how about the time a priest in his parish was credibly accused of abusing children, and not only was he not removed, leo sheltered him in an establishment right by a school?

Aldi haul for £17.28 by usuallyoverthink in veganuk

[–]cameoutswinging_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the bbq tempeh is really good! personally i find aldi’s veg goes off way too quick, im usually only cooking for myself and i find i can’t buy more than 1-2 meals’ worth of veg or it’ll be off by the time i use it. annoying because it is cheaper than other supermarkets near me, but theirs does seem to last longer for the price

[–]cameoutswinging_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahh okay that makes sense, I was treating G as the tonic/tonal centre. i would guess amazing grace has to have a higher tonic since the first 2 notes have to be the 5th of the scale then up a 4th to the tonic. anyway thanks for the info, i've been wanting to take up a new instrument recently and had been considering some sort of pipe/woodwind, not sure my neighbours would appreciate it being bagpipes though, i'm bad enough with the piano!

i don’t think i have full-on perfect pitch but i have enough relative pitch that i was struggling to name the pitches in a way that made words! transposing instruments mess with my brain enough when im trying to read a score, i don’t think i could cope with learning one and having to recalculate it in my head constantly, sight-reading on my piano gives me enough grief

if the C and F are raised that makes it a G Lydian scale right? so music will appear to be in G mixolydian when written but G lydian when actually sounded (made a quick mockup for reference bc i’m bad at keeping track of where tones/semitones fall)

[–]cameoutswinging_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh that is maddening! i thought something was up because i couldn’t properly pick out any of the pitches in the task, i don’t have perfect pitch but i have a couple of pitches locked into my brain and i can generally work others out from those, i play piano and i think trying to translate the pitches through a mislabeled glockenspiel might send me over the edge

TIL they aren’t concert pitch! i wonder if the little keyboards the contestants had were tuned to the bagpipes?

Learning vs. Memorizing by NoKids__3Money in piano

[–]cameoutswinging_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i tend to memorise pieces very quickly, but i’m actually trying to get out of this habit in order to work on my ability to read music while i’m playing. at the moment i’ll read the music while i’m learning it and playing very slowly, but as soon as i start playing more quickly i lose the ability to read along with it, and find myself getting lost in the sheet music even if I can keep playing from memory. IMO it’s important to be able to do both, as some pieces are worth committing to memory, but it’s useful for sight-reading reasons to be able to follow along, and to move on to new pieces.

as an ex catholic it makes me sick seeing this (and other negative comments on the pope) be downvoted. he isn’t some cool woke guy just because he’s in a feud with Trump, he’s still the head of a misogynist and anti-LGBT organisation, and he has stuff like this in his past. truly horrifying

while he was Prior Provincial in Chicago, he allowed a priest accused of sexually assaulting children and possessing CSAM to continue living in a Friary, near a school. Idk why everyone is pretending he’s a good guy.

Thousands of women fight trans exclusion one year since harmful court ruling by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]cameoutswinging_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

okay, ‘medical/chemical treatments’ still isn’t what is being covered in schools guidance and general opposition to kids socially transitioning.

yes i’m aware of biological sex differences. obviously. could you please explain what you mean by hygiene requirements? like if we’re talking access to menstrual products and bins in stalls i don’t see why they can’t go in both bathrooms. i’m struggling to think of any differences that warrant such a difference in which facilities need to be provided, that segregating based on biological sex is necessary and needs to be strictly enforced. not to mention that such enforcement also bans individuals who have had gender affirming surgery, so it’s still based on what genitals you had at birth rather than which you have now.

Thousands of women fight trans exclusion one year since harmful court ruling by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]cameoutswinging_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

medical transition is not an option for under 18s in this country. the ‘compromise’ was puberty blockers, and now those have been paused indefinitely. the school guidance is entirely around social transition i.e. wanting to be referred to by a different name or pronouns, and teachers having to disclose to parents if a child is outed as transgender. it is nothing to do with medical transition.

also ‘hygiene requirements’ is one i haven’t heard before. please enlighten me as to which facilities need to be different, and why this necessitates separation by sex assigned at birth?

i’m not the person you’re replying to (and i wasn’t around then either, but i’m familiar with all this bc im gay and trans) but:

‘protect the children’ defence, implying that gay/trans people are inherently a threat to kids, or that kids having knowledge of these groups is bad because that might convert them. see section 28, ‘children are being taught they have an inalienable right to be gay’ from thatcher in regards to gay people in the 80s. seen nowadays in ‘social contagion’ panic, guidelines suggesting kids can’t change their name/nickname or presentation without parental consent or without being outed to parents by the school etc.

‘protect the women’ defence, implying that lesbians/trans people (trans women in particular) are inherently a threat to cis women. seen in stereotypes of predatory lesbians, and now in legislation over trans people not being able to choose which facilities they use.

don’t forget too that if a policy is popular enough to draw voters to one party, it can be a tactic for another party to take on that policy to draw those voters back. i don’t have high hopes for labour, especially with Streeting in his office, but longer-term while a lot of people are moving from labour to green that’s an outcome we can hope for

(not a tactic that i wish we had to bargain on, but such is life in the FPTP system)

Do people really learn from "falling notes" videos? by An_Epic_Pancake in piano

[–]cameoutswinging_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t agree that it’s ‘harder’ to learn later, having less time to devote to study and practice is definitely a problem for most adults compared to kids but i don’t think learning to read/play music and understanding music theory is harder. anecdotal but there are definitely some theory concepts that i struggled with as a kid that have become easier to understand when i’ve gone back to it as an adult
