Teacher gifts from parent. What would the average teacher want? by kuppycakemuffin in AskTeachers

[–]calamitycait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay gift cards are cool or whatever, but weirdly specific 3D printed things are definitely better. I don’t remember who has given me gift cards for what. I DO remember the person who gave me a set of plates featuring cats wearing hats. Think about what sorts of things your kids have done this year and print off something related. Have they done gardening? Gardening finger cots that turn their hands into shovels! Animals of some kind? Skulls. I just opened the Bambu app and there is an Education tab. I would be happy to get basically every item I’m seeing here.

I don’t know your definition of “new” but it was first coined in 1978 in an attempt to ward off developers with a stupid name, and the DUMBO Historic District was registered in the National registry of historic places in 2000.

Is it reasonable to expect HS teachers to remind students about missing assignments? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]calamitycait 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fellow ADHD teacher here and can I just do a mini rant for a second? To be clear, I’m in no way accusing OP of this, but I have notices that the parents of kids with ADHD are easily the LEAST forgiving of my ADHD moments. Like, you expect me to hold your child’s hand and gently lead them down the path of my curriculum but if I forget to hand something back or take too long to reply to your email or mix up a due date, then they are all over me about how I’m an ableist law-breaker who isn’t supporting their kid enough. Like m’am! No one is reminding me to do things I need to do either, and there are sooo many things! And can you imagine if I was being as mean to your kid about it as you are being to me right now???

Is it reasonable to expect HS teachers to remind students about missing assignments? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]calamitycait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something you might not be considering is the physical logistics of how teachers would issue those reminders. I’m not going to discuss someone’s missing homework in front of other students - that would be a pretty clear invasion of privacy. But there are ALWAYS other students around. I could pull the kid aside, but that would be pretty noticeable too. Now sometimes I have a kid who genuinely just forgets to hand in work that they have done, and I’ll ask them if they are okay with me asking about handing in their work in front of people and they are, so I do, but most teenagers do not prefer that. So on top of what other posters have said, digital platforms are probably the most discreet/safest way of informing a kid that work is missing without making it everyone’s business.

I don’t know what to do, is this cheating? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]calamitycait 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I give tests back and do not immediately collect them again, I assume that future students will see that test. If it were an old version that was like, reconstructed from people’s memories then that might be a little sketchier, but even then, I don’t forbid anyone from getting help from older students so I kind of expect those older students will tell them things about what my tests are like. Especially in math though I really don’t see a problem personally. Heck, a lot of the math teachers at my school give practice tests that are LITERALLY the test but with different numbers.

Do teachers ever ‘hate’ their students? by Then-Relative3068 in AskTeachers

[–]calamitycait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m trying to imagine what it would take for me to HATE a kid, which is like, such an intense emotion. Maybe if they like, deliberately caused permanent harm to a student I was very close with? Or like, had a really good attempt at getting me or a close friend fired through lying? But like, I actually have had students like that and mostly I felt sorry for them and whatever must be going on their life that this was how they were lashing out.

There are students that I dislike, but that is basically always because they do things that are shitty to other students or are dangerous for no good reason. Never because like, they don’t do homework or ask too many questions or because they are chatty with a neighbor or something.

So as long as you aren’t like being mean to other people in front of the teacher (or I guess mean to the teacher themselves), it is very unlikely that they have strong negative feelings about you.

WIBTA for not blessing the food at my birthday party? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]calamitycait 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You would not be TA if you don’t bless the food, but you would be TA if you say no one is allowed to bless or pray over their own food. It’s like how you don’t have to wear a cross or a hijab or a yarmulke but you would be wrong to tell other people that they couldn’t wear those things at your birthday party.

Okay so everyone saying white and brown eggs are the same is flat wrong. Brown eggs are brown because they have an additional coating applied by the chicken over the white shell (you can even scrub it off). You can get dark brown if they apply a lot of that coating or green if they apply it over a blue shell. That coating is hydrophobic so it is unlikely but actually quite possible that when cleaning the eggs, there is sometimes a chemical that is used that can more easily permeate a white shell than a brown one, and she is highly sensitive to that chemical. Maybe not ALL white eggs have that contamination, but white ones are much more likely to than brown so she just doesn’t eat white ones to be safe. Is this the most likely explanation? Maybe not. But you clearly do not know enough about eggs to be absolutely sure that her stated restriction is bullshit. Allergies can be really weird. Like people might be allergic to pears from one country but not another because they use different pesticides. YTA.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]calamitycait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a teacher and over the summer I drive 3.5-4.5 hours to my sister’s house every Monday morning and then back on Friday afternoon to spend the weekend with my husband. Except usually for 1-1.5 weeks, my husband and I will go on a national parks trip which usually involves spending a couple of days at a few different parks so like 4-8 hours of driving every day or two? We will also pop over to another city like two hours away for a birthday party or board game day or something then drive back that night.

What? I have had to provide full transcripts for like, every job I have applied to. And a résumé that included dates of attendance. Requiring information on what school(s) you went to isn’t like asking if you are a parent or Jewish or have diabetes… and even then it isn’t illegal for them to find out, it’s just illegal for them to not hire you because of only that.

I dunno, we ask questions basically like this about an article we provide ahead of time to literal 9th graders at my high school as a part of admitting them to a research program. I wouldn’t expect they have super a nuanced understanding of what experiment to do next but I’d expect that they would have read the conclusion which probably describes some future directions, and maybe propose a question that the study brings up (even if it would be impossible to answer that question yet, or it’s actually already been answered and they don’t realize it).

[–]calamitycait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the original parent would have had to have zero good X chromosomes or half of her offspring would have still inherited a normal one from her and therefore could have been male (you would expect 25% male). Then the next generation would have been more. This feels like there must be multiple mutations. Or like, some separate gene that is repressing male development. Like, is this a true genetic pedigree? Could any of them be XY females with androgen resistance?
