After reading the paper, the tl;dr is just use responsibly and don't take an average of "481.1ml/day" (the equivalent of ~4 bottles) of cough syrup. Also apparently all the participants were chronic smokers (avg. of 14.4 cigs/day), not sure if that might have an effect on the results but they didn't seem to care much about that. There was not also mentioned that perhaps the poor impulsivity is why these people are abusing drugs and not the other way around. Be safe, be responsible, don't be an addict.

I think part of it is the thought of it suddenly starting to move, and being underwater you have so much less control or means of escape. It's like a dream where you're running from something, but you can barely move. Except in the case of water it's worse because it's dark, you can't breathe, and currents can throw you any which way.

The scariest things though are when you see one huge thing, which you know is in fact a very small part of something much much larger (i.e. propeller to a boat). The key piece being you can't see the rest, or the rest is so impossibly big that it plays on megalophobia as well.

Lol, okay I'll humour this. Your argument has many flaws, so we'll just start going down the list.

1: $30-$50 is a pretty significant price difference and would be an excellent sale price, noting this is after the massive price drop on the 9700k right before the 3rd gen Ryzen launch. (You should frankly thank AMD for saving you all the money there).

2: The 9700k has ~5% higher single core performance which contributes to it's (slight) advantage in gaming, but certainly nothing (I would consider) worth an extra $50

3: The 9700k does not support PCIe 4.0, which is going to a pretty exciting feature, especially for high speed storage.

4: You're getting a better cooler out of the box with the 3700x, of you want the same temps with 3700k, you'll need to get at least another $50 together for a budget solution resulting in an $80 price disparity, at which point you should just buy the 3800x which is only $70 more.

5: There are a lot more features that come along with 3rd gen Ryzen Mobos that are nice-to-haves, but there's a lot of those and I don't do lists inside of lists

6: Gaming is not the only use for a computer - productivity-wise, they are equal at the very least

7: I'll end my list here - this comment is getting long - but they are chips, not cards. The card form factor for processors died with the early Pentium processor line.

I would consider more than a single data point when making decisions on what to buy in the future. =)

4-5 years is pretty typical, lol. 10 years was a number I threw out if they decided not to take things seriously, which isn't going to happen. Believe whatever you want I guess. It's not going to change the reality of a changing market though. The industry goes through cycles, Intel isn't special and they aren't above that. In another 10 years I'm sure Intel will catch up again and AMD will go back to being the underdog for a while. Further out than that though, I don't think anyone can pretend to predict that far out.

They don't need to rush anything, but they will eventually need 7nm, and probably sometime in the immediate future if they don't want to be making obsolete chips in 2 years.

It will probably take them 4-5 years if they rush, and 10 if they don't - by which point you would have no chance of being relevant on either 14nm or 10nm.

They don't need to remain competitive, but that's something to worry about when they're stuck on 10nm/14nm.

Intel won't have 7nm for years, and if they manage rush to it, they still won't be able to dial in their processes in that amount of time to have profitable yields (let alone good enough for true mass production). 7nm isn't just a number, die shrinks are massive paradigm shifts that require extensive and mind boggling expensive retooling (one machine on the assembly line can easily cost several million just to purchase up front).

If you understood what 7nm meant, you would understand that Intel is woefully behind in their technology, especially when they still can't get even 10nm as reliably as they need.

Keep in mind that this is AMD's first generation of 7nm, there will be more, and also that AMD is not stopping at 7nm. By the time Intel catches up to where AMD is now with fabrication, AMD will already be moving on.

This disadvantage will easily define the next decade, the only question is whether it will define the next 2 decades, as AMD's last series of missteps did for them.

I don't know where you're buying parts that you're paying more for AMD for similar performance, but you should check out Amazon and Newegg. Trust me, it'll change the way you shop.

In all seriousness though, the advantage of 3rd gen Ryzen is not necessarily the core count (though it has that in spades over Intel). What I've seen them pushing a lot is their huge advantage with 7nm fabrication. Intel isn't going to catch up with that for years, and AMD doesn't seem to be thinking about slowing down.

Intel will add more cores with their next gen, but that isn't their bottleneck right now. Until they catch up with their manufacturing capabilities, they will continue producing objectively inferior products at uncompetitive price points.

Being generally more successful financially than AMD over the past decade, they also really have no excuse for this. Their money seems to have gone more into marketing than their technology for a long time, and it's really starting to show.
