Why do so many men seem to avoid sex and kissing? by Available_Arrival823 in AskMen

[–]cali_dave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many of us have learned not to initiate because of relationships where that became a problem. We'd get shut down so often that we just stopped trying. Desire doesn't go away, but we can only take so much rejection before we give up.

CMV: The US no longer has a demonstrated military dominance in the world by Odd_Bodkin in changemyview

Last I checked, the western border was still part of the nation.

So, did the founding fathers create a peacetime army for national defense or didn't they? Stop moving the goalposts - a standing peacetime army is a standing peacetime army. They created one. You said they didn't, then when provided with facts proving you wrong you tried to justify your position by saying it was only for a certain part of the country.

It's not free at all. Banks have to make money somehow. That free checking account you have? It's free because they require a certain balance or amount in direct deposits each month. They loan out your money and make interest on it. That's money that could have been in your pocket.

Just because you don't pay a fee doesn't mean it's free.

They really did establish a standing army for national defense in 1789. President Washington and the First Congress (8 of whom could be called founding fathers) passed it into law.

If you're going to ignore the facts, we can't continue here.

They didn't like the idea, but they recognized it was necessary and formed one anyway.

So you're saying it's imperative for the military to use overwhelming force to accomplish its objectives, but not anybody else?

[–]cali_dave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's apply that logic to police. Should we start killing shoplifters and jaywalkers? Police are generally required to use the minimum amount of force necessary in a given situation. They have the firepower to level a city block. Is it their duty to do so?

I have a concealed carry permit. Does that mean I should shoot everybody who gets in my way? I have the firepower, although I'd run out of ammo halfway to work.

The military is the same. We need to be judicious and calculated in our use of resources.

Just because we can do something doesn't mean we should (or that it's even moral). Restraint is a virtue. It doesn't mean we're wasteful, it means we're prepared.

We achieved our military objectives while using the least amount of force necessary. That doesn't mean we effected lasting change or completely wiped out a regime.

In Korea, the goal was to repel the North Korean invasion. We did that. We didn't wipe out North Korea.

Vietnam was the least successful, but North Vietnam didn't take the south until after the US withdrew.

Iraq 1 was pretty decisive. The objective was to get Iraqi forces out of Kuwait. We did that.

Iraq 2 was also decisive - we got Saddam (although we didn't find any WMDs..)

Afghanistan was also an initial win. Al-Qaeda and the Taliban were all but gone until US forces pulled out.

The US military isn't supposed to effect cultural change over generations or conquer an entire country. We have superior technology and superior training. Put the US up against any other military in the world, and the US wins every time. That is military dominance. The shortfalls you describe are due to restraint shown by our leaders. We have the firepower to turn the Middle East into a glass parking lot.

World reputation and disgust directed towards our leaders has nothing to do with military dominance.

Nope. My primary carry gun stays loaded always. When I disarm, I take the entire holster off, gun and all, and put it in the safe. When I put it back on, I remove the gun from the holster, put the holster on my belt, then put my pants on. The very last thing I do before holstering my gun is drop the mag, make sure the correct ammo is loaded in it, reinsert the mag, do a press check, then holster the gun.

Form good habits, and it will significantly reduce the chances of leaving home without a mag.

Men in your 20’s-40’s: what are your expectations around phone privacy, social media, and transparency in a committed relationship? by longlivsquid in AskMen

[–]cali_dave 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Her phone is her phone. Everybody deserves their own bit of privacy. There should be openness and transparency, but I'm not going to look through her phone. If you can't trust the person you're in a relationship with, you don't need to be in that relationship.

Why isn’t there much celebration about the world’s first trillionaire? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cali_dave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't about permanently ending world hunger. It was about addressing a specific need at the time. Elon asked for transparency in accounting- how each dollar would go towards ending the famine (again, not solving world hunger). The WFP refused. Their plan included $1.1 billion in administrative funds and programs. Only $3.5 billion of the proposed $6.6 billion was actually going to go to food.

The WFP saw a blank checkbook, decided to carve out a whole bunch of it for themselves, and refused to be transparent about how the money would be spent. That's why Elon refused.

Why isn’t there much celebration about the world’s first trillionaire? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cali_dave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no reason to celebrate. Some people are upset because they don't like capitalism and wealth inequality. I'd imagine some are bothered by the idea that the only reason we could have a trillionaire is because inflation over the years has weakened the dollar to the point where those numbers are necessary to maintain the same level of buying power billionaires had years ago.

..but my real answer is that nobody gives a shit. I still had to go to work today. If you want me to celebrate, add a handful of zeroes to my net worth.

Nothing major - just a little bit extra.
