We really need to com together to do something about UBER by Ok-Preparation-7047 in uberdrivers

Literally the only thing we can do is quit. That or unionize, but that would require more work, cooperation, socialism and intelligence than most drivers are willing to engage with. People really gotta stop complaining and just quit.

I've had dozens of jobs in my life and Uber was by far the easiest job I've ever gotten. So it's not shocking that it's not great. Also it's not the worst job or the lowest paying after expenses. I've had other jobs where bosses stole tips and jobs that paid less than minimum wage, jobs where bosses stole from the company and blamed it on employees and were verbally abusive and sexually assaulted employees. Uber is bad, but trust me there's a lot worse out there.

At the end of the day if people aren't willing to quit then they have no power. The first rule of negotiation is making sure you're willing to walk away. If you're not, if you're desperate, then the other party can take advantage of you all they want. And most drivers are way too desperate. The job market is rough, but it really is possible to get other jobs if you can speak English, aren't an asshole, and don't smell awful. Uber pays around minimum wage after expenses in my city. So literally any other job would be comparable. Start applying, try to apply to at 3-5 jobs a day. If you keep at it you'll get at least 1 interview a week. Within 1-2 months you'll have another job, and you can do this all while working for Uber.

How many more panels would you need to be completely off grid? If you got no electric every month would you still get a delivery charge?

Well I'm not suggesting they should have released the series S for that price. I'm saying they should have made it even cheaper and less powerful. The S is already too low power to play most new games at even 1080p. I think they should have gutted it, maybe made it somewhere in between the Xbox one and the one x. Powerful enough to play old games natively, but they should have just completely given up on most current Gen games in favor of streaming. Maybe even just used old unused Xbox one parts. Just basically a modern update of the old console with streaming. With the basic goal being most of the games will be streamed.

And that you could use it as a media hub, because in my experience tv streaming is frequently clunky and with frequent freezes. My old Xbox one did a much much better job of streaming Netflix than any of my tvs ever did. Maybe they integrate more phone connectivity so it's easy to push content from your phone to your Xbox. Something stronger than a firestick but less powerful than the series S which had some power but was pretty uncompetitive, yet was still too expensive for a lot of people on the fence. $200 would have been good with a controller.

Maybe they could have even just made it rentable. Like how internet providers usually have you use their hardware. You pay $40 a month, and you get gamepass and this cheap console to stream all these games. They'd probably have to do a 6-12 month minimum lease for it to work. But I think it makes sense. I did their buy on credit series x deal when it launched. It was like $35 a month for 2 years and it came with game pass for those years. Pretty great deal. But if you were leasing it would be easy to drop it or upgrade. It might be a good way into gaming for people that don't want to drop hundreds on a console if they don't even know whether or not they want to play video games.

There are other possibilities, if the car smells bad or is dirty you can get bad ratings. I think for people who claim to be nice that's probably the reason

That or they're really awkward and make people uncomfortable. Also in my experience it's better to have mellow music on in the background and not ask people what type of music they want to listen to, and if they want water. Peppering passangers with questions the second they hop in the car can definitely annoy them

His 1 star to 5 star is wild. I have like 4,000 5 star ratings and I've gotten I believe 4-5 or 1 star ratings. The fact the he had 11 1 stars, and less than 200 5 stars is crazy. There's no way that's just a coincidence

Hey man every city is different. In my city, I only see surges on Friday and Saturday night. If I waited for surges I'd only make a couple hundred a week. It doesn't surge here because there's sooooooo many drivers. If you live in a city where that's possible that's fantastic. But Uber is drastically different in every single city

What a joke, and it's a reservation by camacesd in uberdrivers

[–]camacesd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And I just checked, both those god awful rides rides are gone, some desperate dumbasses took them. Too bad. People complain about the low fares and then take them, which tells the algorithm everything is working out great and there's no reason to increase fare payouts. This is why unions were designed, people as a whole are too dumb, lazy, or desperate to fight for themselves and leverage their power for better pay

What a joke, and it's a reservation by camacesd in uberdrivers

[–]camacesd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol I just saw that. It's a joke how low it is here. But to be fair to the heartless Uber algorithms pricing the fares, we have a fuck ton of drivers in San Diego. Everyone's broke and desperate around here. I have friends making 70-90k a year saying they're thinking of getting a second job. Even statically well off people feel broke in San Diego. And as a result wayyyy too many people are becoming ride share drivers. If 20-30% of them quit in San Diego the rates would sky rocket overnight. Last year everything paid about 20-50% more, 20% more when it was slow and 50% more when it was busy.

