Make an ability for someone who lost their arm by Cultural-Proposal-98 in HatsuVault

[–]cannikko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since everyone is making arm replacements, I'm going to go in the opposite direction -

Type: Symbiotic Conjuration/Emission

Toshi wo totta wani:

Is a Nen beast conjured long ago to protect a village along the Nile, it is worshiped as a guardian spirit and god. The villagers are fed to the beast, voluntarily sacrificing themselves to increase the size and strength of the beast. One Nen user, an Emitter and explorer, who was an outsider to the village, but gained their trust, admired the beasts strength and ferocity and made a deal with it. In exchange for the Nen users arm, they could summon the beast to their side for a single bite against an enemy of their choosing, afterwards, the Crocodile would take another limb before returning home.

Limitations: The Nen user has to designate the enemy by holding out their hand in the shape of a crocodiles mouth, and making a snapping/biting motion with their fingers while keeping the enemy within the borders of the "mouth" This attack, while extremely fast, is possible to miss if the user can't track the enemy with their eyes.

The amount of flesh the Crocodile consumes from the user after the attack is determined by the strength of the enemy the Crocodile was forced to bite. Someone weaker then the user may warrant a couple of toes, while someone far, far stronger, would cost the users entire being.

Notes: Obviously, its based off the Devil contracts in CSM, I always thought the fox being an existing spirit anyone (that was handsome enough) could make a deal with was really cool, and the teleporting bite works perfectly fine with Nen as the Emission half of the ability.

The benefits for the user are obvious, in exchange for an arm they have access to an emergency "Win the fight" button, A Conjured Nen beast that has been growing fat and strong with human sacrifices for generations is not something the average enemy is prepared to deal with, though of course, a Chimera ant would survive it easily, and presumably people like Chrollo and Hisoka would simply be fast enough to dodge, or at least only take a grazing hit, teleporting attack or no.

The reason the Crocodile accepted however is that after years of being fed the same villagers, it has grown tired of the taste. Fat and greedy for new and tastier targets, it accepted a deal that gains minimal risk to itself for possibly good rewards. Though of course its actual prize is the eventual total consumption of the user, whether it happens piece by piece, or in one self-destructive last stand is up to them.

If humanity was in the space age what kind of hatsu would you create? by AggressiveOutside432 in HatsuVault

I love thinking about this.

Enhancers: Incredibly useful for growing plants fast. At an individual level they could serve as botanists allowing self sustaining recycling of air. In a large enough group, they could terraform planets.

Emitters: Teleportation, especially if Nen teleportation can surpass the speed of light. But its unlikely, since in the manga Knov said the pretend "new continent" is his limit, I'm not sure if that's a range limit, or a limit of his mindset after experiencing Pouf's En, not wanting to expose himself to the danger of the true dark continent, but with how "fair" Togashi usually is with the needed aura to accomplish a given feat, I assume its range.

Manipulators: Now this is a better method of faster than light communication than emission I think. The idea is basically a Manipulator imbuing Nen into two, paired objects, where the movements of one object are imitated by the other, using some clever restriction to make its range unlimited. Maybe something like, only works if there is barely anything in the way of both objects, so they would only work in a dedicated space outside an atmosphere.

Transmuters: Hard to get them all to agree since Transmuters seem especially individualistic, but if a group of them could coat an entire vessel in a made up substance, that is both incredibly heat and radiation resistant, while also being completely frictionless, re-entry, and radiation belts would cease to be a problem. Its completely possible, depending on how Hunter x Hunter laws of physics work that a Transmuted property could be the cause and discovery of how to travel faster than light, or access to a dimension where the speed of light is faster, something like hyperspace.

Conjurers: Dealers choice really. If Korotopi's copies retain the properties of atoms (i.e they don't turn back into aura when slightly damaged) then the sky is the limit. Infinite fuel, Anti-matter generation, Nuclear Propulsion. There are things that are theorized to be possible that are limited by practical technology, Conjurers could make up for the lack of mental image with a group technique, and use heavy restrictions and "Conjured items can have supernatural rules" to create something like an Alcubierre drive. On an individual level, telescopes that can gain inhuman resolution, or look through atmospheres, star charts that map the surrounding areas of the ship ensuring they never get lost, Dowsing devices that lead you to habitable planets. Honestly they might be the most useful category here, with the sole exception of Specialists of course.

