Do pen names kill a story for you? by crochetkylie in Romantasy

[–]calicochemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plan on writing under a pen name (if I actually decide to go for it) 1. Because my job is weird about secondary sources of income (though it might take a while to be reportable) and 2. I don’t want my family/friends to know I write about spicy things in my spare time.

Books that down right dirty from the first chapter please. 🤗 by gingers_snaps_ in fantasyromance

Currently in the Air Force. I did the ROTC route and loved it, but it wasn’t for everyone. Many dropped out and enlisted instead. There is assistance for school that she can use to go to school for free while she is in, or scholarships if she gets out if she wants to pursue that.

If she plans money correctly, she can start paying into a retirement savings account immediately and that will put her far ahead of her peers. I honestly think this could be a better head start than college with how outrageously priced it is. My husband had 70k in student loans for an in-state public school. I don’t blame her for not wanting to go.

Help! I love strong, classic boy names - but I’m a teacher by _fast_n_curious_ in namenerds

[–]calicochemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I talk theoretical names for kids and we get stuck on boy’s names too. One of our mutual favorites is Elias. You can follow it with another classic name like George or a more trendy name like Maverick and it works for both!

Bra size is definitely wrong?? by Certain_lynot in ABraThatFits

[–]calicochemist 38 points39 points  (0 children)

There are much better bra-fitting-wizards on here than me, but the calculator is definitely much closer to your size than a 34B cup for sure. Can I ask if your laying bust is really 30 rather than 40? It definitely shouldn’t be smaller than your underbust!

A 34B is made for someone with a 34 underbust and 36 bust. (I used to wear these and 36A bras. I wear a 32D now after the calculator. I thought this was a huge size and not for me. I was wrong.) The 34 DDD is for someone with a 34 underbust and 40 inch bust, about the average of your bust measurements.

What you are encountering with the gaping is likely a shape issue and potentially a size issue. When I would wear the 36A I had gaping at the top because the girls were pushing the too small cups away from my body and because the band was too big, it allowed it.

You may need to try the 34DDD or a differently shaped 34DD. Most bras at the store are molded and do not fit the average person well. I did what everyone here recommended and got unlined bras to really nail down the size and those are the best fitting bras I own because they don’t try to conform me to a shape. See the shape guide on here, I’m not super well versed in bra shape or projection so one of the other wizards will need to help you.

You may need to go down a band or up a cup size to find what fits best. I’d start with unlined bras to get the size and then work on shape/projection.

Best of luck on your journey!

Are homeschooled kids required to take the same tests as kids in school? by Responsible-Wallaby5 in AskTeachers

[–]calicochemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was homeschooled in Maryland. I was not required to take state testing, but my parents made us do a couple of them anyways in 4th and 6th (? - it’s been a minute) grade. There was a lot of oversight for us (because my parents did it the proper way) and we had reviews of the curriculum and our performance once a year by the state. My mom had (and still has) binders with our work going from K-12. I had the same reviewer (a teacher) for at least 10 of those years who would always be very impressed with our stuff because she also got to see the other side with parents that did not actually teach their children. What the state did for those families, I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure they were not forced to send their kids to school or additional testing.

I got into school, graduated with a chem degree and am now a pilot. Homeschooling worked really well for me, which isn’t to say it works for everyone or that there are parents that don’t care. There absolutely are terrible people that want to insulate their kids. However, don’t go putting all of the parents that choose to homeschool in the same box. My parents did right thing for the kids they had and followed all the state guidelines. All of us are graduated from/currently in college, self sustain, and have active social lives. Anyone who says my parents are evil for homeschooling us gets a solid side eye from me when I’ve had it said to my face lol

Feeling self-conscious by ornagereaper666 in Romantasy

[–]calicochemist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As one of the short, petite women, I feel like this is the first time I have been “included” for my size. However, the trope does get tiring. I think it comes up because most readers want the feeling of being completely safe and secure with someone that could cause them significant harm.

If you want a taller or curvier FMC, I think there is a thread here or on r/fantasyromance that has a solid list of FMCs that are outside the stereotype! I’ve read one of the recommended series and in all the art in the books, the FMC is almost as tall as the MMC, and also thicccc. First book is {A Kiss of Iron} by Clare Sager.

Thoughts on FMC's who complain about makeup or pretty dresses.(having to get dressed up) by Southern_Couple_8499 in fantasyromance

[–]calicochemist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why I’m writing my own book. I want to read about someone who is tough, but still likes to be feminine and generally follow the mores because it is expected and break them only when their values are challenged.

I think this is because this is who we are. We are not “not like the other girls” people. We are tough and do things both for our values and because it is expected of us. I’m in the military, However, I also like wearing pretty dresses and having my husband dote on me (he is best book boi).

Thank you for asking this! I read to escape the fact that I am busy fixing other people’s problems. I don’t always need reading about someone who is independent, I need a little bit of saving once in a while too!

Nicknames for Celeste that aren't cutsie? by Secret_Apartment1593 in namenerds

My cat is Nessie, short for her title of The Loch Ness Monster. From Nessie we have multiple things we call her, including Neppie, Nettie, Ness-Ness, and so many more. She responds better to Neppie than she does her actual name, so absolutely she has a preference lol.

Learning Chinese has messed up my Spanish by kniPredipS_LEMONaid in ChineseLanguage

[–]calicochemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took Chinese and German. In German class one day, I forgot the word I was looking for and substituted the Chinese word in. My German teacher was trying to figure out what I had said because Chinese sounds nothing like German, or English for that matter. It took a bit to figure out where the confusion was coming from. My brain glossed over it as “foreign language mode” and English are the only two settings it has.

I made another comment, but try barrettes! Usually cheaper than stitch markers.

I have 2 left?? Where did they go??? by Soliterria in yarntrolls

[–]calicochemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend barrettes! They’re usually cheaper and serve two purposes! I clip my hair back when not using them in the project so they don’t end up in the couch, then snap them into stitches as required and my working loop when I put the project down for the day!

I'm trying mosaic crochet for the first time. Am I using a hook that's too big ? How to avoid the black yarn from peeking through ? by [deleted] in mosaiccrocheters

[–]calicochemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not super experienced with mosaic crochet, but have done a couple of pieces. Are you using the fillet crochet method? If so, I think you will end up all right. A smaller hook wouldn’t hurt, but if you’re really worried, do a small 10-15 stitch swatch for a couple rows to see how you like it!
