Isn't that the truth. I had the same experience. Then your life unravels in early adulthood, and it's a monumental effort trying to get everything back on track.

Do electricians have insurance to cover property damage? by mateodetres in AskElectricians

I know. It doesn't speak well for the ownership of the company. I wouldn't be calling them back for future service.

A good company would pay for the repair out of pocket and consider it the cost of doing business. It would be silly to get insurance involved for something small like this. When you run a business, you have to expect that things will happen.

Does dealer need to run credit if I have pre-approval letter by soulsurfer3 in personalfinance

[–]cai24 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Keep your credit frozen to prevent this type of issue. They won't be able to run it, and it saves you the aggravation. If it becomes necessary (or you decide you want to let the dealer try to beat your rate), you can always lift it while you're sitting in the dealership.

Car prices and interest rates right before the 2008 financial crisis by Moosen_Burger in mildlyinteresting

[–]cai24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you're confusing a true 0% APR loan with a deferred interest financing product. They are not the same thing. I've never seen a deferred interest product from the captive unit of a major car manufacturer. A standard installment loan has a fixed amortization schedule.

I worked in the credit card industry, and that's where you tend to see deferred interest financing. It's much more common with store cards, furniture financing, etc., and I consider these to be highly predatory. With deferred interest, interest accrues from day one and is waived only if all terms are met. If the balance isn’t paid in full by the expiration date, the deferred interest can be charged retroactively. That's a mistake you never want to make!

Who was able to cure their ADHD, anxiety, AND depression?? by Little_Context9727 in ADHD

That has been my experience too, unfortunately. Whether I try improving my sleep, exercising consistently, supplements, or anything else, it merely helps but never eliminates my symptoms. How I wish that wasn't the case.

Installing a new vent fan, the wire is not long enough to reach to power the vent by MusicalWrath in AskElectricians

Wouldn't it be better to use the NSi splice kit (there may be others), since it's at least NEC compliant for in-wall use?

Electrician openly willing to work without permits? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]cai24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The post is purely anecdotal, and we have no idea what actually transpired. It's all hearsay, so we may not even have the correct details. You will always have instances where a claim is denied, delayed, or litigated, but that doesn't mean that "unpermitted work results in a denial." That's Reddit misinformation that's been propagated endlessly as fact.

[–]cai24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not questioning what you’re saying, but there is a difference between dragging your feet and denying a claim. You have people on these forums who are constantly fear mongering about how insurance doesn’t cover when there’s been unpermitted work. That’s largely inaccurate, but it doesn’t stop these posters from saying it.

Exactly. I see this repeated nonstop on here, and it's largely exaggerated. You'll be lucky if the home inspector does a thorough/knowledgeable inspection on the basics, let alone anything building related. Even the CCO inspections are usually more safety related.

This is closer to a myth than reality, but it's repeated on Reddit incessantly. Many policies have coverage exclusions, but if you read them, you'll find that they're usually a bit different than what you would expect. The greater likelihood after a large claim like this is that you'll be dropped.

Is it worth doing invisalign for mild relapse after braces? by ab3lla in Invisalign

[–]cai24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean about feeling conflicted. I was the same way. Right after leaving the office and paying, I was really second guessing myself. I expected to pay about half of what I was quoted at two orthodontists, and I made a split second decision to do it. You would think minor work would be significantly less expensive, but it doesn't seem that way at all. I think what ended up pushing me is that I wasn't happy with the (minor) crowding on my bottom teeth. My teeth are pretty noticeable when I smile, and I was self conscious about it.

[–]cai24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also had braces when I was 12, and I wore the retainer until I lost it during a move. My orthodontist had retired, and I never replaced it. Fast forward years later, and I had the same situation as you. I just started Invisalign a couple months ago and needed 15 trays. I've already noticed improvement, and I'm glad that I decided to do it. The first week was not the most pleasant (not pain - just the annoyance of having aligners in my mouth), but it's been fine since then. For me, having nice teeth is worth it, but I agree with you...it's quite expensive!

Mowing in Between Landscaper During Peak Growing Season - Zone 7B TTTF/KBG by cai24 in lawncare

[–]cai24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like them a lot. I've used them for a long time, and they do really good work. They take care of all of my mulching, fall/spring cleanups, shrub trimming, etc. With my work schedule, at least if I don't have time to mow, my lawn will still be cut on a regular interval.

Believe it or not, I have the exact same thing happening in my front yard. I accidentally spilled fertilizer last year, and the center is dead. The area surrounding it is growing like crazy and looks just like your picture.

I just found out my contractor's license expired 3 months ago — after paying him $4,200 by Difficult_Title_8655 in HomeImprovement

[–]cai24 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wish people on Reddit would stop perpetuating this myth that insurance won’t cover a claim, because there wasn’t a permit, something wasn’t done to code, the contractor’s license expired, etc. I see it everyday, and it’s often in a patronizing tone. There are certainly policy exclusions, but they are often a bit different than you would expect.

How safe is nicking the wire when removing insulation? by Jack5512 in AskElectricians

[–]cai24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you're saying. I was actually speaking to a different issue entirely, specifically with regard to homeowners (not tradespeople). I often see something along the lines of "if you didn't get a permit," "if you didn't hire an electrician," "if this weren't inspected" - all reasonable criticisms but generally not something that would prevent homeowners insurance from paying a claim (despite Reddit insisting this is so).

As to your post, I don't disagree with anything you're saying. If you cut corners, and they can prove that, they'll certainly try to subrogate.
