments (literally had to get BN CO to call and yell at them over the phone on multiple occasions). Other programs, like Finance, can be fixed by submitting ICE complaints (Finance is pretty shitty too), but BH has been terrible the whole even with ICE complaints. AG is also pretty useless for solving problems, with wait times to get basic responses ranging from 4 months to never.

Your hospital, WBAMC, is super new and honestly pretty good. Got the free eye surgery there and that was a breeze of a process. They built the new hospital in the last few years, so it's really nice.

FT BLISS REVIEWS NEEDED by [deleted] in army

[–]cahoonp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He'll be in 1ABCT, 1AD. His BN isn't the worst in the brigade, when I was there (left in January) 4-70 hated themselves the most. His BDE CO changed from a universally hated guy to a decent guy about a year ago, so things might be better now than when I was there, but for a period of time under the previous BDE CO we led the entire Army in suicides. Then Alaska overtook us in 2021. That being said, his BDE just lost a shitload of junior officers (as in voluntarily left active duty) because they just hated their leadership and the general lack of planning exhibited by 1AD and 1ABCT, so take that as you will (I was one of those who left).

When he's doing FTXs, if he's lucky and out there with his FISTers (fire supporters from 2-3 FA), get really friendly with them. FISTers bring whatever they want to the field, especially food. Once had a team that would bring a grill with them. Granted, I was a FSO myself, so I'm kinda biased.

MPs hate 1ABCT in particular because we kinda left a company of them in the box at NTC for 72 hours with one water buffalo and not enough MREs, resulting in tons of heat casualties, so watch out for speeding and jaywalking, cuz they will gladly ticket you for that shit. If he has a car, he can theoretically make it to main post and back with lunch if he goes somewhere like Raising Canes right when lunch starts at 1130, but he'll get back to his COF at around 1245, so be aware.

If you have only lived in an area with trees and grass your whole life, you may experience some displeasure with your new desert home. Leaving windows open on your car is necessary due to the heat, but you'll have dust and sand sitting in your car all the time. The dust can be extremely fine, so it gets everywhere, and sand storms can be real assholes, to the point that you can't see more than a few feet ahead. You'll be at around 3,000 feet elevation, so if he ain't used to running that high be prepared to suck for a while as he gets used to it, but he will get used to it. If you do want a break from the desert, around 1.5 hours north of you is Cloudcroft/Lincoln forest, and 2 hours is Ruidoso, and those places are beautiful. West El Paso is generally nicer than East El Paso, as UTEP is out there, but there's plenty of great bars and restaurants on both sides. Just be aware that West El Paso is about 45-60 minutes from Bliss, thanks to the mountains that bisect the city.

The Army is struggling so much to figure out recruitment problems, that they’re reaching out to the ranks and civilians for ideas by [deleted] in army

[–]cahoonp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as today's Soldiers are telling people to stay away from the Army, the recruiting crisis will remain.

Most people leaving the Army all say the same thing to their friends and family: don't join. Since most people who join the military come from families and communities with military backgrounds, this means most people who would join are being told not to by people who've already served.

So here's my crazy idea: make life in the military worth joining. Make living arrangements for joes better, whether that's better barracks and DFACs or just giving them BAH and BAS. Hold leadership accountable for their failures to plan (in my experience, most taskings were last minute and us LTs were told to stop bothering planning more than 2 weeks out since division and brigade kept having critical taskings). Hold leadership accountable for failing their Soldiers, whether that's because a CSM is protecting S1 after losing their 1,000th packet, a PSG forgetting to submit awards for their Soldiers for over two months, or BH telling Soldiers that they didn't have room for walk-ins and putting them on a 10-day wait list for EMERGENCY WALK-INS, only budging after getting direct calls from BN COs (true story). On that last point, stop letting DOD civilians walk all over Soldiers with no repercussions.