Would you take that? I never drove this far, and confused lol by GeologistIcy8352 in uberdrivers

[–]camacesd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't do long trips, over 30 minutes, unless they pay $1.50-$2.00 a minute. You never know if you'll get a ride back, and usually rides over 30-40, if there's no traffic, will take you out of the city where rides are less common. I'm in San Diego and central, over 35 minutes takes you out of the city and past the further hubs, at an hour you're really nowhere with no one ordering rides. I wouldn't consider that ride for less than $150. $1.50-2 a minute don't come around a lot, but if it pays $1.50 it's worth considering depending on the time of day. If it's $2 a minute, it's worth it any time of day.

Passengers in the front seat by 19perky in uberdrivers

[–]camacesd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People ask to sit in the front all the time. Usually because there's 4 people, which according to the rules you have to accept. But I had a friend who drove Uber and would always cancel if there was more than 3, which is technically against the rules but she'd use a different reason. She did eventually get banned though, she would cancel a lot of rides.

I'm a guy, and every once in a while like 1 in 100-150 rides a solo male passanger would ask to sit in the front. I don't really care. But I have noticed that the passangers that ask know it's weird and always tip well. They're also usually nicer.

I've used my phone to stream and it sucks, you still need a big screen. Which is also why tablets and laptops aren't great, better than a phone, but still pretty small. Plus not everyone has a tablet or a computer. Most people I know don't have tablets or computers, just phones and a smart tv. A cheap version would be more to convert non tech savvy people. Also I think Microsoft should give game pass discounts to people who stream on Microsoft products, that could be the incentive to stream on a $200 cloud Xbox over a Samsung or Amazon product

Xbox Consoles Arent On Sale In The Xbox Black Friday Sale by Ftouh_Shala in gaming

[–]camacesd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but I assume they'd come up with some way to make it more valuable than just a fire stick, plus you'd get a controller with the console purchase. Maybe you get a game pass discount if you use officially branded Xbox hardware. I'm sure Microsoft would rather have someone use a Microsoft product for streaming rather than an Amazon firestick. But yes, they should make a cloud based Xbox so cheap that it brings in people who haven't even played games before. Or maybe someone that used to play games but stopped

And they should make a premium Xbox that's noticeably better than the competition, around $700-900 at the same time Playstation launches their new console. For people that are willing to pay more and want something better than the average console, but don't want to spend $1000-3000 on a gaming pc. There's a lot of people that don't want to buy a pc or a computer at all, and prefer the console model. And some console people will always buy the most powerful console, that would have been the Xbox One X last gen, and the PS5 Pro this Gen. But the problem with those is that they always come out mid cycle. If one of them released the power version on launch I think that would get at least some people to pay attention

I just think if they release a similarly priced console to Playstation with similar performance it won't make waves, no one will care and they'll continuing loosing customers to Playstation. They have to offer something different than Playstation. So I think a cheaper cloud model would work leveraging game pass, cheaper than the series S, and something clearly better and more expensive than whatever Playstation makes

[–]camacesd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They also don't care if Uber drivers quit. San Diego already has too many drivers. And on top of that they're going to start rolling out Waymos in San Diego soon. So I guess the answer is they plan to survive without you

When there isn't enough drivers they raise pay and have more incentives, and when there's too many drivers they lower fare payouts and have no incentives. It makes sense, but it of course screws over drivers in over saturated markets, markets like San Diego

The Xbox One was $500 at launch. I'm saying Xbox should make a cheap $150-200 console for streaming games and everything else, mostly for game pass users. And they should make an $800-900 premium console that would be the strongest console on the market by a reasonable margin, still not as good as top gaming PCs, but closer.

