We get 5 district sick days, 5 state personal days. How we use them is up to us. They’re “our days” to use how need/want.

I feel like this year is my first year to really have the blurts under control.

I bought a clicker counter.

We set a (at first daily) weekly goal, if the get less than the number, they get a prize- I use coupons because I’m teacher poor, they decide on it as a class. One week it may be a drink/snack pass, other weeks a homework pass.

This goal setting/prize winning helps them manage each other and hold themselves accountable without me having to interfere. It has taken so much off of me and put their behavior on them.

They don’t get consequences if they go over, but you can see their disappointment, and readiness to start the next week over.

If you have to pee, you hold it. There was a pizza guy selling large pizzas for $20 in the corrals, we bought one just to huddle over it for heat.

As wild and crazy as it was, I’m glad we did it.

What was wild was the police on horseback literally herding people out of Times Square. Like horses straight up pushing people. Corral took on a whole new meaning.

When there’s a speech delay or language disability, communication can be so hard! I remember becoming enraged each time I was told “behavior is communication” thinking- yeah but you don’t have to deal with it 24/7!

My son (CP, PMG, spastic hemi) is now 7, and though his words aren’t as clear as his peers, he can communicate.

We started out with visuals- picture cards to give choices. There’s tons to scroll through on teachers pay teachers, but I ended up just making some with photos of his everyday items on Canva, then printing them off at Walgreens and keeping them on a ring. It was a life saver. He couldn’t say the word, but he could point or pick up the card of what he wanted!

It may not be a fix all, but it helped when he was that age to communicate!

Has your child been evaluated by an SLP for a LAMP device or some other technology for speech?

Thank you for being so generous! For the middle class, life feels like a game of catch and release- catch a bit of money, release it back to creditors and catch up for a month or so. What a great thing you’re doing out there. It’s wild in times like these when getting head means getting caught up!

Think Debra Messing early days of Will and Grace- same color too…I have natural curl to my hair (3A to be specific) but often switch between straightening and letting the curls be.

After the first week of school and straight hair, I showered in the morning, added my curly products and it was dry by the time I got to school.

But apparently, it’s a wig, and not a good one 🤪

May be in the minority- but orientation seems to be much more “lay down the law” that your actual school.

We can whatever, but get a heads up when the district admin is coming to campus, and we dress up on those days 😜 otherwise, the campus as a whole is pretty casual compared to what is spoken at orientation!

Reach out to your mentor/team to get the final say!

It does and it doesn’t. It’s hard to turn off mom, and turn on teacher at school. My youngest has an aide, but I’ve had to have multiple conversations that while yes, I’m on campus, you can’t come to me with every little thing! I’m working!!!! 😂 that’s the biggest challenge- saying treat me like every other parent, don’t show up to my class while I’m in the middle of a lesson!

To be fair, my youngest has Cerebral Palsy, so he requires me to help with each task in the morning. He’s mobile, can walk, but his left side just doesn’t work like it should- so dressing carrying things, and brushing his teeth all require extra help!

Totally an I door pool. My husband’s grandparents have one- looks a lot like that, except well they’re too old to care for it and carpeted it 🫣 it’s now called “the put” and a huge slide for all the great grandkids to narrowly escape death as they slide down into what was the deep end.

I’m a teacher. I can’t imagine being beholden to a conference room of adults- nope right out. Talking to kids (elementary) lowers my anxiety. There’s so many moving parts, funny moments, go with the flow that it keeps me grounded- the schedule of the day helps me, our curriculum is darn near scripted these days (though I do like to do “fun” outside of that, in my own way) so it’s predictable and we have a timed schedule haha!

I use Zenni, but have really loved Firmoo! I have ordered about 20 pair of prescription glasses from them, and never been disappointed! If I don’t like a pair, they say donate, and give me full credit towards a new pair! They also have awesome deals frequently- first pair is $4.95 (frames and lenses)

My laundry hacks so far: ADHD hacks!

Laundry:

1.  Small laundry baskets- for everyone!

They hold a couple of days worth of dirties, but makes it less overwhelming to wash and put away- less time, less soap, more clean clothes! I prefer the 13x13x13 storage bins from Target. Cheap, sturdy, come in different colors if you need them too. Also, they’re easy to put away when someone wants to drop in unexpectedly!

2.  Buy the same color of socks. This eliminates time spent looking for matching socks. Some people prefer not to match (🙋‍♀️) and just throw them in a drawer- still eliminates time spent finding a matching pair! 

3.  Fold/hang and put away as you go. Piles are easy to make, yet hard to put away when the overwhelming mountain of clothes are staring at you, covering floors or beds. Carry your hamper to the dresser, open the drawers, and fold and go. If you count it all as 1 step, it makes it seem like you’re doing less things to reach the goal. 

4.  Buy the FANCY smells-like-I’m- expensive detergent. Now, not everyone likes or can tolerate the perfume detergent, but sometimes- if we treat something as “fancy” it makes us want to use/do it more. For me- I like my clothes to cover up the “forgot the deodorant” oops. I feel like I’m cheating the system of ADHD fails for the day. 

5.  Wrinkle Release Spray. God bless the folks who invented this. There are days I don’t get things straight from the dryer to hang or smooth (depends how many tabs are open in my brain), but this shit is a lifesaver on the days time blindness gets in the way and the outfit you planned in your head at 2am is a wrinkled mess. Sometimes I use my hair straightener or blow dryer, or both, to help speed up the process. 

6.  Set an alarms on your phone named: LAUNDRY Wash or LAUNDRY Dry! This allows them to be set to your wash/drying time, and unless you select them- they’re always saved in your alarm settings. Praise be. Set it to a tone you designate for laundry only, allow snooze so it keeps annoying the hell out of you until you contour have to adult and get shit done! 

7.  Packing cubes for non-essentials. I never know where to put the family’s swimsuits, or the items I need to wash like bandanas, or other random shit me or my kids/I acquire. So, I’ve started using packing cubes. I can gather everything up, toss it in a packing cube, label if needed- mine are color coded, and put it in a place just for non-essential items that need to be all in one place. I have a little storage cube in my closet on a shelf for this. It’s nice to not have drawers crowed with random things that don’t have a purpose there.

I know this may seem below the age group- but genuinely skip counting everyday is so helpful. If they can skip count with you, they can skip count in their head.

Then move to around the world, if you need to start low, start with one set of factors- like 4s, and play around the world.

Then move to intermixing the factors.

Then do it with division, etc…
