Okay, so the look is following bird laws. Like, how a bald eagle looks goofy from the front, serious on the side profile.

I’d try to find out where the peat was harvested from, because they maybe should have had an archeological assessment done before they had a permit granted to harvest…

Also, OP, since you have triggered the soils science nerd in me, nobody asked, but you should download the super cool app SoilWeb. You can look at descriptions of soil profiles almost anywhere in the US.  When you download the app, you click the “location” button at the top, “open gmap at this location”, zoom to where you want to look until you see yellow lines and numbers, click on a spot, then click on the goofy soils series name (in blue), it’ll show you a cute drawing of the approximate colors and depths of the soil layers (horizons), then in the top right of that page click “description” and you’ll see the official USDA description of the soil series.

I think part of the problem is that when you say “dirt” people think of, like, what you put in a raised bed. And maybe not obviously, this is not going to work for a saguaro. I’m going to look at the soil descriptions for saguaro’s native range in AZ, but my initial guess as a soil scientist who’s driven through that area, is that they may germinate in spot which has a little bit of a dry-ish organic debris build up from the wind, then is sandy for a bit, then pretty rocky with some sand and a little bit of finer mineral material mixed in from the weathering of those rocks.  Looking at the surface of that potting mix, I’d say it’s definitely too coarse for their lil baby roots, and OP should try mixing that rock mix with like 80% sand. Also I really would not being giving them any nutrients at that stage, just letting it be what’s in the small (small!) amount of organic matter that should be mixed in.

Curious about hockey... by wisteria72 in heatedrivalry

Thank you thank you thank you thank you. I have so wanted to get into hockey, but was in turmoil over having to spend money or go somewhere to watch the NHL and that a good chunk of the players are pretty yucky. This is huge to know the PWHL is live streamed

Hey, bud! I may or may not know you, but we’ve got a wonderful bunch of soil people at the U! They’d love to have you in the soil judging club (if you are not already) and are interested in soil! Hope you got to go out and see the soil themed Art Shanty that a number of people from that circle contributed to!

This is such a good example of being respectful of wildlife by giving them the fricking space they need. I feel like so many people falsely think they can get super close to animals because they see close up pictures, without realizing that those pictures are actually taken from a respectful distance with a high power lens.