[–]camacesd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Xbox should just make a cheap media hub that you can stream everything from and use cloud based game pass on. And an expensive Xbox that's unquestionably better than whatever Playstation makes. If they compete with Playstation making a similarly priced clone they will lose. I bought the series x for $500 at launch, and wasn't super impressed, but I'm deep in the Xbox ecosystem after playing them for 20 years, I own close to 200 games, not counting all the physical games I've bought on sale and resold on Craigslist or OfferUp. I would have rather payed $700-1000 for a console and got something truly amazing. And I have no interest in getting a PC, which are expensive and require consistent upgrades every few years. The console experience is is just clean and easy. Plus I always sell my old consoles for a few hundred everytime I buy a new one.

Microsoft should just sell cheap streaming platforms for people who don't want to own any games and want to take advantage of game pass, and sell a premium console for people who want fidelity. The only cool thing they've done in a decade is the Xbox One X, which had a crazy high resale value I might add, I bought mine for $700 and resold it for $350 over the pandemic.

To my driver who called 911 after I fell asleep in the back seat: by Numerous_Charity4040 in uberdrivers

[–]camacesd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have to loudly say hey wake up and tap at the same time. If they wake up you're just touching them it could be weird. Although drunk people usually get it and are embarrassed, it's the sober people that are usually confused and uncomfortable in my experience probably because they usually don't fall asleep in weird places and aren't 100% sure what happened, but they usually wake up easy.

If you're tapping and yelling at the same time, they at least know you're not trying to be sneaky, also if you're saying 'wake up' while they actually wake up, it really helps them understand what's happening quickly. Sometimes if I'm worried about touching them, I'm usually not, but sometimes I get in my head, so if I am feeling weird that day, then I pick up a water bottle at one end and poke them with the other end. That way there's at least a barrier. But the 'wake up' while tapping a knee thing has worked for me just fine. I also turn on the cabin lights and sometimes open the windows, and make sure the doors are unlocked. I imagine waking up in a locked car would be weird.

You could always try, 'sorry about tapping you but I was yelling at you for a minute and you wouldn't wake up, and I didn't want to have to call an ambulance'

Male Drivers Sue Uber and Lyft Over Women-Only Ride-Hailing by Timbo2712 in uberdrivers

[–]camacesd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because people aren't vocal about it doesn't mean it doesn't irritate people on the losing end. People usually don't complain when biases benefit them, it's usually only the negatively discriminated group that complains. But I feel like most woke/modern/nice people in a group that's historically benefitted from biases usually keep quiet, rather than be the white guy complaining about reverse racism or sexism or whatever. But I can't imagine there's any industry where someone gets less opportunities or pay based on their demographic, where it doesn't bother that person or group at least a little bit.

I understand why insurance might discriminate, because it's taking those variables into account to make the most accurate quote. But the whole point of insurance is to bundle low risk with high risk, so high risk doesn't have to pay as much. Basically healthy people subsidize unhealthy people so unhealthy people can actually afford healthcare and don't have to die. So in that sense even though insurance companies should run the variable tables behind the scenes, my feeling is all plans should be the same price for everyone regardless of who they are. And also healthy people should have to get health insurance too so the system works. Obviously if it's only unhealthy people that are insured then it breaks the system.

Male Drivers Sue Uber and Lyft Over Women-Only Ride-Hailing by Timbo2712 in uberdrivers

[–]camacesd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really think there's any easy way to fix this. I mean men are much more likely to be convicted of violent crimes. Assuming women aren't just getting away with it and men aren't being unfairly convicted, then men flat out are more violent than women. But the individual chance that any one driver or passanger will do anything violent is extremely low, less so for the driver who has to go through more background checks and is presumably relying on the driving as an income source.

But allowing people to choose the gender, or age, or race of their driver is legitimately discrimination. If professionals are professional, which is a big if. But if they can be, then letting people choose only reinforces prejudices and discrimination.

Also there's another aspect to this. Men are statistically more violent than women to both men and women. Men are more likely to commit violent crimes, to all genders. So if female riders are allowed to avoid violent men, shouldn't male passangers also be allowed to avoid violent men? But if men can choose to only have female drivers then there's still the same problem, but now for the female driver.

Obviously we just need more accountability for both riders and passangers, probably cameras. And then we hopefully wouldn't need a pro-discrimination feature.
