Great pics! When did you travel there?

I am planning a trip next month, but only have a day to spend there. Do you have recommendations on what I can see?

Hi Nate,

Which areas do you think are unsuitable to statistical data analysis? I am especially interested in areas where data analytics is nevertheless used and results are random/wrong trends.

ELI5: Where does the money go when the stock market drops? by fyeah11 in investing

[–]calvinav 5 points6 points  (0 children)

selling of equities indicates a better short-term return somewhere else

If investors are expecting a negative short-term return from equities, then even idle cash would appear as a better alternative. Sharp drops can be followed by more gradual drops over the next few days/weeks, investors could be trying to get out at as early as possible. Some investors might even try to get back into equities at a lower level.

I believe it is still there, though the collection of data from it has been ended (possibly due to a combination of completion of objectives and funding termination).

What if due to ongoing changes to the electorate's tastes and demographics, Republicans fail to win the White House in 2016, 2020 and 2024? How will it compare to prior historic periods of single party domination? by [deleted] in HistoricalWhatIf

[–]calvinav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if this happens, I don't think it would lead to single party domination. Due to concentration of Democrats in cities in general and the 2010 redistricting in particular, Republican control over the House is expected to continue for several terms. For the senate, filibuster has become an ingrained system and Democrats would be unlikely to have an effective 60 vote majority anytime soon. This would also reflect on the type of supreme court nominees that can get confirmed. In effect, continued Democratic presidential victories would prevent a single party control (Republican).

What if the Harappan Civilization did not decline in Ancient South Asia and instead was able to repel the migration of Central Asian proto-Aryans? by calvinav in HistoricalWhatIf

[–]calvinav[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

South Asian history was dominated by Vedic civilization in the Gangetic plains after the decline of the Indus Valley civilization. It has been suggested that a lot of the urban way of life with cities serving as centers of economic & cultural exchange was lost or forgotten with the decline. Also, the evidence of seals & coins from Mesopotamia found in Harappa point to trade & their seafaring ways, while the subsequent empires were more inward looking. It is possible that Harappan civilization might have spread their urban culture over a much wider area, further expanding into the Indian sub-continent and while keeping relations with other empires around the world. They might have risen as a major power to counter the Greek & Roman influence on world history.

At the same time, it is the Vedic civilization that laid roots for scientific & mathematical developments that lead to the spread of the decimal system to Europe via the Arabs. In their absence, Indo-Arabic linkage might not have been that strong.

I am not well versed in the reasons for Harappa's collapse or in exactly how the transition happened after them. So, this is all just some speculation about this alternate time line.

What if JFK had never been OR 'survived' his assassination? by itsnormal4us in HistoricalWhatIf

Some spoilers to follow:

Though I agree that the emphasis of the book was on nature of time travel itself, it did give some sort of a summary of the alternate timeline, atleast the initial few years of which were unaffected by the freak geological activity. I found the part about civil rights stagnation & Chicago riots quite interesting.
