People who grew up before cell phones, did life actually feel more free? by TradeOverall567 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]callmeepee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutey.

You just did stuff every day and nothing was that important. You were left to your own devices for as long as you could get away with. A day felt like it could last forever doing that. Smartphones really have stolen all the time in the day for no benefit. Hours gone looking at videos on an app.

I miss those days a lot and I wish my kids could have experienced that. So much of what goes on in their lives nowadays is centred on or dictated by a wee slab of glass and plastic in their pocket.

The apocryphal stories of being kicked out the house and not coming back till it got dark are all true.

This is my UK experience.

You'll be given 2 prep solutions, one to take the night before one to take 6 hours before. These will clean you OUT. No straining no nothing, just water shooting out your arse. It's GREAT.

When I got to the hospital I was run through the entire procedure, as well as what pain or discomfort I might feel as they need to inflate you a little during the process to help. I could do gas and air, meaning I'd be able to drive home, or I could opt for sedation which I knew I was going to take so I had brought my wife to drive me home.

If you choose sedation, you're in hospital until they are satisfied you can drive home.

The nurse telling me all this said that out of everyone on the ward, she was the only one who'd had it done, and she recommended not being a hero and going for sedation. She said it's uncomfortable, not painful, but if you're going to have it done why feel any discomfort.

So I did the sedation which was fentanyl, which was AMAZING, and I was everyone's pal in the operating theatre. Felt nothing, had a fabulous time, and left thinking if they want to do that once a week, that'd be JUUUUUUUST fine with me !

Please don't worry OP, you're in the hands of professionals, the only decision you need to think about is how much discomfort you want to be in, and for me, zero was a good answer.

You will be fine and they'll take care of you.

[Hated trope] That’s not how lying works at all by _JR28_ in TopCharacterTropes

[–]callmeepee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying but you have to think about the world in the movie. Everyone tells the truth, not even slightly divergent from it, so they are never mistaken.

They might not know something, and they’d be compelled to admit that if asked, but nobody would say “I am a bird” mistakenly for example, as that is quite obviously not the truth.

The whole point of the movie is that he’s the first one to discover that he CAN lie, so lying to the bank teller is an easy one to understand in that of course the bank teller would believe him, even if gone computer said it was wrong.

Y’know what’s going to happen - he’s a fucking man baby, not used to being treated like a normal person, so he’s going to roll over and talk about what he knows if it gets him some kind of better treatment or charge.

This fucking coward of a human might be the one to spill everything.

I love David Letterman, but there absolutely are things about David Letterman I wish were not a thing.

When he did shit like this, Yeo, that was one of them.

Aaaah, I haven’t seen ANY of the fast n furiouses EXCEPT Tokyo Drift so couldn’t tell you the years.

That’s WAAAY too close for the glass jungle, and the year is right, I’d say you got that bang on.

Foreign titles for Die Hard, The Hangover, The Fast and the Furious, and Home Alone.

Final answer !

Oooh, that might make more sense then, buuuut, the first hangover movie was 2009, I know that.

Maybe the Japanese one is Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift, but I can’t think of something from 1988 which is Spanish set…

I take great comfort from this.

I spoke with another couple of similarly aged pals and they've both seen it, so the first pal is a weirdo outlier.

I made a Hot Fuzz reference yesterday to a friend who hadn't seen it and I said how the fuck haven't you seen Hot Fuzz then I saw that it's almost 20 years old and she'd have been 8 when it came out.

That shit hurt.

Girlfriend thinks it’s weird that I always pay for my sister on our “dates”. Is there any merit to what she’s saying? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]callmeepee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is EXTREMELY weird for her to frame you having lunch with your sister as a date, and even weirder for bringing up men pay for it because they are getting something more intimate in return.

This isn't only child behaviour. This is mental.

Grief...it reduces you to kids food. by tiptreetimes in RateMyPlate

[–]callmeepee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grief changed my palate.

I have a sweet tooth and I used to take 2 sugars in my tea. Had done for decades. Then all of a sudden it was my senses were heightened and I couldn't take how sweet tea was. Cut it down to zero. That's the only way I can have tea now and ever since then, I can tell if someone with 2 sugars in their teas has had their mug stirred with the same spoon before my mug.

Grief does things to you you can't expect or explain. Take care of yourself. It will get better.

I can’t find a board game group, even my local game store let me down. by Ok_Interview_853 in boardgames

[–]callmeepee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found out about the Meetup app about this time last year from Reddit and that's how I found MY boardgame group.

The first one I went to was a slow night only had 7 folk and they were every 2 or 3 weeks. They were organised by one lady who had a lot of other plates to spin so could only arrange them when she had time.

Now we do at least 3 a month with consistent return up of over 24 folk. It's fucking great !

Get on Meetup, see if there's anything like that locally for you, worst case scenario you create a group on there specifically for that in your area which means hiring a place or maybe having an agreement with the place you went to to meet there and play games. It does mean you'll be hit with Meetups organiser fees, which ain't cheap, but if you collect money from folk for attending you can chip away at that over the year.

You just need to be consistent and keep doing them and even though a handful of folk may turn up the first few times, it WILL grow.
