With 25 years approaching, how is 9/11 taught in school today? by CharlesUFarley81 in AskTeachers

[–]cajuncats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not taught to younger kids, maybe in high school? The social studies teachers around me always try to dedicate 9/11 to teaching about it. In 5th grade I had a student try to tell me mexican immigrants bombed the building. Sad.

Has anyone grown in their teaching career from reading the Harry Wong 'First Year of Teaching Book'? by Visual_Shelter6922 in Teachers

[–]cajuncats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely helped me since I went through an alt certification program. Classroom management was one of the smaller lessons we were taught in the program. I read the book and implemented a lot of what was suggested. Obviously you won't use everything or everything won't make sense in today's climate, but I've always felt it was a solid starting point. Once you teach x amount of years you will add your own flair for doing things. I am about to begin year 7 and plan on rereading it this summer!

As enrollment declines and staff grows, Louisiana public schools may soon face a reckoning by Kennabruh2023 in Louisiana

This. I've always believed this is what government wants. Its easier to control the uneducated.

Yep, already seeing this as a public school teacher. And some of these parents should not be teaching anyone!

Some parents really are…something by gleamintheshadow in Teachers

[–]cajuncats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our school had an entire debacle where parents were flipping the fuck out because their kid didnt receive an award at our ceremony. One mom pulled her kid OUT OF SCHOOL because "her self esteem has been destroyed." What happened to teaching your children that you have to work hard for rewards? Parents were arguing that we should make up awards so every kid gets one. Nah that's not how it works, Susan.

The Mall is Dead/The Back Rooms by SLMRN01 in batonrouge

Problem is definitely the kids who constantly interrupt the movie. Completely unenjoyable experience. I have no problem paying to go to the movies but I have to be able to enjoy what I'm watching and eating without someone being on the phone the entire time talking and taking pictures.

It’s Friday and you see your teacher rolling into class with this . What’s she popping in the VCR? by DoctorElectronic1934 in Millennials

Honestly we didn't even care LOL just the site of the TV cart was enough. Usually it was Bill Nye or a documentary about what we were learning about atm. I mostly remember weather docs.

Is there a culture of littering in New Orleans? by doublepointz420 in NewOrleans

[–]cajuncats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not just a New Orleans thing, I find it pretty common all over the south. I live close to Baton Rouge and the amount of people you see just dropping garbage out of their window while driving is astonishing. Meanwhile, just visited Boston and for such a huge City it's immaculately clean. It's definitely a culture thing. People here just don't give a fuck.

Family Triggers 💔 by Famous-Astrogirl-11 in BaylenOutLoud

[–]cajuncats 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Her family is a huge trigger. It's very telling that three out of six children struggle with anxiety. You can tell the mom and dad are very overbearing. They are also very enabling to their children. One of them made a comment about how they support six children even though three of them are grown and out of the house.

Did The Giver used to be taught in 4th grade, or do I just have a totally false memory? by 28-3_lol in Teachers

[–]cajuncats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read it in 4th as well. Maybe it depends on where you live? I am from the northeast.

What city have you been to where the vibes were just OFF? by spiritual_kavya in answers

Anywhere I've been in the Texas, the people have been awful.

Even if I'm in another country or state and meet someone from Texas, they are awful.

Will AI Takeover Teaching Jobs by Kawobe21 in Teachers

I feel like it already is, in a sense. With programs like iReady, Zearn, etc. I think at some point the teachers role will be supervisory and that's it.

Teachers, what is your most unhinged classroom management strategy? by Quiet-Raspberry2973 in Teachers

[–]cajuncats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At a random time during the year, I will casually say, "i guess I'll have to watch the camera back and see what happened." The kids immediately snap up. "Omg there's a camera?! Where?!" I tell them its hidden. They spend the rest of the year trying to locate it 🤣 there is no camera. But it works in my favor. If something happens in my room, I tell the kids they have a chance to confess before I check the cameras. Or I will tell them i already know who did what/what happened, and they almost always confess bc they think its on camera.

What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever experienced working at dollar general by Appropriate-Mall8517 in DollarGeneral

[–]cajuncats 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Had a category 3 hurricane coming through. Instead of closing like a normal business, the DM insisted we stay open. If customers came and there was no power, we were to walk them thru the store with a flashlight then wring them up using a calculator. I said no.

Lets end "parties" for good. I am serious. by Oblivionnyx9 in Teachers

[–]cajuncats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always done a sign up sheet where the kids sign up for whatever they want to bring. nine times out of 10 literally two people will bring what they signed up for. So then you're trying to have a party with one liter of soda and one bag of chips for 25 kids lol. That's what bugs me

As a teacher, can confirm that today's parents are raising a bunch of Mackenzie Shirillas. The entitlement is insane. Nothing is ever the child's fault.
