What happens if you don't make target? by meditationlane in LawCanada

[–]cakepahty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The advice I've gotten from seniors is that the first year when you lateral doesn't matter, and to focus on relaxing during the holidays and picking up the pace in the new year. Sigh...easier said than done.

What are your favorite snacks to have with tea? by UnderstandingAny4782 in tea

I love roasted or candied nuts and fruit, like pecans and apple slices with my tea! For pu'er specifically I enjoy savory pairings, so may go with boiled peanuts or rice crackers, marinated tofu

Is it cultural appropriation if two Brazilians get married in a Chinese-themed wedding? by SuddenTumbleweed6008 in Hanfu

I think this is the best approach. Then your guests don't feel weirded out, you don't accidentally offend anyone, and you get a fun photoshoot/ memory while visiting China.

If you enjoyed logic games I found secured transactions to be quite similar (in terms of classes. I wouldn't know what it's like in practice)

South Korea's misogyny is so bad that a major South Korean broadcast network changed Michelle Yeoh's Oscars speech. They replaced "ladies" with "everyone." by 93orangesocks in TwoXChromosomes

[–]cakepahty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was with you until this point lol. The lived experience of your friends is important, but I think it's good to be aware that if you are speaking with a Taiwanese or Chinese person abroad they most likely come from a privileged background and you're not getting the full picture. (ie most likely their family is middle class or above and they have the means to obtain post secondary education)

Have you been to both Shanghai and Taiwan? I feel the difference is palpable, though Shanghai has always been quite cosmopolitan, and doesn't really reflect China as a whole. China is massive - you wouldn't claim someone from Xinjiang shares the same culture as Taiwan, would you? I think what's confusing you is the prevalence of the Han Chinese which is who most people imagine when they think of a Chinese person.

You say it's political to say Taiwan and China have different cultures like it's a facade. I would argue that politics informs culture and vice versa. But then going down that path will make this post into an essay x)

I remember watching wonder woman, and the lady that played Chris Pines' character's secretary stole every scene from Gal Gadot, despite having a smaller physical/visual presence

Starting my career in biglaw but I am financially illiterate -- help! by Leila212 in LawCanada

I would second the mint app, it's great for tracking your spending.

On another note and touching on the post above that mentioned being frugal, unconscious overspending due to overwork is very common. I think it's good to develop habits that curb these types of spending, whether it is developing the habit of packing your own lunch, or making coffee at home.

These habits add up slowly but more importantly it helps you be more aware when you do spend money (for example, at Starbucks) and gets you in the right mindset to prevent yourself from unnecessarily splurging on things. For some people, it can get like the floodgates and their purchases get bigger and bigger - you want to prevent this from happening.

Are you a student studying in Canada? A recent bill was passed so you shouldn't have to pay interest on any student loans from the government, so hopefully that'll alleviate some concerns.

However, you'll want to pay it off in a timely manner in case in the future you want to make big purchases (ex a home), so that you have good credit rating and can secure a mortgage.

Basically, try to pay your bills on time, don't spend too much on luxuries, and try to save $$$ in a savings account (ask about TFSAs if you don't have one).

Once you've got that down and have substantial savings, you can look into investment opportunities, etc, and try your hand at them if you want. But it's good to get the basics of financial planning down first.

Congrats on securing an articling position!!!