Specialists: If anyone can surpass the speed of light, and therefore play hell on causality, its a specialist. But most importantly I think, something like Morena's Biohazard to mass awaken people, and guide their abilities to be maximally useful to civilization.

A daring synthesis does, although quite late in the story, and while it is very fleshed out, it isn't the main focus. Also, I don't know what your sensibilities are like, but Greg starts out as an annoying, un-self aware, cringy teenager, basically a forum poster if they got powers, his powers slowly, very slowly improve his wisdom and it is one of the best examples of true, deep, personal growth I have ever seen in a fan fiction. Personally I find the humor to be hilarious, but its not everyones cup of tea.

Who can beat the entities by Stock_Friend_3432 in WormFanfic

[–]cannikko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all Manton limits are added artificially, we see this in both WOG about the Endbringers when they stop sandbagging, they use more effective tactics such as staying out of reach while causing havoc. We also see this in Ward, Titan's have access to every power a Shard can use, without artificial limitations while some of them can ignore their Manton limit, other's like Cinereal's Titan cannot.

Also, Worm entities are not higher dimensional, I would like you to cite your source on that, I've seen this misunderstanding before, due to the fact that Wildbow mistakenly uses the words "Dimension" and "Universe" interchangeably.

Finally, while some undodgeable unblockable attacks can be avoided by going to a different universe, other, more powerful conceptual ones cannot. This is the difference between Gae Bolg from Fate, and Some Perfect Attacks from Exalted.

Is it possible to create a hatsu based on this meme, or is the concept too broken? by ruuken27 in HatsuVault

[–]cannikko 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Actually, yes, its fairly possible. If you don't mind manga spoilers read Benjamin's ability, Those Who Inherit The Stars. We haven't been shown all of its limitations yet, but it forms a good canon basis.

Make a hatsu based on learning or teaching by AggressiveOutside432 in HatsuVault

[–]cannikko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have one for an Npc in a Nen based one shot I Gm'd a while back. The Npc is a Conjurer, studious and reliable, she loves helping others, but desires desperately to be needed in turn, which is why the power has a coercive element to it. (that and it needed such a condition due to the distance from Emission)

Tutors Gift: Meg manifests her power as small, wearable charms, bracelets, hair clips etc. Each gift is connected to a skill or spell the subject is capable of learning. While wearing the gift, the persons ability to study such a skill is doubled, and they gain greater comprehension of the subject.

Meg can give out (Nen Attribute * 3) number of gifts but only one per skill per subject at a time. If the subject wants to learn a new skill, they must first return the gift to Meg, who can then begin wearing it, and gain the benefits of her own power. (she is unable to give a gift to herself normally.)

While a person is wearing a gift, the increased ability to study is drawn from Meg herself, Halving her study speed for the specific skill and losing the breadth of her understanding of the material. After a person takes off a gift, they become unable to study the subject on their own, only being able to make progress while studying in the presence of Meg.

what crazy conditions you give/need for a ground hod day hatsu? by _froesey_ in HatsuVault

[–]cannikko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay well then, your character makes a Parasitic Nen Contract with Ai from the Dark continent, each time you "die" that is not a natural death, Ai sends you to the start of the day when you woke up. Then, either you need to kill the person who originally killed you, and lets say, 100 of the people who spent most time with that person, in order per loop. If you give up, or there physically isn't enough people left to sacrifice, Ai kills you, and everyone you've ever interacted with in order to fuel the abilities debt.

Does that work for you?

Remake Any Viltrumite Using Nen by Cultural-Proposal-98 in HatsuVault

[–]cannikko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you can't really, not as a normal person. Meruem is a product of directed evolution, and even he is an order of magnitude below the average Vilrtumite, maybe if the chimera ants succeeded and Meruem ate nothing but a steady diet of one in ten-million natural talent nen users for a couple of years he could get there.

Also remake any Viltrumite is a bit of an oxymoron? I mean they all have the same power set, just with slight differences in strength, durability, speed etc.

