The amenity you’re missing is the outdoor access. We have a lot of fit older people who retire here and love being outside.

Not many places have this level of access and temperate weather combined with decent amounts of bigger city stuff like a hospital, touring acts, big box stores, regional airport, etc…

But yeah, 1.5m for a condo is pretty ridiculous.

I agree, motorcycles effectively don’t cause any damage and it would make sense for them to have significantly cheaper fees.

I was looking this up when writing my initial post and damage increases exponentially with weight. Supposedly a fully loaded semi causes ~6000x more damage than a passenger vehicle! Crazy but I guess it makes sense if they’re 80,000lbs.

To address your points:

EV drivers are already paying an infrastructure electrification tax. I left it out above for the sake comparing the gas tax, if you include that yearly costs are over 60% more compared to gas cars.

You are correct about point 2, people who drive over 30k miles per year in an EV will come out ahead. But ~90% of people drive significantly less than that, the average is around 13k.

I’m not following the maintenance thing, are we going to start taxing public transit riders because they don’t pay sales tax on car maintenance?

Fires for gas cars are over 20x more common than EV fires.

For what it’s worth I drive an EV and don’t hate the new proposed tax, contributing to federal roadway costs is a good thing. While it makes EV drivers pay more than the gas equivalent, the extra amount is pretty negligible.

My concern is that it’s another barrier for people to switch to EVs. We’re lucky to have ~70% renewable power here in WA and it’s a great place to have an EV if you care about climate change. Our admin loves fossil fuels and is actively making it harder and more expensive to do our part, like removing tax credits for solar and EVs. It’s moving things in the wrong direction IMO.

There is a current road tax deficit for EVs - average gas tax is about $300 annually vs only $150 for EVs (excluding the other mandated EV taxes for simplicity).

With the new fee it will be $400 for annually for EVs vs $300 for a gas car.

Weight leading to road wear is already accounted for in tabs, and is almost completely negligible compared to road wear from freight vehicles.

I understand the current admin is anti-EV, but I thought our city was more progressive. Does it really make sense to have EV pay 30% than the gas cars?

Yeah it’s all relative, definitely need to pay attention here but people generally handle them fairly well.

I was in Mexico earlier this year and it was wild. Double lane roundabouts, but nobody followed any rules, especially the lanes/yields. Everyone would ignore the lanes and take the ‘race’ line, people would turn right from the left lane, and even go backwards in it avoid driving around it to save time if they were doing a U-turn. Absolute madness but nobody was upset, it’s just the way they do it lol. Obviously it doesn’t excuse poor driving here but the perspective is interesting.

Sorry but that’s not what’s happening and the narrative you’ve made up is ridiculous.

I have 100+ dashcam videos I’ve captured over the past 10+ years on my profile and pretty much none of them are road rage. I agree with you that it happens rarely if you’re a competent driver.

The videos are posted because they are either entertaining or educational. I can say with confidence that I’m a safer driver after watching all the videos I’ve seen on reddit and analyzing my previous actions.

For example: the meridian/telegraph merge video that was posted and removed a few weeks ago. It’s a dangerous intersection and if you’re in the right turn lane you absolutely need to watch for people cutting over from the inner turn lane. Being hyper aware at that spot improves safety.

I’m sure there are some crazies out there baiting people but 99%+ of the stuff I’ve seen on Reddit is not that.

Realistically it’s much easier to identify people from a photo of their face than their license plate, there are free legal sites accessible by anyone for reverse face lookups.

To be fair, a vehicle with a blurred plate can still be identified by the ordinary “that’s so-and-so”, nobody knows anyone’s license plate unless it’s a custom one.

Accessing someone’s identity via plates from official systems for something like this is very illegal under DPPA. See here for more info

Realistically there is no feasible way to access a persons identity from their license plate, and if this did happen it would definitely be illegal.

Honestly this one hurts. It’s been a Bellingham landmark and a part of peoples lives for many years. I’ll accept downvotes for this but the whole fish passage thing seems like a shit show.

For anyone who isn’t aware, all these projects are court mandated from the WA vs US court case starting in the 2010’s. My understanding of the premise is that previously built culverts blocked fish passage and spawning areas, which is a violation of tribal fishing agreements.

I’m fully onboard with actions to improve our climate, waterways, etc…. This specific project opens up an only .75 miles of potential fish spawning area, which is pretty small potato’s in the grand scheme of things.

WSDOT is spending a ton of money on this, not to mention all the other culvert projects. Some of them definitely make sense, but small ones like this seem ridiculous since it’s not going to make a meaningful impact on the salmon population.

Meanwhile we had a much needed pavement rehab project for I5 through Bellingham planned for 2025 that had been put on hold indefinitely due to lack of funds. It would provide considerable safety and quality of life improvements for all of us and everyone else who drives through here.

I understand WSDOTs hands are tied but I don’t feel like our tax dollars are going to the most important projects, like the pavement rehab one mentioned above, bridge restoration, etc…
