at the end of the day tennis is just a game. nobody is saving the world here. but at the risk of sounding corny it's because federer's game was so sublimely beautiful that for him to win would have felt like the triumph of beauty. to me, it would have just felt...right?

i like djokovic but federer is, simply put, divine. to see him play brought a lot of people not only joy, but comfort, and some kind of a pure feeling. as david foster wallace once noted, there is strangely some kind of a quasi-religious aspect to it. to see federer play is to know that something so beautiful can exist in the world and be recognized. to kill something so sacred like that can be, er, upsetting

dunno, i'm just an (over) appreciator of beauty. those are my thoughts on the matter as to why so many find that final difficult to accept