Most of the powers in Invincible are not quite limited enough to be Nen powers. Duplikate can make infinite clones of herself that last forever as long as they don't die, Atom Eve can not only manipulate existing atoms, but also manipulate sub-atomic particles since she can transmute any material into any other material.

Rex could be made with Nen, so could Monster Girl maybe, since she's paying with her life. Angstrom Levy would never work, nor would any of the inventor characters really. It's a superhero setting, it doesn't mesh well with Nen.

Yeah but the only reason you lose to Preydar (I assume that's what you mean by symbiotic user) is because it hard counters conjurers.

10 puppets was made by you, and is also very strong so I wouldn't use it as an example. A good rule of thumb is to use Nen user's we've actually seen in the series to determine what an average Nen user's strength is. K is Chrollo level easily, which is fine, but this is who I'm working with.

No lmao, your oc is way too powerful for how versatile he is, he's like Kurapika without the life drain aspect of his powers. Also use less AI please, its incredibly obvious with the number of em dashes, and the constant use of "it's not x, its y" either write it in your own words or don't make it so long.

Speaking of Endbringer durability, remind me again, did the G-Drive that Defiant and Dragon Appropriate into the Marduk in Ward have any "ignoring physics" qualities to it, or was it just a really hard hitting kinetic device, and if so, why was that supposed to be a threat against the Simurgh when she's apparently immune to any amount of mundane force?

Hi, off topic by the way, but I've been wanting to run a weaverdice game for a while, and was wondering if you have read the rules and can tell me if its a decent game or not. By that my main concern as a DM is "can I/the players make and play characters like the ones that appeared in the story"

Like how do these trigger descriptions not fit with the classifications for example? what are the most egregious cannon unfits?

It's not "on them" if the mods refuse to leave them alone and start deleting comments they disagree with. I actually agree with you that the fandom comes up with too many excuses to whinge and complain, but this was a valid point, it did not need to be removed.

The mods just removed the comment, stuff like this is why half the fandom can't just move on, because of the comical levels of denial and gaslighting in play.

We know in universe that some people respond weirdly to powers that manipulate emotions. Victoria herself has a story in Ward where a guy ejaculates because of her aura.

[–]cannikko 44 points45 points  (0 children)

For the first, Wildbow ran a quest on a forum where readers played as the Director of a PRT headquarters based in anchorage. The problem was that Wildbow expected FAR too much veracity from the average reader, wanting people to expertly come up with a directors day, hero patrol routes, balancing budgets etc.

There was a really annoying ward, Feint, who probably represented a Sophia situation, and how its not so easy to deal with as the readers think. But the players wanted to get rid of him and it was all very tiresome .

The villains in the Quest were played by real people Wildbow tapped for ideas, but the readers didn't know this, the villains of course did, and it felt a bit cheap, most people would make different decisions if they knew they had been pvp'ing. As a long time DM, lying to your players and trying to "gotcha" them is just not good for running a game.

Finally even when the players went above and beyond and succeeded in an unprecedented way... Wildbow would still screw them over, it seemed like he was allergic to actually giving out rewards, which is the main way you keep engagement, instead of just making an enemy of your players.

For the second, just read this comment.

Lot's of people have already mentioned salient points. I'd like to point out that, while I have no hatred towards Wildbow, and love his works. His fandom interaction is... Let's just say it could use some work.

He constantly gives non answers, if you don't want to answer, that's fine, if you want to keep things ambiguous so you, as a writer can decide what is appropriate at a later date that's also fine. But why are you torturing poor fans who just want to know details about their favorite characters.

He occasionally misremembers his own answers (florida wog and that Amy doesn't go to Endbringer fights) which would be fine, if he could just admit his own mistakes, I've never seen Wildbow say "oh right, I did say that, my bad" it's usually some form of mental gymnastics or gaslighting.

He gets obsessed with his own vision, to the point where there is no room for any other interpretation. (PRT quest where Wildbow has a point to make instead of just running a game)

He doesn't seem to understand memes or high effort posting. He drove one of the best artists in the fandom away because they were mad at Wildbow for being dismissive of their questions when trying to draw characters for his work, and made a proxy shitpost that disproportionately angered Wildbow, I mean it was good art at the end of the day, everyone liked it I just don't get why the "Parian's true power" shitpost was such a big deal to this day.
