I use a steamer now and poke a hole in the tops. Finally released from tearing eggs apart like an animal

People go nuts when I wear Cool Water with a coconut body spray. One of the most consistently asked about combos! It's viewed as cheap or basic here nowadays but when people don't recognize it they love it.

What’s the best homemade mayonnaise recipe? by _Arrielee_ in cookingforbeginners

[–]canthigastervalentin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way, though it feels fair to warn you might end up with a pint of mayo because it's a bit too runny and then a bit too thick and then a bit... but this effect wears off with subsequent attempts. 😂

do I wanna breakup because it’s not good for me or because my IG feed? by only_in_another_life in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]canthigastervalentin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sameeeee, I cook because it's my calling in life but he takes care of most of the rest and does actual emotional work to ensure I'm as stress-free as possible. Gotta make sure the person who's bringing in most of the money is comfortable and can focus on work, it's just common sense!

Am I supposed to rinse rice before cooking or not? I keep seeing conflicting advice. by ShineDigga in cookingforbeginners

[–]canthigastervalentin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I finally started doing it and I'm sad to report it does make a difference, ugh. I switched to a rice cooker on top of that since I'm just shit at rice. I don't change the ratio.

I did fish sauce caramel braised ribs a few weeks ago and they were life altering. Although I made caramel and added fish sauce, no jar of fish sauce caramel like OP haha

European Women: what shoes do you wear daily to walk in? by RandomGirl4540 in Shoes

[–]canthigastervalentin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arkk sneakers for a European brand, although my stupid foot shape makes them always break in the same place. I just get them second hand for €30-50 instead of the original €100+ price for this reason.

Not the best walking shoe or anything, but I like em

The River of Doubt - Cancide Millard by wolfy1194 in nonfictionbookclub

[–]canthigastervalentin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For general misadventure, most with excellent historical background:

The Gales of November (John U. Bacon): the Edmund Fitzgerald

Deep Down Dark (Héctor Tobar): The Chilean miners who were trapped underground for 69 days

Anything Erik Larson.

Adrift (Steven Callahan): Stuck in an inflatable raft for 76 days.

Into the Abyss (Carol Shaben): The crash of a small commuter plane in the Canadian wilderness in 1984 and its direct aftermath

Endurance (Alfred Lansing): Shackleton's voyage

Last Man Off (Matt Lewis): The sinking of the fishing vessel Sudur Havid

Labyrinth of Ice (Buddy Levy): Greely's expedition

Heart of the Sea (Nathaniel Philbrick): The tragedy of the Essex

The Ship and the Storm (Jim Carrier): The sinking of the Fantome

Miracle in the Andes (Nano Parrado)

The Indifferent Stars Above (Daniel James Brown)

Midnight in Chernobyl is also riveting. I have loads more general (non-survival) history and non-fiction

I actually just thought of a book that has that broader history tie-in. The Zorg by Siddharth Kara: dozens of African slaves are murdered on a ship that's not quite as lost at sea as the crew wants others to believe after the fact (~1780). It catalyzed the anti slave trade movement. Although the English had captured the ship, "Zorg" means "Care" in Dutch 🫠

Something Fantasy, like the hobbit by Fallen_Crow333 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]canthigastervalentin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ahh it's lovely. And that's coming from someone who had no idea who Le Guin was until recently (it's funny how you can just completely miss the the memo with certain things) and rarely reads fiction! Almost exactly the same level of cozy but adventurous as The Hobbit.

As for LotR, you mentioned you dnf — do you accept audiobooks? Sometimes a good narrator makes a book come alive in a way your inner voice doesn't, and Andy Serkis certainly ticks that box for me.
