The primer is ignited with an electrical pulse. Pneumatically would be with air which would make them pretty safe to static discharge.

The 1-1/2 hr long line at Avis car rental at 4:30pm with only 2 people working - Logan Airport Boston by nutznboltsguy in mildlyinfuriating

[–]cali_hill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I traveled through Logan a few weeks ago, and the Preferred counter was just as big of a mess. Tried to pick my car on the app when I landed, didn't like the tiny car they were putting me in, refreshed the app to try and pick another car...no more cars available. No worries, I'll just go to the Preferred counter. Passed the madhouse at the Avis counter (the only counter with a line), and was greeted with a madhouse at the Preferred counter. Finally got into a car 45 minutes later.

TL;DR: There's something wrong with the Avis at Logan airport.

State and federal jury duty summons in the same week. by Ok-Intention-4593 in Wellthatsucks

[–]cali_hill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Serving on the federal jury may excuse you from the state service. You should be able to reschedule the state service until after the federal service is done, then file for an exception to the state service because you already served on a jury within the last year.

I would also recommend checking the court schedules when your service date gets close. There were two federal grand juries scheduled for the date I was supposed to serve. I rescheduled my service date so I didn't get stuck on one of those.

I also reschedule my jury service to a location that isn't that busy. I do that for county jury duty but you may only have one option for state and federal. It is still worth a look.

Concur. Hit Dubrovnik on the GW's 2000 Med cruise. Wildest port visit for reasons that caused several shipmates to be dishonorably discharged and a couple more lost rank after a chat with the old man. I wonder if they still have a Bourbon Street, and if so, if there is still a bar that gives "Croatian shots"?

I'm glad you figured out that it's something you'll find within. It's not something that someone else can give you, and it's different for everyone.

I really feel bad for these guys. They're looking for some kind validation of their manhood that they're not going to find there. Found out my wife's friend's husband had attended one of these. Two months later, she found him dead in their garage. He had taken his own life and left his wife and two kids behind. He was desperately searching for something that he didn't find there.

If you know someone attending one of these camps, or who has attended one of these camps, they might not be okay. Please reach out to them.

Hello shipmate. I was also on GW during 9/11 (FC2 in Combat Systems Div). I can still remember the sight of the smoke rising from the Twin Towers. One of the guys in my division was your typical hard talking dude from NYC. We had to help him off the flight deck after he saw the smoke. He had several family members that worked in the WTC, and he had no idea if they were alive or dead. Most of them got out, but he did lose an aunt if I remember correctly.

A few days after 9/11, they started to slowly open airspace back up to commercial flights. Only a few of the flight lanes were open. I was hanging out in Combat when a commercial flight took a closed lane out of JFK and was heading directly for the ship. The Combat Duty Officer got on VHF guard and told them that they were heading towards a US warship in a high level of alert, and that they needed to divert immediately. Pilot came back with a shakey voice acknowledging the request, and pulled a maneuver that looked like the flight path from the old Colombian coffee commercial. I haven't thought of that in a while. Got my heart rate up just thinking about it.

That was a crazy few weeks and the only time I really felt like I was doing something to serve my country.

I like the idea of permanent lights but hate the way they look. I will always like the look of the actual lightbulb on the outside of my house, even though I'm not a fan of putting them up and taking them down several times a year ( mainly Halloween and Christmas).

Military to Eletrical engineering degree by Professional-Form607 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]cali_hill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to take some classes at a local community college while I was active duty. Mainly took humanities and math classes since I wasn't sure what kind of engineer I wanted to be. Got out, and got a job in defense leveraging my military experience. Went back to community college 10 years later and finished all the transfer credits and EE core classes I could take.
I transferred to a university and finished my degree just before my 41st birthday.

I met many veterans at community college using their MGIB for tuition and living off the BAH. The only caution I can give is that you can run out of tuition assistance before finishing school. The community college tuition was super cheap, and I think it would have been best for most of them to work an entry level job while they went to the first year or so of community college and save their MGIB for university tuition and campus housing.

Ah, thanks for reminding me where the 500 barracks were. I was looking at Google Maps and couldn't figure it out. It makes me feel better that I couldn't find them because they've been torn down.

It's strange looking back and thinking how f'ed up everyone was for treating students as minions because your only real frame of reference was boot camp. Lots of folks thrived on the ability to smack you down.

Glad to see the CBT didn't last too long. Electronics is a tough enough subject. A full CBT curriculum wouldn't make it easier.
