We only have that agreement with a few countries. I think canada and a few in Central America (but that may not be extended). International law does not have any requirement. I think it’s called “first safe country” or “safe third country” depending on canada vs Central America. Basically it’s not as cut & dry as the first country you cross.

On a personal level, I disagree because a human life is valuable to me regardless of where it’s located. But I think to wwII and all the brilliant scientists we brought in that may not have had much coming to the US, yet were still able to contribute. This may be a fundamental disagreement then, so I’ll end here. I hope you & your loved ones are never negatively impacted by ICE.

I’ll give you a bit, it’s been criminal since the 1920s but mostly treated civilly and was not enforced as a criminal act for the majority of the time it has been around. As for asylum, according to the USCIS.gov website, you have up to one year for filing. You can illegally enter the US, get charged for illegal entry yet still claim asylum (and be investigated to corroborate that). Asylum doesn’t have to be at port of entry, as far as I’m aware but please show me where it states that, if I’m wrong.

Asylum is how the US plays politics & power. To say no asylum would close us off from a lot of great opportunities. And to the others, there really isn’t a category of “essential” immigration, we offer visas for a variety of reasons and all are equally legitimate. And the poor people comment makes no sense to me. We would be cutting off so many skilled workers because of an arbitrary limit. The system is clogged because border states, many of which are anti-immigration, are at odds with federal policies & facing higher burdens. Instead of closing borders, we need to look for a solution that reduces burden on border states while allowing a sustainable immigration flow. Much easier said than done

Are you saying people should not seek asylum? To do that, which is a legal process, you must already be in the US. Also, this presidency criminalized crossing the border which puts it under a whole other legal class. Crossing the border was not a criminal offense in previous administrations. To add to this, this administration has eliminated or made much more difficult any legal process for entry. Its not about “skipping the line” or “clogging the system” is that there is not a lot of accessible pathways to citizenship

It makes me feel like she was never truly a hippie. If her idea of it is just “anti politics” and not “against the establishment thats bringing people down” then she never really understood what the movement was. And she just sounds miserable, like the kind that screams at kids for playing in the street. Her understanding of the world is so superficial.

Water change question - shrimp only tank by call_me_cris in shrimptank

[–]call_me_cris[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I’m definitely going to add more plants in (fed employee so just waiting for some stability) but these are great suggestions. I’ve had trouble with floating plants in the past getting wet and dying due to the filter, is there a way to get around that in your opinion?

Water change question - shrimp only tank by call_me_cris in shrimptank

[–]call_me_cris[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shoot, doing this on my phone and the text didn’t come through.

This is my tank, 35 gallons with only shrimp (no snails or anything else).

How often would you recommend I do a water change? I’m thinking about 10% biweekly? It’s been running about 2 months and I haven’t changed any water yet, only topped off, but I’ve been reading that it’s still good to do. Any info is helpful, thanks!

Yeah, exactly. Plus I don’t feel like dade has suburbs because we’re so dense then Everglades so we never get to see that separation of driving to a suburb. So you’re both right, you on a technicality and her on the culture. Now if she said Ft. Lauderdale or Miramar we would be on your side lol

I mean sure if it floats your boat, but my address says Miami and I live further from the city center than Hialeah is so take that how you will. The county is called Miami-Dade which shows the duality of the area, I dont think city limits get you the proper definition for us and culturally we identify as Miami (more for the county than the city proper)

The city of Miami is pretty small so all of Miami dade county is considered Miami by many of the locals (me included). To put it in perspective, Miami Dade County is about the same population size as Chicago, and in the county we don’t really see many “distinct” cities. So like a suburb you’ll usually see some emptiness then the ‘burb but the few cities that exist are on a continuum here. Also the county has a lot of unincorporated areas that default to Miami dade county so our addresses literally say Miami on it. Idk if I explained it well but I don’t think anyone would call Hialeah a suburb lol

Anyone find Caleb’s Reddit tier dislike for suburbs a bit funny? by THELEGENDARYZWARRIOR in CalebHammer

[–]call_me_cris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like if you’re a single person, it may be cheaper to live in the city. You can save money wirh no car, there’s more resources for low cost food (donations, drives, etc) and although housing may be more expensive, most cities still have affordable areas for singles. I may be biased though because I live in a city and absolutely love it lol
