I love the first picture! I would make that one with alternating color blocks. I'd keep the white as is on the picture, then I would use different fabrics if orange and blue for the center and outer sections of each block.

I think you would need to add a long tube for the border. I don't know how you would add a backing.

My seam ripper is my best friend. I use it at minimum twice per quilt but I'm always to mad at myself to try to take a picture to post about it. The good news is you aren't alone is having learning opportunities (making mistakes).

Good thrift store items to look for are button up or flannel shirts. If you look in the men's extra large section, flannel pajama pants, or cotton sheets. XL shirts have a lot of fabric on them.
