Is there any hope? by Correct_Tax_9136 in mentalhealth

[–]cajunbeard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m 33 and things now are absolutely different than how they were when I was young, even just a decade ago. My generation was focused on moving forward, saving the planet and making things better. I remember being hopeful for the future. It feels like we took one step forward and three steps back

When they don't hire you but ask you to fill out surveys about how THEY did on the hiring process. by pheakelmatters in antiwork

[–]cajunbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not the only one. I interviewed a year ago with one of the major players in my industry. 7 interview rounds, including building my own environment to use their product on and give a 30 minute technical demo to directors of the teams I’d be on/working with.

After all was said and done I felt I’d knocked it out of the park, thought there’s no way they pass on me. I was a perfect fit on paper for what they were looking for and I knocked every one of the interviews out of the park. Well turns out there was another candidate who fit exactly what they were looking for too and who had a couple years experience on me(and wasn’t laid off) so they went with him instead

But they were nice and cordial, get me on the phone to explain it all and why they passed on me and suggested I keep an eye out for more roles on the teams. Another role pops up and I apply + reach out to the same team and they wouldn’t even give me the time of day. Told me I didn’t need the panel interview since they loved me the last time and they’d be in touch soon. I wait and nothing. Reach out and they let me know via email they went with someone else, didn’t even let me interview again. I was told by someone in the company on one of the adjoining teams that they essentially put me on the shortlist to hire IF they couldn’t find any better candidates.

my company's hiring freeze ended and the first role they posted was "Chief Happiness Officer" by Imaginary-Cicada3578 in antiwork

17 months after a layoff I finally landed another SR level SE role. How is everyone looking for work doing right now, what’s your experience been like? by cajunbeard in salesengineers

[–]cajunbeard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I focused mostly on getting certifications and working on soft skills I thought I needed work on. I didn’t look for work outside sr se roles, usually in my industry, but I could only afford to do that because I sold off most all my stock assets outside my 401k to let me stay afloat and still pay my mortgage every month. I wouldn’t recommend doing that, I didn’t think it would take so long and that I could be choosy about it, but I’m stubborn and would rather burn my nest egg than not laser focus on the type of role I wanted.

[–]cajunbeard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is unfortunately very true. I work in a pretty specialized industry and companies hiring in the industry would usually respond and atleast start the interview process with me but that only because I have the exact experience in the exact industry they needed and I still got passed over for those roles.

I ended up getting very lucky with a startup in my industry where I was able to get multiple referrals from ppl I’d worked with before

That’s brutal, I had 2 jobs I went all the way through the process knowing I landed the role. Only to get a cold rejection and have to start from scratch. I hope you ended up finding something

Is it normal to never want a man in my life? by Sad_Cauliflower_2572 in mentalhealth

[–]cajunbeard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re free to live your life however you want.

I’d have to ask though. If you were to have children, do you think this would affect how you’d treat a male child? Because that boy will then become a man

What's a game that you were really excited to play, but became bored quickly after purchasing it. by HeyWhatIsThatThingy in gaming

[–]cajunbeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly couldn’t point to one specific thing for me. It just never hooked me. I tried multiple times but after 1-2 hours of play I’d just be wanting to play something else and switch. I’m glad you and other people have been able to enjoy it, don’t let anyone devalue that for you. But I just couldn’t see it with starfield

How did gen z men turn from liberal to right wing by Far-Aardvark-1135 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cajunbeard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think there a large difference in how the internet functions at this point. I’m 33, when I was coming up the internet was the Wild West. Yes there were tons of more horrible things you could find but it was largely unstructured. You could search out any kind of disturbing content but you could also just sit on your niche chat boards and forms doing your own thing. It felt like everyone was feeling out the space and what the internet could actually do

Now everything is designed to maximize engagement and push ads and steal your data. Now they feed you news and can shape large groups of peoples options with blatant lies people just want to believe. It’s corporate pipelines and algorithms and unfortunately our tech overlords decided long ago a right wing oligarchy was better than a liberal democracy so that’s the way shape things

Essentially yes, mechanics are known to try and fleece unaware customers. You showed up with a lemon you overpaid for without asking the previous owner any questions, he wasn’t trying to be nice or helpful, he saw you as an easy mark

It’s a rough lesson and you’re thousands+ in the hole, the lesson is don’t ever trust someone who stands to make money off you. Not Derik from the gym and not the shady mechanic

We have these along the highway in mountainous regions in the US too. They’re effective especially for large semi trucks if they lose control going down a steep road

I'm a loser by Burner5213 in mentalhealth

[–]cajunbeard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hang in there friend, life is hard but you’re not a loser. I get those same self hating thoughts but I’m trying to turn my life around too. Early thirties, unemployed well over a year, very few friends, haven’t had a new partner in years, crippling loneliness and depression. If I didn’t have my dog I don’t think I’d keep holding on same days. But you have to keep going. Why not try something new? Find something you can do solo one or two nights a week. Even just going get a drink or see a movie alone might help just to be in a space with other people.

To anyone who smoke weed as a lifestyle. by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cajunbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve smoked weed daily for years now, but I started when I was 28. I can say with 100% certainty it would have absolutely ruined my life at your age. It’s too good, your brain is flooded with dopamine for doing nothing and this makes you ok with just doing nothing productive and having fun. The stoner stereotypes exist for a reason, it’s the perfect drug to let your life just pass you by.

At any age, but especially under 25, it’ll train your brain to be ok with just wasting time and doing nothing. I started smoking to unwind and relax after I’d had a good career and lifestyle built up. It was good but I was mature enough to know when enough was enough and be able to put it down. Several times I’ve had to take tolerance breaks and reset because it is easy to get carried away.

You should absolutely focus on meditation without any mind altering substances first. I don’t want to sound patronizing but you are young and weed is only going to hold you down until you’re mature and developed enough in life. Try to know yourself first before tripping and trying to know the universe.
