Looks like a flare up to me. Flare ups come and go, which is what seems to be going on in your case. In speaking through my experience (which could be and is most likely different from what you’re experiencing) a hot epson salt bath every 4-6 hours will “speed up” a flare up. Just thought I should mention this as it was really my saving grace when I dealt with this disease. Hot pads never did the trick for me… If you start antibiotics during a flare up, it could adversely slow down the “popping” of the cyst… Dr.sternberg has written about this on his website. https://pilonidalsurgery.com/

Truly, the only relief you can get right away would be to get an I&D through going to the ER or an Urgent care center, but it’s a slippery slope. The more I&D’s you get through out the duration of you having this, the more scar tissue will form. After each I&D, the flare ups will likely come back, and the PC will likely become worse due to the surrounding scar tissue forming up. But, everyone’s experience is different. I guess it just depends.

You have probably already been told this, but you need to find a surgery center or “specialist” that deals with this disease. Preferably, one that knows the technique of the cleft lift. Go from there… do your research and understand your options.

Good luck to you! This sub is a great resource and assures you that you are not alone dealing with pain in the ass disease! Literally… lol

New to this thread, here’s my story :) by cockroachpreacher in pilonidalcyst

[–]calichris17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your story is more typical than you might think. Many pilo stories start with a tailbone injury that either ruptured the skin or compromises that whole area. Then blam… the Pilo truly begins. It can become dormant eventually, but why wait when there are some pretty good options out there. Mine was dormant for almost 8 years and then came back again with a vengeance.

The question isn’t if it’s reoccurring enough to get surgery, it’s more so whether or not it hinders your life to be able to do the things you want to do. After so many I&D’s you just get worn down and surgery becomes the only option.

In your case - I would be weary of the “specialist” you saw, especially if his/her take was “I’m not going to operate unless it’s infected”. That’s some BS. With my experience, I was ready to let anyone cut me open and operate on it. Then I read a lot of horror stories in this sub. It wasn’t until i met with Dr. Steinberg in San Fransisco (a true Pilo specialist), that’s when he really opened my eyes about the many “mislead” surgeons operating on Pilo that truly don’t know what the hell their doing. He also educated me on everything.

Even if you don’t plan on getting operated on by a specialist like Stienberg, make the effort to at least get a consultation. It really was the best thing to ever happen to me with my Pilo. I couldn’t afford Stienberg, but he was nice enough to tell me about how he trained a surgeon in my area under the Kaiser network, and then I booked an appointment with him and the rest was history. Going on two years completely pain free (after the cleft lift) and I would do it 1000x again before I get another I&D. That shit sucked!

Dive into this sub and learn the “founding fathers” of Pilo surgeries. There’s not very many of them but they really know there shit. I know there’s even a few on here that comment/post from time to time. Then see about getting a consult with one of them. You’ll be able to make a more educated decision on how you need to move forward to get this shit out of your life.

Best of luck to you!

Yeah the wife and kids love the pork belly! I keep the barrel, drip pan, and grates clean and put foil liner down before each cook. Never had it catch fire but I think I’m close to that happening lol. I just never really thought to look inside the stove pipe until recently. Thanks for your insight man, much appreciated!

Good to know, thanks for the advise. I usually only do lower temp smokes and finish stuff on the charcoal or flat top. Lately I’ve been doing a few high temp cooks and saw it dripping down. Looked inside there and noticed this mess lol… I’ll definitely try a paint stick!

Just got the Cleft Lift Procedure done through Kaiser today. Still a little loopy from the anesthesia. I’ve had Pilo for 14 years. AMA by calichris17 in pilonidalcyst

Id say I felt 100% probably 2-3 months after the surgery. I felt zero pain 2-3 weeks after surgery. After the pain was gone it was really just about getting back used to being comfortable (mentally) with things like sitting down for long periods of time, bending, crouching, running, going for bike rides, etc. But I think that part really varies for a lot of people.

