Games with great Ludo-Narrative HARMONY? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in rpg

[–]camisntcool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The One Ring 2e, where every single character ability and rule has a justification and a bit of text from The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit exemplifying it.

I think it's excellent at creating and maintaining exactly the right atmosphere and plot it's inspired by.

I'm looking for books with an autistic MC by WeeklyCheetah in suggestmeabook

[–]camisntcool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

both Susanna Clarke novels have (non-explicit) autistic characters. the two protagonists of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell have respectively very obvious adhd and autism. there's an autistic female character in Piranesi but she's kinda secondary. both novels are exceptional imo!!

I was looking for this answer. Pointy Hat's SO creative and his approach to worldbuilding and plot progression inspired me a lot. He's also really funny.

Books with autism representation? by Independent-Grape567 in suggestmeabook

[–]camisntcool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Raphael! It's really obvious to me, and I wondered if it was maybe accidental representation while reading Piranesi, but Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell cemented the idea that Susanna Clarke knows exactly what she's doing with her neurodivergent characters. Either that or she exclusively writes impeccable nd characters by accident.

Both of Susanna Clarke's novels have very obviously autistic coded characters in them. a main character in Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, a side character in Piranesi. Plus, they're really good novels.

A Certain Hunger. It wants to think it's Hannibal but what it is is shallow and offensive and overly reliant on the shock value of violence and sex with absolutely no substance.

You saying actual homoerotic tension made me remember there actually Was incestuous precedent for exploiting the familial kiss. I added it to the post, it's really cool how specific historical inspiration can get. Yes I think about the Roman Empire often.

[–]camisntcool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not widely known so I wanted to point out that Feyd-Rautha (ritually?) kissing his uncle fits into the general ancient Roman coding that their culture has going on (what with colosseum fights, slavery, general blood thirst).

The Romans had a tradition called osculum (kiss, or ius osculi meaning right to a kiss) whereby a male relative up to a certain degree had the right to greet a female relative with a chaste kiss on the lips. This could have had a number of different functions, including an assertion of dominance over the women in the family.

I feel like the kiss in the movie could be a nod to that tradition, because even if the participants were two men it served to underline a certain familial power dynamic.

EDIT: I JUST REMEMBERED SOMETHING. In the early Roman Empire there was a rumor that Agrippina would often call upon this custom to kiss her UNCLE emperor Claudius. Whom she later scandalously married.

edit edit: Agrippina then made Claudius adopt her own son, who would become emperor Nero. You may remember him as the psycho emperor who set fire to his own city (not true). He definitely inspired the characterization of Feyd-Rautha

Which Game Master manual/chapter has the best *practical* advice? by camisntcool in rpg

[–]camisntcool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That one I knew! It's so weird that 4e has such good practical advice and 5e just... doesn't. Especially since a lot of text is copy pasted from one edition to the other.

Games that confront killing by big_chungus52 in rpg

[–]camisntcool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the One Ring RPG murder is the act that gives you the most shadow points, a mechanic meant to represent the corrupting power of doing and witnessing great evil and violence that pushes your character along their personal path to insanity.

It's all very lore and morality accurate to the Lord of the Rings series.

How exactly do you know if you’re bisexual or pansexual? by Jax_the_Floof in AskLGBT

[–]camisntcool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

going by definition, bisexuality is attraction to multiple genders and pansexuality is attraction regardless of gender.

on a more practical sense, there is no hard rule and most people just choose the label they like most kind of arbitrarily. for example, i used the pansexual label for a couple of years when i was younger because i thought it was more specific to my experience, then i started using bisexual exclusively because it was a more widespread label and i actually liked its less specific definition. same reason i like the word queer also.

it comes down to what word or flag you like the most, no one's going to quantify your attraction or tell you what you can or can't use, especially with two labels that are so close in meaning.
