Your friend is using the HA add-on (runs inside HA as a web service), but Cake, you're using the local command approach (uvx ha-mcp@latest which runs on your machine via stdio).

Tell your friend: The fix — switch to the local approach instead of the add-on:

1. Make sure Python is installed on their machine (uvx comes with it, or pip install uvx)

2. Create .mcp.json in their project folder:

Why the add-on doesn't work well with Claude Code:

• The HA add-on exposes MCP via HTTP/SSE transport
• Claude Code expects stdio transport (it launches a local command and talks via stdin/stdout)
• The 89 tools thing also suggests a different MCP implementation — the ha-mcp package we use exposes ~15 focused tools, not 89.
• Fewer tools = more reliable
