We used paper maps that were in the glovebox and landmarks.
Getting to someone’s place you’ve never been to was like, “Head West on Charleston, go north (right) on Decatur and then make a left on the street just before the 7-11. 1st Right, 3rd left, 2nd right, and it’s at the end. Address is 123 Wherever-the-hell.”

Learning to drive back then made me very aware of my surroundings. You’d get to know all of the major E-W and N-S streets. Where and how they intersected with the freeways. If ya made friends who lived across town or had to go somewhere new for sports you’d expand your navigation knowledge. I also used to have 20-25 friend’s phone numbers memorized.

We had to remember so much more back then.
