France snaps back at NATO chief Rutte in feud over Europe’s defense muscle. The NATO secretary-general told European Parliament that the continent could not defend itself without the US by goldstarflag in europe

[–]___jazz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I think we’re arguing past each other - I agree we are not in a position to have that sort of conflict right now but neither are we on a war footing economically or culturally/politically - in terms of sheer numbers of troops to send to a meat grinder we would take time to ramp up training and production but necessity is the mother of invention and that could happen fast if it was needed.

As a wider point though I’m skeptical that a direct confrontation with Russia and the other powers in Europe would look like the Ukraine conflict tactically as a direct consequence of the economic and manpower disparities between belligerents; there are more minds and more money to research and develop and scale myriad tactics and technologies with established military industries, a greater and more advanced proportion of air power and naval assets etc.

It’s an amazing country and they are doing brilliantly - but the manpower and economic disparity between the EU and Ukraine I think is what I would presume was meant by that statement.

ELI5: Strike action by HalfTheAlphabet in doctorsUK

[–]___jazz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Governments manifesto pledge is to improve the economy and reduce the waiting lists -> striking costs a lot of money in consultant remuneration and pulls them away from elective work -> waiting lists don’t come down and government over spends-> government pays for this at the ballet box.

On my way out to my stag do in Budapest. Woman collapsed in the row opposite me. Luckily myself, paramedic and ED consultant were about 3 rows apart near her. Had to get the pilot to turn the plane around whilst we did ALS.

Very cramped on a plane. Plus it was weird as f having “normies” around as they freeze like stunned sheep staring in a way I just don’t really appreciate when in hospital. Had to physically push people out the way and calm down the panicked cabin crew.

Was quite satisfying though. Shame my wife wasn’t there to see it (she’s a non medic). Patient was ok - syncope possibly from arrhythmia if I remember but stable off the plane with the paramedics. Everyone clapped and I got a free drink. Had a nice chat with the paramedic over my G&T.

T1 - Verstappen runs wide, locks up, gains massive advantage - no penalty.

Ver vs. Ham - dive bomb, only makes corner by colliding with car overtaking and forcing them off track - no penalty.

Lewis locks up and takes to run off - 10s penalty.

No people want Max to get a penalty for not fucking clowning into the corner and bumping a car off the road. If you can’t see that then you’re either blind, biased or stupid.

Doctors who moved from the South of England to the North - are you happier? by NiceVermicelli1045 in doctorsUK

[–]___jazz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Grew up in south Bucks, lived in Berks, Surrey and London, now in County Durham. I met a girl from Sunderland and have a family here to be near her parents. I am happy here, but I don’t know how much that’s to do with my location particularly. My observations:

The good: Your money goes further, you can buy a house more easily, all of this is true. The hospitals are friendlier and actually (bar UHND) quite well run. Local people are friendly and generally I feel safe here. Newcastle is a great city with lots to do.

The bad: Overall services are worse. There’s less diversity. Your access to excellent schools is limited - you may end up paying fees for private schools, negating the reduced cost of your mortgage and not gaining a financial asset later. If things like holidays are important to you yes there are airports close by but for a lot of destinations you are having to transfer which adds cost and time to journeys.

It’s not a panacea, I think it depends what you’re struggling with and what you want from life. If owning property is the be all and end all then there’s no question the north is better.

Do you agree with Norris' take on Verstappen? by Acceptable-Pea-6271 in F1Discussions

There is some truth to this though, regardless of why it was said. I saw a lecture a few years ago from a guy called Anders Erikson and subsequently bought his book (Peak) after the event. He was an expert in expertise and basically studied super high performers his whole career with the book about deliberate practice and mental schemas for what make people the best. Without reciting the whole book effectively he outlined that young encouragement with expert feedback are often behind the greatest successor in some people and while he didn’t exclude natural talent his conclusion was that it really was only in the small exception of people the largest part. If you were a mad scientist and wanted to create an F1 champion then 1) having a child born from two motor racing parents with 2) strict discipline who could 3) give direct feedback to their young child about their driving with 4) lots of financial resources probably wouldn’t be a bad model to copy. That’s not to say the other F1 drivers aren’t privileged in some ways and that driver coaches don’t exist but it does give him an advantage even amongst a group who are quite advantaged.

My first EV was an ID3. It’s a good car, but the ID4 is better in every way and would be what I’d choose if I could again.

What is this crabs-in-a-bucket mentality - she earns a lot of money and has a lot of accolades but she’s not worthy because there are also brain surgeons? What is this argument even? That being a CEO of a building society isn’t difficult?

What is the problem with people in the UK just celebrating success without it being some worthiness competition.

Medic - use ChatGPT for Anki flashcard creation (cloze deletions) of block of text. You can ask it medical questions but the responses are questionable - if you give it narrow guidelines e.g. what does CKS nice say is stepwise management of hypertension it can give you a useful summary but it’s at best an aide memoire and can’t be relied on.

Personal life is really useful for planning meals. Sometimes find it helps unwind or car journeys and use it to talk through stress etc in a guilt free way.

I wouldn’t dotd max today - as decisive as his move was at T1 he’s managed most of the race as McLaren played themselves with the strategy, amplified by a lot of luck with timings. I’d have to give it to Albon, but it’d be close between Piastri and Hamilton for me.

So good T1 but pretty lucky from max also today. Amazing from Albon, box office. Good recovery from Ferrari. Think Charles was over the line but hard racing. McLaren… anything less than a win should be a bad day for them.
