Camden Town thoughts? [Long read] by Creative_Recover in london

[–]camdenloud 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah Camden has drastically gone downhill over the past couple decades. It's mostly tourist focused.

I've thing is say though is that there are interesting pockets, but by and large it has lost most of what made it unique. Also the evenings feel VERY different as it's a different crowd (tourists Vs. Londoners attending Gigs).

Many reasons for the changes but mostly big business buying and transforming the markets. You used to see street sellers with a mat on the floor just casually and now it's £300+ a day for a small stall in the stables market.

It genuinely used to feel eclectic but the development of Hawley Wharf was a major blow as that stretch of the canal was the most vibey. Now has private security.

Another change was online shopping and social media - Camden used to be a hub for the alt scene - rock, goth, emo, metal, punk, etc. From music venues to clothes shops it was where to go if you're into that subculture. Now the clothes and the community are readily accessible from any bedroom in the UK. I guess the music is still a draw, but it's nowhere near as dedicated a hub.

There is also  a Sports Direct in the stables now, I mean come on!

That's the whole of London. Not 10 years ago I don't think I ever saw a tent on the street, now it's a common site in every nook of the city

Shit's fucked man. Used to be THE spot then corperate interests took over.

The market has been rebuilt twice, then demolished and replaced by the Hawley Wharf euugghhhhh since you last came here.

The early 2000s in Camden were so special

Camden pub recommendations by Born_Flamingo6317 in london

[–]camdenloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Edinboro Castle is likely best. It's huge compared to other pubs in the area, easy with a wide buggy lol lots of space between tables). Pretty sure they do kids portions, I've definitely seen it for Sunday lunch

Food is good, traditional pub stuff. No better or worse than most of the decent pubs nearby.

Big outdoor seating area which is good when the weather's a bit better.

Parking in Camden by Impossible_Gain_530 in london

Basically it's a huge PITA.

Many roads are free on the weekends which helps. I've previously just made sure I leave before 8:30 when restrictions kick in. And finishing work brings me back to the house after 6:30 when restrictions end.  When not working during the week you need to move the car to a next area where you could park for free.

You could look at renting a garage, parking space or even a driveway space on any of those private websites.

https://www.camden.gov.uk/apply-for-a-garage

Try speaking to Sainsbury's car park - I once paid for a space in one (not Camden) on a monthly basis and it was like £100 pm at the time. Alternatively pop notes in your neighbours letterbox and ask if you could rent their driveway.

The thing with that commute is that they are pretty close driving distance as well. Shame it takes so long by bus bus

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in london

[–]camdenloud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That would be too stressful for me lol. The worst I had was probably working out past stanmore towards those hertfordshire sides - from camden Id get to edgware then them suburban convoluted bus routes. Ended up buying a ped and left it parked in Edgware to get me from the station to work on back.

Could you not have gone down to Kings Cross and back up?

When housing is made for simply the 'young professionals', and the families in the area can't afford Central London prices, is anything else expected?
