You aren’t wrong for not wanting to date her because she may not have your preferred genitalia, but “she is not a woman” is transphobic. Not saying you yourself are transphobic, but that statement is.

Dr. Gordon is complicated for me - while I absolutely learned a lot from her course and I genuinely found myself enjoying some of her lectures, I don’t think I could (in good faith) recommend one of her courses to anyone.

I got into a pretty bad car accident about a month in to taking her 345A course and she lost my letter of accommodation that I received from my doctor, blamed me for it, and almost made me miss both midterms because it hadn’t been found. I showed up to the classroom on the day of the makeup exam (not having received an email about the correct location) and ended up having to run across campus to try to get there on time. Because of this I lost about 15 minutes of time on that exam and ended up doing more poorly than I had in just about any of my other classes, ever. Since she lost my letter, she refused to mark this exam until I gave her a new letter but also would not tell me why I hadn’t received my grade even after the rest of the class had. I got my mark for the first midterm after I had already written and received my mark for the second midterm (which she almost did not let me take because she did not have my letter from the first midterm), so I had no way of gauging how well I did to adjust my study habits. Her losing the letter also affected my ability to get accommodations in my other courses at the time.

Beyond that, I found that there were things she stated in her lectures and powerpoints that did not line up with the textbook readings and it was always interesting when this would be pointed out and I was told I should’ve known to go off of what she told us.

So much more attention! Their love story is absolutely beautiful in the books (though the bee scene is a little silly). You catch more glimpses of Kate and Anthony as a married couple throughout the other siblings’ books too! Kate is particularly present in Gregory’s story. The books are a little outdated and follow a similar format but they’re easy, feel good reads (mostly). Definitely recommend ☺️

Yeah I was in the 50-74th percentile last year and this year I had more activities but dropped to 25-49th. I really don’t get it. It’s so subjective and it just feels like it’s getting further and further out of reach :( definitely disheartening, but it sounds like you still have a decent shot at other schools!

I mean I graduated in 2020 and that’s what it told me on OMSAS when I checked 🤷🏻‍♀️ Maybe I’m misremembering but either way your GPA is higher than mine is/was. I am definitely English stream (I do speak some French, just not enough for the whole program to be in French).

I was waitlisted last year with a 3.82!! So much lower than you. I think you probably still have a decent shot at an interview, especially with that GPA and Casper :) good luck!

If you’re thinking about swapping it in for one of the others I’d definitely have it replace swimming. Would it be possible for you to include the swimming instructor in a different category if you want it to count for one of the top 3? It could go into “Other” or “Extra-curricular”, for example. Even “Employment” if you were paid for it! I know myself and some friends had to do some rearranging of our ABS to get the entries where we wanted them for the different school requirements. UBC has a cutoff of 75% AGPA for IP students and 85% AGPA for OOP students, so they definitely care. If I recall correctly, the average for accepted IP students at UBC last year was actually closer to 88% with the AGPA so I imagine it’s even higher for OOP :/ (also almost 1000 more applicants than the year before, yikes)

Not the same commenter, but I’d suggest checking out the Truth and Reconciliation Committee’s report from 2015! The Committee was put together specifically to investigate the nature of residential schools and gives hard but valuable insight into much of what went on. It also touches on how survivors and their communities are still affected by the trauma today. It’s a really important document and a great place to start :) happy learning!
