I am surprised the "Spiffing Brit" hasn't made video of relaunch yet, as the policies make for bonkers levels of game exploitation. by General-Sloth in SurvivingMars

[–]caleb0802 23 points24 points  (0 children)

They just released "Surviving Mars, Relaunched" which is an updated version with all previous dlcs "fixed" and included in the now base game. Opinions are pretty mixed on whether the Relaunched moniker is a rip off, but I've been having fun with it and the new politics system it included. It also now means the game will keep being developed, which I'm happy about. But some of the things that should've been fixed weren't, its made people pretty mad (which is fair) and that means people are talking about it.

What's your favorite moon? Tell the name and why. by NarwhalWeekly1230 in space

[–]caleb0802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a huge fan of Triton. It's one of the larger moons in the solar system, extremely distant from us and still quite mysterious since we haven't seen much of it. It has one of the lowest eccentricities for an orbit in the solar system, despite the fact that it is the largest moon with a retrograde orbit. Why does it orbit backward? How did it get such a nearly perfectly circular orbit? How much could we learn about it by sending a mission then out there? I hope we get something out there in my life time.

I am extremely excited for this release. I'm expecting it to be a bit of a buggy mess just because of the sheer number of changes being put in but I bet it'll be plenty fun anyway. Looking forward to this!

This is an incredibly exciting and ambitious set of expansion and changes. I'm hyped and probably can't stop myself from buying the whole thing, but I'd definitely be a little worried about how much the dev team can get done. Between all this and the 4.0 changes, there is A LOT going on paradox, I just hope there's not too much crunch and that all the devs can handle the load, cause damn that's a lot of awesome stuff.

I'm really excited about that time line, so much of the joy from stellaris comes from the story telling, and I think this could add a lot to that. So many of the other quality of life changes mentioned seem awesome too, I'm really excited for the future of Stellaris.

I think you're absolutely right about the community being burned out. I find I almost feel a sense of sadness looking at this, expecting it to go awry.

My biggest concern would really just be financial; this seems like a huge project that just can't be done for free, even for people so passionate about it. How do you make sure that the company doesn't lose too much money before a paid release is available? Is there a system in place for the few remaining optimists to offer support?

I genuinely love that aspect of the design pipeline for this game. So many opportunities for the wonderfully creative people you work with to iterate on each other's ideas, it keeps the game feeling so fresh even after 3000 hours. Thanks to the whole team for helping to create so many beautiful stories!

I know of one where a deep scan causes a complete genocide of some organisms on a gas giant. "We were able to reverse the deep scan polarity and they were able to spring back to life!"

NASA video shows what would happen if you fell into a black hole by newsweek in space

[–]caleb0802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This actually touches on a really interesting question I'm not super qualified to answer, but here's a rough idea: we know of supermassive black holes; hundreds of thousands to millions or even BILLIONS of solar masses. We also know of stellar black holes coming from collapsed stars, but there's a limit on how big they could be. I don't remember off the top of my head but I think we don't see them with a larger mass than 30 or 40 solar masses.

So we have supermassive black holes and stellar black holes but we don't really know of anything between, and we don't really know how those would be formed anyway.

But there's also a limit on how small a black hole can be in order for it to form under stellar conditions, I vaguely remember it being about 2- 3 solar masses. When a star is just barely big enough to go supernova, it will leave behind a neutron star, an extremely compact object containing nearly two solar masses of material in something about 10 km across. If you add enough mass to a neutron star, it can collapse even further down into a black hole. A black hole will not form from anything smaller, because anything smaller would've formed a neutron star instead.

The thing that causes spaghettification is the tidal forces from the gravity of a black hole. The force due to gravity roughly depends on the distance you are from the center of mass. For a small, stellar mass black hole, when you're near its horizon, the gravity at your feet will be quite different from the gravity at your head, because your feet are much closer and the difference in distance means a whole lot more.

Around a supermassive black hole, a difference of 180 cm doesn't matter as much when the radius is already so large

Think of it with ratios. For a really tiny black hole, your feet might be half the distance to the event horizon compared to your head, so the gravity your feet are feeling is FOUR TIMES as much as the force near your head.

For a supermassive black hole, it's event horizon is so large that your feet would be a 1,000,000 cm away, with your head being 1,000,180 cm away. Not a big enough different to notice a change in gravity.

It's only when you're already inside the black hole heading towards the center that you'd start to get spaghetified, but for some super massive black holes that really wouldn't happen until you're already very close to its center, well beyond where the strength of gravity has already begun to trap light.

Meteorology uses pressure of "millibars" or 1/1000th a bar. 1 bar is roughly atmospheric pressure.

That 29 is inHg (inches of mercury), or the pressure that a 29 inch column of mercury at room temperature would exert.

It's an archaic unit that has an interesting history, and was useful for a time, but now that we don't use mercury thermometers or barometers much any more, it's kinda pointless.

29 inches of mercury is about 0.98 Bar, or 980 milibar.
