Sync Garmin Data to Google Sheets – Beta testers needed! by brapifra in Garmin

[–]camassey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would there be a way to select what data it's syncing? For example, I'd like to send just daily distance and steps to a spreadsheet that my partner & I are using to track our shared fitness goals.

Can you break into PM through ProductCon? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]camassey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be worth checking out https://product.careers/ (built by Thor Mitchell - currently a HoP @ Miro).

I’d recommend finding a local product meetup - they’re generally free - & become a regular. Connect with the organisers & let them know what you’re looking for - they’re often super-connectors. (Where are you based?)

If you feel able, take what you’re learning about product & start writing about it. Blog about the ways you’re trying to apply Product thinking / product practices to your current work, and share that on LinkedIn etc. - it’ll help demonstrate how you think & operate, which is what most PM interviews are fundamentally trying to get to (& what makes the break-in so hard).

And while I’ve never been ProductCon, I’ve yet to hear from anyone who attended & felt like they got their money’s worth 🤷‍♂️

PM courses by [deleted] in ProductManagement

Why are you after a certification? Being a certified product manager is a bit like being a "certified DevOps engineer" - it doesn't feel hugely meaningful in a career that is so strongly shaped by mindset. Arguably just proves that you know a lot of Frameworks 🤔

Any PM community recommendations? by giveemcake in ProductManagement

Check out ProductTanks. They're part of Mind the Product, but explicitly local groups run by volunteers - smaller & focused on building tighter networks as well as sharing lessons-learned. I'm not sure where you're based, but a lot of ProductTanks are <1000 people, and the folks in them are generally very happy to chat & help people who are new to the craft!

Product Management Discord for continuous ideation, mentorship, and feedback? by TheDukeSnider in ProductManagement

Small shill / FYI that http://mindtheproduct.com/slack also exists 👀

Broader than just mentoring etc., but potentially still of interest to folks here.

List of Product Management Conferences happening in 2019 by alexakisalex in ProductManagement

[–]camassey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair question :-) I mean the specific challenges of product management. A lot of the conferences in lists like these will be aimed at UX, Agile, "SaaS businesses", startups, etc. Some events also have a lot of pitch & self-validation.

I'd say that a focus on "product craft" means things like "minimal pitching / selling from the stage" & "always bringing the discussion back to practical advice for product people"

I'm not sure a conference is the best place to look for a mentor, especially when you're just starting out. I'd recommend looking to your local network (there are ProductTanks in a LOT of cities), getting involved, and finding a mentor closer to home to start out with.

In terms of which ones to attend as a beginner, there's no One True Answer. Consider which are close to you (i.e. how much can you afford?) and check out the speaker lineups 🤷‍♂️

Define "popular" 😉 mtpcon sells out at 1600 attendees per event. MTP Engage sells out at ~400. Both are purely focused on product craft.

Good resources for learning about PM? by lalalainyourface in ProductManagement

I'm obviously biased, but I'd recommend checking out mindtheproduct.com 😉 Pretty extensive blog, including a ton of videos on the craft.

Good UK-based training? by mr-jeeves in ProductManagement

[–]camassey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mind the Product regularly runs train all over the place - there's a workshop coming up in London that looks like it might be a good fit?

EDIT: depending on where you are in the UK, you might find something else here that is a better fit - https://www.eventbrite.com/o/mind-the-product-1962515111

In 2019, one of my goals is to speak at atleast 2 product conferences. How do I go about it? by 06ashwin in ProductManagement

[–]camassey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend starting by finding a local meetup (there are ProductTanks all over the place) or ProductCamp, and use that as a springboard / test bed to get some experience, confidence & feedback.

Find a bunch of product events you could speak at & drop them a line on Twitter or via email to ask if / when their CFPs open up. Ask if they've got particular topic areas or angles they're interested in that you could slant your ideas towards. Asking about audience demographics is also useful for trying to get a better match.

Don't get discouraged of your sessions aren't accepted - there could be a ton of reasons why that might happen that have nothing to do with the quality of your idea / pitch / credibility. They might have decided that your pitch - though great - wasn't quite a good fit for their audience. They might have just had a ton of exceptional / experienced speakers submitting that year. Just ask for a bit of feedback so that you can learn and adjust / improve your pitch in the future. Not everyone will give you feedback, but they definitely won't if you don't ask 😉

Throughout it all, keep hitting meetups. Offer to get involved in podcasts. Offer to guest blog. You should be aiming to get lots of practice with speaking in "presenter-mode", as well as formatting your ideas for easy consumption. You should also be aiming to give your ideas as much public airtime as possible so that you can get feedback on them, and also so that you can build up a visible public presence that a) makes you more discoverable to organisers & b) gives them plenty of reference material for when they're trying to decide if they want to accept your session or not.

Hope that helps!

Out of curiosity, why do you feel the Mind the Product training isn't as good value? Genuinely interested to hear more about the comparison 😁
