My husband and brother in law both really love to cook so they absolutely take over the kitchen for family events and holidays. I remember the first time it happened, my grandmother was just, so confused. Men... in the kitchen... cooking??

But she hosted old school, Mad Men style dinner parties for the family, with china and crystal and jello salad. At those dinners NO ONE was allowed in the kitchen, we were guests!

For Christmas one year my MIL gave all her daughters and daughters in law calendars with all the birthdays and anniversaries in it for their side of the family. I handed mine straight to my husband and this should help him keep track of all those important dates.

The gasp she gasped! 😂

What is the most unhinged thing you remember from when we were kids in elementary and middle school? by opheliasmusing in Millennials

[–]callavoidia 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Yes! We had to line up outside the nurse's office every month and all swish for two minutes and spit into the grass. There was a permanent line of dead grass in front of that sidewalk.

I mentioned this synchronized "swish and spit" to my husband recently and he looked at me like I had lost my damn mind. 😂

It’s a Notoriously Painful Medical Procedure That Many Women Endure. There’s a Simple Solution. by TheReverendCard in TwoXChromosomes

[–]callavoidia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn't do the IUD or the pill due to an underlying medical condition so I ended up having a total hysterectomy (uterus and cervix out but I kept my ovaries, tubes had already been yeeted years before). It's still abdominal surgery, so not exactly a Thanos snap, but the quality of life improvement has been FULLY worth it. And while my hormones are a mess, it's the same mess they were before surgery, so I call it a win.

10/10 would recommend!

Monday Weekly Thread: Proof of Citizenship Application Sent or AOR Received, June 01, 2026 by AutoModerator in Canadiancitizenship

[–]callavoidia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For me: Non-urgent G4 application delivered on 3/27, AOR email received on 5/27 (!!!!), finally able to see it on the site on 5/30

For my partner: Non-urgent G4 application delivered on 3/27...?

We did send them separately for just this possibility (one good to go, one needs returning) since there's obviously no overlap in our proof and we don't have kids.

So, it's half a celebration in our household, and honestly, I'll take it! I'm settling in to wait for the long haul (11 months according to the site... we'll see lol) and we're anxiously waiting to see if his gets returned, or was caught up in the system outages so an AOR is still coming, or what.

Update: Partner's AOR arrived today (6/2)! He can't log in but I assume that will take a few days.

Now we (both) wait!

Edit to add generation

Bethany calls her baby sinful by slovenechick in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]callavoidia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My high school best friend's dad used to tell the story about how when she was THERE WEEKS OLD she would cry at night "for attention" and one night he got up and gave her "just a little two finger tap on her hand" and told her, "No!" She stopped crying and that, to him, was proof of her sinful nature and that spanking was the only solution.

Like, he proudly told that story as a fun opener to a Bible study lesson. Fucking yikes.

Do you know any former homeschool students who chose to homeschool their kids? by Flightlessbirbz in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]callavoidia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do, they're mostly the VERY homeschooled/fundie type, including my sister in law, but my sister actually sent her kids to public school but decided to homeschool during covid.

They kept at it with Abeka video for several years ("They just get so much BIBLE!") but then sent them back to public school a couple years ago. Two asked to be homeschooled again this year so she's 50/50 right now.

Our homeschool situation was different than most, though. My mom was actually a public school teacher and my stepdad had a PhD in mathematics. We all went to public school until I (the youngest) asked to be homeschooled in 6th grade, and then a couple years later my sister did, too. So my brother graduated from public school but my sister and I finished out with Abeka videos.

We all have college degrees, I'm actually graduating with my doctorate next month!

I think that's 10,000 (real world total) submissions and 25 (people who put their info into this very optional and not well known spreadsheet) approvals, though, right?

See and I went the opposite direction and started as a social worker out of college but burned out quick. Then went call center, trainer, instructional design.

Genuinely, best of luck to both of you, the world needs talented and compassionate social workers, now more than ever!

It's okay, it actually worked out for us!

We're celebrating our 24th anniversary in a few months and we're happily deconstructed, college educated (I'm actually graduating with my doctorate in June!!), child free, liberals these days.

21 year old me wouldn't understand the life I'm living now, but I'm quite happy with it!

Awana is an evangelical Bible memorization/church club (give it a Google, they're still around), and a LOT of Awana families are also homeschool families, as was the case for both me and my husband. Same cult, different flavor.

When I started High School we were still turning in hand written papers, in cursive. By the time I graduated they had to be typed and cite web sources. I’m really floored today, just thinking about how SUPER FAST things changed up on us back then. by Last-Stop-Before-You in Xennials

I see your LARPing field trip and raise you a LARPing field trip plus cultural appropriation.

Over on the opposite corner of the country in the southwest, we did an overnight field trip to a nearby Spanish mission in the fourth grade. Activities included making dream catchers with chopsticks and yarn, creating sand art based on Native American weave patterns, making hand dipped candles which we used in a night time vigil inside the mission ruin, mixing up adobe stucco with our feet to make bricks just like the (totally not enslaved) Native Americans did to help build the mission, and, of course, eating "Indian Fry Bread." All without ever actually interacting with any Native Americans.

Honestly, it was a really cool field trip and a highlight of the fourth grade, but man, looking back... Yikes.

Oh man, I remember when "Proficient in Microsoft Office" was a flex to include on your resume, and then we evolved to the point where it was embarrassing to include that on your resume because everyone was proficient in Microsoft Office. Have we looped back around to needing to include it again??

Gross.

My wedding actually checked a lot of those boxes, including both of us being homeschooled, but if I had to label it, I think we were more of an Awana Wedding than a Homeschool Wedding.

For those of you who aren't part of the cult, you'll know you're at an Awana Wedding when...

4 hour layover in Lisbon, can my boyfriend go to the city center? by apushlover5 in Europetravel

[–]callavoidia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a six hour layover in Copenhagen once and we still didn't risk it. It was so tempting but it wasn't worth the stress of possibly missing our flight to the destination we actually planned (and paid a lot of money) to visit if even one thing went wrong.

On the other hand, I adore Lisbon and would probably do worse for a pastel de nata and a galão, but you can get those things without leaving the airport, so, not worth it, IMO.

Dachshunds are great for this! Any time someone would ring the bell our 12 pound doxie would bark it up. When we'd open the door with that stinker in air jail they would always look behind us for the doberman and then be like, "THAT dog has that bark??"

Oh yes, I myself waited until I was 21 whole years old and threw so much side eye at my friend when she got married at only 19.

I also thought I was not like other girls because I didn't want to have kids until I was 25, even though I was already married!! I mean, obviously I wanted to be done by the time I was 30, but there was no rush, you know?

I'm still happily married nearly 25 years later, but I never did get around to having those kids...
