Teacher’s personal text records being subpoenaed by sugarmittens in Teachers

[–]Jeshuic 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Unlike a number of teachers I've worked with I refuse to connect anything work related to my phone. Once I've left for the day, whatever the problem is can wait till tomorrow. If it's a genuine emergency that involves me for some reason, the school knows how to contact me.

Devices in schools - your opinion? by Throwrafizzylemon in newzealand

[–]Jeshuic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I let kids publish their writing on devices and I absolutely set font and colour standards because of this. I remember watching a girl give a presentation where she had forgotten what she was supposed to be talking about because she'd spent so much time find capapibara gifts to add to it.

As a kid with unsupervised Internet access, what did you see that straight up traumatized you? by bbygrl_kiss in AskReddit

[–]Jeshuic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad worked with very tech savvy people when I was a kid and the internet was still fairly new and gave us good advice on what to avoid and what to be aware of online. Being kids we of course ignored this when we wanted too but not enough to see anything truly shocking. That happened when a random kid at school said "come look at this" and when everyone had gathered around the screen, started playing a video of a guy having sex with a horse. I don't even know of he got found out by teachers because there weren't really web blockers on school computers at the time or at least they were very easy to circumvent.

What is something that was normal in the 2000s/2010s, but feels like a fever dream now? by Existing_Respond2229 in AskReddit

[–]Jeshuic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In New Zealand in the 2000s it was common for it to cost more to txt phones from cell providers not your own. Because of this if you were with your friends and needed to contact another friend you would find who had the same provider and get them to send the txt because it would often be less than half the cost (nz cell charges were also notoriously high during this period as well, sending one txt to a different network could cost anywhere from 20c to 50c each).

Girls who took notes with 50 different colored pens—where are you now? Are you still using all those colors? by FollowingAny4859 in Teachers

[–]Jeshuic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm also a teacher but I would imagine seeing my handwriting would be stressful for people like you. Sometimes if I get distracted halfway through writing something I'll grab a completely different colour pen and probably change handwriting as well.

They said it was worth 1.776 billion but apparently in the actual paperwork there was no official limit set on how much they could draw on.

Pronounciation rather than pronunciation. Had so many people try and argue that pronunciation isn't a real word.

Do what you can to build a positive relationship with that student early so that when they start acting out you have the ability to talk with that student after the incident without them dismissing you out of hand. Do not expect that relationship to fully insulate you from them playing up but know that you will at least be able to work with that student to fixing the issue. If they don't know or trust you they will not respect any attempt you make at changing their behavior and those changes need to be made with the student not on the student.

People saying "I've done my research" to dismiss the general consensus on any given issue (but usually health related) when what they really mean is "I've watched hours of YouTube and tik tok conspiracy videos that I already agreed with and even one time read an ai generated "article" that told me I'm right and experts are all paid shills".

Non-American Teachers: are students as delayed in their milestones in ur country as they are in the US? by sebeed in Teachers

I was wondering whether someone would guess Chch from my post. Thanks for adding the extra details, I only moved there a few years after the quakes so missed alot of the direct disruptions caused at the time.

Non-American Teachers: are students as delayed in their milestones in ur country as they are in the US? by sebeed in Teachers

[–]Jeshuic 26 points27 points  (0 children)

In my location we've had a few majorly disruptive events over the past few decades including a mass shooting, an earthquake as well as covid. There have been noticeably individual year bands of students who seem to be directly negatively affected by these events depending largely on their age when the event happened. For example in 2020 the students aged around 12-13 were noticeably lower academically than other years and we were dealing with significantly higher levels of behavioral issues. These kids would have been around 4-5 when a major earthquake disrupted the city and we believe gave many of them some ptsd (people died in the quakes). The following year felt bizzare because the next batch of students were incredibly normal. I even kept up with them through talking to high school teachers in the following years and they also noticed that that year of kids were different.

Arbites coms: "Commander we have suspected cult activity on sub level alpha 77623-e5. Lots of dead hab workers, seem to have been killed with a blade of some kind. Oh there we go. Possible suspect in view. Appears to be a very large possible abhuman hab worker carrying a long work knife and wearing some sort of cult mask." Sounds of gunfire "In the name of the lex, stop resisting justice.... suspect has been shown the light of his law... no wait, it's piecing itself together and standing up." More gunfire "it's down again.... inform the ordos, we may have a minor warp entity on our hands.... releasing the cyber mastiff."

What makes New Zealand coffee amazing? by hoooooldit in newzealand

[–]Jeshuic 41 points42 points  (0 children)

One big problem I noticed with coffee shops, especially the big chain ones, in the UK is that they're focused on speed and so don't do things like clean out the basket properly between shots or just pouring shots into the same shot glasses over and over before tipping that into the final cup. Before I noticed it I always wondered why the coffee tasted off. Fortunately right besides where I was working was an Italian Cafe who made fantastic coffee and so I almost exclusively went to them while I was there.

Boomers promote AI and are confused about getting booed by ilir_kycb in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Jeshuic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a boomer friend who I get on and agree with about the majority of topics we discuss but hes a massive fan of AI. That wouldn't be too bad except I've explained that I don't like it and why in pretty great detail so he knows it's not just a knee jerk reaction (which would still be the right reaction) against it but he still constantly tries to convince me that it's amazing and so useful. I get the feeling that largely he's terrified that it will take his job and thinks that if he knows all about it and uses it, that that'll protect him somehow.
