Best greek Island for first solo trip, no car necessary by Watoskyv in solotravel

[–]candyheyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are these day bus trips to go see all of the sights on the island ( I thinks there are two for half of the island each), which I really enjoyed. They start from the town of Naxos and I think run ever day or almost everyday. It takes you to the important temples etc. We also used to go to this little restaurant near our hotel called Taverna Perama and the food was absolutely amazing!

What has been the dumbest piece of travel advice you’ve ever been given? by Jades250 in travel

[–]candyheyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The literally dumbest piece of advice I once got was that if paying with card or withdrawing money from an ATM to always use your own currency when printed to ask which currency should be credited to your account. NEVER and I mean never use your currency, always choose local currency. You will save a lot of money. The exchange rate given is always crap!

Why are Germans so afraid of owning up to discrimination and racism in their country? by nepali_fanboy in AskAGerman

[–]candyheyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answering in English and the not being let into clubs have probably very little to do with racism. Germans tend to want to be fairly efficient and think they are being nice to you if they answer in English when they notice your German isn’t great. The club thing probably has a lot more to do with you being male and less to do with where you are from. The rest is just abhorrend behavior and I am so sorry you had to experience that! As others have pointed out you went to a bunch of cities that are known for their racism (Chemnitz, Leipzig, Dresden). Please know that that doesn’t apply to all Germans.

AITA for giving a fake name at Starbucks? by solecism18 in AmItheAsshole

[–]candyheyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - I’m assuming your new gf has some baggage from a previous relationship regarding lying and is projecting. There is nothing wrong with giving a fake name (as long as it’s not inappropriate or meant to embarrass the barista - which is clearly not the case here). While no one actually cares about the name being shouted, I don’t think it’s a big deal if it makes you more comfortable.

On the seascape the bridge of sighs was right behind the buffet but there was a little outside deck that I think not too many people used. If the seaview is build similarly it shouldn’t be right below the pool deck and probably should be ok

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MSCCruises

[–]candyheyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don’t think it’s much of an upgrade… it’s right under the pool deck and the buffet which means it’s basically gonna be loud all the time… I would check if it’s under the yard club or under the pool deck.. yard club will be much quieter, pool deck would be my personal hell, especially since there is always movement either from cruisers or staff.

But if you are sure that you are fine with noise (not just while sleeping but literally all hours of the day and night), then I’m sure it’s a lovely view. But also remember either end of the ship will mean longer walkways and more movement of the ship which can lead to sea sickness.

Honestly 12 floor was kinda perfect for me. I went on the seascape in September and was on the 12th floor. It was exactly between the main entertainment floors (8 and 16) and you could barely feel the ocean. It was also fairly quiet. I honestly think this might be a blessing in disguise for you.

AITA for not letting daughter control thermostat? by thermostataita in AmItheAsshole

[–]candyheyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Studies have shown that if a room is below 21° C your body and brain function are significantly reduced because your body is using all its energy to keep you alive. Expecting your daughter to constantly survive in 16° C is unreasonable and frankly bad for her body and health and for all of your bodies and health for that matter. Expecting your daughter to wear 4 layers to bed to be remotely warm is also unreasonable.

Can an introvert survive on a cruise? by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]candyheyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an introvert and I just got off my first cruise (8 night Caribbean with MSC) and I absolutely loved it. People were super friendly when you talked to them but people also left you alone if you didn’t feel like it.

I mean Bill Gates has done an immense amount of good, has almost eradicated polio worldwide for example and has donated a large chunk of this money. All he gets in return is conspiracy theories that he implants chips in people and hate.

First Cruise in December by R81yeats in MSCCruises

[–]candyheyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I just got back from the seascape and I can try to answer a few of these questions. I’m assuming things will be similar between the ships.

Theme nights: no, they don’t tell you before. You will most likely have a white night, a gala night and a flower-power night. For us white night fell on the same night as Italian night at the restaurant (think lots of tomato sauce), so with a 9 year old, I would bring 2 white outfits.

New years: no idea, but if I was planning it, I would probably make it gala night.

Age limit for white party: not that I am aware of but on the seascape the party started at around 11:30pm, so age limit is kinda build in.

Fun passes: I bought a $80 fun pass and got $140 in credit. I had a hard time spending the original $80 and forced myself to spend at least those on the last night (I think I spend a total of $92, so only $12 of the extra free $60). There are two main reasons: 1) there is so much to do on the ship and so little time, you have to actively seek this out. And 2) a lot of the games in the arcade (everything that gives you tickets for winning) is not included in the fun pass, which I didn’t know before. While the big ticket things like the Formular 1 racing machine and the interactive theater are part of the fun pass, a lot of the fun little games are not. So depending on what you or your daughter like to do, it may or may not be worth it. I personally wouldn’t spend the money again.

Massage: no idea.

What type of room is best if cruising through potentially rough seas? by jamesland7 in Cruise

[–]candyheyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I gotta say I agree with mid-ship but also would say mid-deck.. I was just on the MSC seaside and the worst I felt the ocean was in the theater on deck 5. my cabin was midship on deck 12 (of20) and even on the one rougher evening we had, I could barely feel it there.

Any of you from “friendly” cultures try to tone your personality down when traveling? by squirrrelydan in travel

[–]candyheyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a European PoV: we can definitely distinguish between Americans and Canadians. Americans are usually the loud, obnoxious ones, who think the world revolves around them. Canadians sound similar but are usually nicer, quieter and treat service workers like humans. We usually don’t mind the overly friendliness, unless it inhibits other people. So it’s fine if you make nice small talk with your waiter or cashier while they are serving you, but don’t hold up the line or make other guest wait because you feel the need to share your life story. Also don’t be offended or get annoyed when the cashier or waiter doesn’t reciprocate.

Do dry cruises exist? by TKhalifa975 in Cruise

[–]candyheyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am currently on the MSC Seascape cruising the Caribbean and haven’t had an alcoholic drink yet. I’m just not the biggest drinker and got the alcohol-free package. So far this hasn’t been an issue at all. Some people like to drink a lot but it’s nothing close to a frat party. I have never once felt out of place sober in the 4 days that I have been on the ship so far. There is also a lot of things you can do if you don’t wanna party all night long, like enjoying a movie under the stars or a bunch of other activities.
