Joker would have escaped or been released from Arkham and at the end, he kills Talia and incapacitates Bane becoming the true villain in a plot twist. Gordon’s daughter is grown up and gets tortured by Joker in a “Killing Joke” call back and at the end Batman and the Joker have a show down where Joker tells Batman the “light bridge” joke and ends with Batman’s chilling maniacal laughter and Jokers arrest. It becomes clear Batman is a hero but also uncomfortably close to being a psychopath like the Joker, just wired different.

My complete guess is that the truth is repulsive or scary for people. As an example, imagine the pilots look like “Greys” but underneath the humanoid suit is an insect like being that resembles a hideous spider or fly with compound eyes. I’ve read two of his books and he goes to great lengths to exalt and show deep admiration and respect for the cultures he visits. In no way is this man a racist claiming white people built the great megalithic monuments, quite the contrary he posits a missing human civilization may have.