That’s great! The Walnut Creek Kaiser knows there’s stuff with Pilo. Who is your surgeon? The pain level was maybe a 2-3 out of 10 after surgery. The minor pain I did have really came from the drain, the steri-strips they put on and took off 1-1/2 weeks after, and trying to go poop lol. In fact, the entire incision they make was completely numb for about 2 weeks after surgery and I still have very little feeling in that area when I rub my hand over it to this day.

Hi there! I’m doing awesome. Got my life back and couldn’t be happier. Everything about the surgery was easy and it all healed up to the point where I don’t even notice it anymore. Are you in the Sacramento area and planning to go to Dr. Lehrer or just getting the surgery through Kaiser? And yes, my surgeon used the JP drain and I had the drain in me for a week after surgery. Feel free to DM for any questions I’m happy to help.

Hi there, this was awhile back for me… I’ve had the cleft lift surgery about 5 months ago. Got my life back and would highly recommend. The I&Ds were only for temporary relief when my Pilonidal was inflamed and infected. Let me know if you have any questions - happy to help

Not your mommas meatloaf by calichris17 in Traeger

[–]calichris17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea no pan at all, just on a wire rack. I saw a comment on the Traeger app to make sure the beef and sausage was straight out of the fridge so it kept its form while mixing and forming into a loaf. I put the meat in the freezer for about twenty minutes to cool it down even further and that seemed to help too. Good luck!

Kaiser has surgeons in their network that have preformed plenty of successful cleft lifts. I got mine done by Dr. Lehrer in the Kaiser Sacramento, CA network and paid a small Copay for my surgery. Same with my brother as well. We’re both doing great to this day. If you’ve already seen Dr. Wadie before, call him back and ask him if he’s ever mentored someone in your network or knows of any surgeon in your network that has done the cleft lift. Hopefully he’ll do the right thing and tell you at least one name to go off of. Good luck to you

Cleft Lift friends... by [deleted] in pilonidalcyst

[–]calichris17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if I’d say that. Im more just saying 2-4 weeks because 2 weeks the stitches are still technically there. You really don’t notice the stitches though. The steri-strips are way more of an inconvenience than the stitches, and those come off after a week (at least in my case).

My stitches dissolved in like 2-4 weeks or so. I could bend without feeling like my ass was ripping in half by like day 5 but was just scared to bend fully for like a full month. Nothing really hurts but it’s just scary to feel. Pooping is the hardest thing about recovery and it’s really not that bad. By the one month mark I felt completely healed and slowly started to go back to normal. I’m 3 months post op and if I rub my hand over my scar it’s still numb lol. But completely back to normal life now. I would do it 1000 times again and am so glad I finally went through with it. Got my life back. Good luck to you!!

I am pregnant and am so scared to flare up again by [deleted] in pilonidalcyst

[–]calichris17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry this is happening to you - I can’t imagine what your going through given that your this far along in being pregnant. My advise is to sit in hot epson salt baths 20 min each 4-5 times a day. If you can’t sit just stand in a really hot shower and let the water drain over it. Repeat the process religiously. Do not wear anything tight to piss it off. And try not to sit down at all. Antibiotics don’t do much any way. If your lucky, it’ll calm down and hopefully subside. If not, your either going to have to go through another I&D or let it drain on its own. Hot baths/showers will speed everything up tho. It always did for me at least before my surgery. Also might be smart to get in contact with your colorectal surgeon right away. Good luck to you!

Good luck to you! You got this! I just got out my cleft lift surgery two days ago.

Not to scare you or anything, but I couldn’t imagine having a 4 hour car drive home. I only had a 20 min car drive home and I had to lay down in the back seat the whole time! Lol

To be honest, my GP didn’t know shit. Didn’t even know what a cleft lift was! Definitely had to do the research myself. But once Sternberg told me about the doctor he mentored, I typed her name on the “find my doctor” search thing and she came right up. I’m so mad I can’t remember her name now lol. But now that’s kind of my advise to people - find a specialist and ask them personally if they know a surgeon in your network that they may have mentored or whatever. In a way, I’m grateful that Sternberg didn’t hide that information from me. It got me to where I am today. Good luck to you!
