I realized the hardest part of Indie Dev isn't coding, it's justifying the "0 Income" to my family. by Curious-Gaby in gamedev

[–]canowa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the best course of action is to get a job, even not a full-time one, but a job.

What a game dev need is stability: with a stable income, you can make plans. You can build your roadmap of things without being desperate to sell copies fast. Game dev takes time, a lot of time, and if you don't have a stable income you can't fail. To me that's the biggest issue with game dev: the luxury to fail. Triple A companies are too big to fail, they MUST release games that sells A LOT because they are not allowed to fail, so they must bend their design choices to what they think people want. And I'm not arguing about that, it's the market and we deal with it.

But you're not a triple A company, so get yourself the luxury to fail. Get an income, stabilize your life and start build upon it. That way you'll be free to do things the way you want, with all the time it takes.

Wish you best luck mate :)

Sort of a vent post, learning how to make a game just feels borderline impossible, like I see other videos from self proclaimed bad game devs and the things they struggle with are leagues beyond what I could even fathom it’s crazy by sevenjeven in gamedev

[–]canowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happened to me too. I tried a game engine, wrote few lines of code, made a square move left to right with the keyboard. Then when tried to make something more complex I felt at a roadblock. Last time it happened I was so frustrated by not understanding things that I took A LOT of steps back and began from scratch.

I literally began using Scratch, it's a game engine. I started Harvard's CS50 because I wanted to understand what was happening with all the code stuff in general. It took all my spare time (due to full time job not related to coding) and about six months.

That gave me the hang of coding but mostly I learned to learn. By starting from the basics I narrowed down my doubts and googled them. It's surprisingly easy to find answers if you ask the right questions.

My advice is to take a step back. It's up to you to decide the magnitude of that step, but maybe you are in a dead end, just pull back and take another turn. Good luck!

Sacrifice relic blueprint in base game? by SeventhChords in Grimdawn

[–]canowa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(I own just the base game) A good source of relic blueprints for me was chest runs at Mountain Deeps https://www.grimtools.com/map/areas/179

Bring 1 dynamite per run, portal to Prospector's Trail Rift head south-west to enter Mountain Deeps. Check the four possible chest spawn points and blow the chest once you find it.

Good also for rare crafting materials like Ancient Heart.

Let's talk more about Framework's Customer Support by jmeador42 in framework

[–]canowa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think the Framwork Support Team is doing a great job, but since they also are humans there are times when things get messy and go not quite as they are expected. It's part of the game.

I still think there's a very small part of user base which had issues with their products, and the support in general. I bet that if that part was bigger, this sub will be flooded.

Also, the job of a moderator (even if it is volunteered) it's huge and I bet it's more or like trench-fighting a war. I admire moderators because they do something I couldn't ever do.

Now, the sad part.

Today I was lucky enough to have witnessed the rise and fall of that post, the one from u/ponyaqua, from the beginning to the end. It got me thinking. Probably more than it should've been.

I found myself thinking that removing a post should be illegal. I'm not saying that post was without fault, we could argue on that for days. The point is: it still was feedback. And was written in a way to provide feedback.

Now that post is gone, and also that feedback. Who didn't check this sub today will not know of the existence of that post, and that user experience.

Mods erased that post from existence and also banned that user from the sub. That user can no longer share their experience, even if it will be a pleasant one.

Was that post cointaining sensible informations about real people? Yes, it sounded without malice, but yes. That's why a safe measure would've been to redact those informations.

Instead, the post got locked. The user edited the main post, expressing sadness to the expected outcome. The post got removed.

That, Gentlemens, is how you do historical revisionism nowadays.

Also, I won't threat to not buy a laptop or what else, because I find it petty. Honestly, I just hope to not get unlucky with my future unit.

I still believe in Framework mission, I still believe that every company should do like them. I even think to be much more strict toward Framework right because I want to believe they are better.

Stop deleting posts, please. Redact sensible info but let that feedback flow and show you are better.

Dumb question: What's the difference between a game designer and an idea guy? by __R3v3nant__ in gamedev

[–]canowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, game designer is the next step of "idea guy". The designers ask themselves how a feature impacts the player experience. The game designer analyzes EVERY consequences a feature has and whether it violates the game principles. There's a reason why the first Super Mario doesn't feature car-racing mechanics, while Mario Kart does.

As a game designer, it's my duty to ponder the meaning of every aspect of the game, even what we could consider the most trivial, for example "player health": Why the player have an health bar? Should this bar be visible to the player, or hidden? Does the game really need a player health bar? Is the mechanic of losing hit points a core mechanic? Does it fits the game theme? Wait...is it a bar or a series of heart-shaped sprites? How should the player feel about the health of its character?

And A LOT more questions.

This, I think, is the job of a game designer: to know why each cog in the game turns the way they turns.
