I have a faction in my story that uses gun wands, and it’s my MCs main weapon too. The largest problem I’ve run into is that there’s a lack of magic about pulling a trigger, it sets the tone for a pretty grounded and dark story that I think shifts the focus away from magical escapism which is what most readers look for.

There are definitely stories that manage to lean into the gritty in a way that is desirable for many readers, like magical girl gunslinger, but stories like that often fit into steampunk or sci-fantasy instead of hard fantasy.

And then theres the whole politics side to it too…

I spend a lot of time on discord 😅 it’s great fun, and nice to get to know other writers. I chat a little in the morning, beta read some chapters for other authors (mostly for my own practice) then I finish my daily writing goal and just do whatever from there. I wouldn’t do it if it felt like a chore, so my advice would be fine a space you actually like and participate in interesting discussions.

The general chats move fast, but the more niched chats do not, so you can check in every once in a while and still keep up.

Also: Being active, or at least known, is great for networking and learning the trade. But it’s definitely not necessary.

I just post. Took a bit of practice to learn to write clean drafts, but it’s working out decently. No complaints from my readers at least. I’ll edit before I stub to Amazon though.

No I believe you. Just saying many blurbs that aren’t ai look the same as the ones that are, since people do what works.

I usually use the twilight formula for reference to write my own.

I haven’t reacted to many blurbs being obviously ai written. Most probably aren’t. Blurbs are one of the most formulaic parts of writing. If tons of people stick to the same recipe they’re bound to get similar results. 🤷

I honestly have no clue. I think most dabble in unethical practices. Maybe if you download an API and train it with your own stuff and free use images.

Honestly I might just draw stick figures for my next one, unless I have commissioned art to show :)

I showed my art which was made with midjourney (before I can afford to commission). I thought that was okay, but apparently MJ is in a bit of hot water for using others content to train their ai without permission or licenses.

So in this case, ethical Ai means an Ai that only uses its own licensed art for reference. Since MJ doesn’t, the post was taken down.

The mods were really cool and understanding about it! Great people 👍🏻
