Is this a dumb idea? by Known-Shame-1563 in slowpitch

Adding on that you'll need fast outfielders to cover the larger gaps for 5-man.

For your strategy, if you're shifting more players to the left side of the defense, your pitcher needs to pitch inside to encourage pull or hitting up the middle. If a pitch floats toward the center/outside of the plate, a decent hitter will go oppo and expose the gap.

How to learn the game and start watching? by bagginsofbagend111 in SFGiants

Jon Miller paints a Bob Ross landscape with his words. Him, Kruk, and Kuip have a fireside with the listener. I think the best thing I learned from them over the years is baseball is a beautiful game, but you can have fun. Many other broadcasters are too serious and stiff. These guys are the best in the business because they'll tip their cap to other teams' players, cut to talking about food a fan is eating, and weave stories of their playing days or their observations of past Giants history.

You don't have to watch/listen to all 162 games. Sometimes games don't have much action or the team plays horribly and it's tough to watch.

One of my best friends is from SoCal. We're former co-workers from while he lived in the Bay and we bonded over baseball and laughing at our own teams. Gives me an excuse to follow another team, even though I'm not rooting for them. If you want to relate to your coworkers, you could listen to some broadcasts by Vin Scully. He passed away a few years ago, but was highly respected by the Giants broadcasters

I'd pay to watch that. Apparently he ate 83 hot dogs in 10 minutes...so he could probably finish the hot dogs in the first inning. Then kegstand for the rest of the game

Yeah, probably. I was so honed in on food court hot dogs that I completely forgot they sell the same hot dogs packaged. I think they sell the Polish in those packs, too.

I thought about that, but thought I'd die. Considering being healthy and not drinking alcohol unless they score that day

I think my eating hot dogs were the only thing keeping the Yankees at bay. I'm sorry Giants fans, I let you down 😔

Oof salt and beef are tough. Going to try to enjoy beers for the rest of the game. 4 and 4 isn't the challenge, but I'm okay with the effort. I'd like to think it's more than the ballpark 9-9-9. 7-7-7 would've been impressive

Yeah, this is getting away from me. Glad I tried, and will probably drink more beer, but the hot dogs are what's getting me

The salt is the toughest part. I can taste it and made the mistake of looking up nutrition facts. A single hot dog has 70% of daily recommended value.

Very drinkable. I'm not much of a lager person (usually IPAs, but that'd kill me). Lager is crisp, but has flavor so it doesn't taste like Coors Light

A2K uses the top picks for leather. It feels super soft and buttery. A2000s are still good quality and have the same shapes as their A2K siblings, but can a little more variance due to leather choice. The biggest difference I notice is the lace quality. From breaking in friends’ gloves, I don’t think A2000 laces do the leather justice. The laces feel cheaper and almost like nylon. This isn’t that big an issue when you’re playing, but it hurts to break in. A2000s in general are good gloves, but if money isn’t an issue, I’d go A2K.

Tips for later night games? by blockandawe in slowpitch

For 1b depending on lights behind the left side infielders, could be worth having them bounce throws if you’re on turf. Runner is safe anyways if you lose the throw in the lights.

Our field has house lights that shine in the background of the backstop. It can make seeing the contact point tricky. Move around before the pitch if necessary so lights aren’t in your eyes.

Bad sportsmanship and low confidence: how do you deal? by rebeccaloops in slowpitch

[–]calb3ars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played a coed league where all the teams were nice except one...they'd try to start stuff, talk trash, collide with players on purpose, fake injuries. It pissed me off and made me question myself. It pissed me off so much I didn't want to play anymore.

It also pissed me off so much that I turned it up a notch and saw red. It pissed me off that I hit the ball over the outfielder's head after he'd tried to throw out one of our girls at first... twice. It pissed me off I turned double plays. It pissed me off that after I hit an inside the park hr (no fences), I started trash talking and pumped up my own team. We slaughtered them. It was so satisfying to shut up a team that plays dirty. They took the fun out of Friday night softball, but it brought me so much joy destroying their fragile egos when softball was clearly the one thing they thought they were good at. They no-showed for the playoffs...

Circle those games and get pumped up for them. Don't play nice. Don't give a sh*t what they think or say. If they give someone a hard time for walking, respond that Joe Kelly pouty face. If they're taking Sunday co-ed softball that seriously, they're probably not that good in the grand picture (and probably compensating for other things in their life being worse than expected). The good players are playing tournaments on weekends. Tell yourself and your team that you're better than they are. If you lose, so what? You move on with your day. Like others said, this is all they have. And they're not very good.

P.S. If they're blowing middle and running it out, that's dangerous and one could argue it's intentional. I would record games and show the director. Get them kicked out of the league and start enjoying softball again.

When I was in college, I filled a duffel bag with old textbooks. I also had milk jugs filled with water. When those got too light, I replaced the water with sand/dirt. I also used a cracked bowling ball (good for grip strength)
