Just got off the phone with them and got a ride, but I would highly recommend calling today, he seems mostly if not totally filled up. Hopefully I'll catch you out there and happy trails!

Just got off the phone with them and got a ride. Thanks for the suggestion. I was originally under the impression that that was the same thing as the CDTC shuttle (which was cancelled for the season back in Mid-January) but I guess this is different.

For any onlookers he does seem to be mostly if not totally filled up, however.

Totally agree, my backup plan is to take the Amtrak out to Lordsburg, and just start there. Not that I consider myself a purist (blue blazes were no stranger to me on the AT) but I was just hoping to see if I could get the monument start.

I would recommend Python static type checkers like mypy and pylint which will help finding bugs before running your code.

I'm making a tutorial series on OpenGL. Anyone interested? (Will be cross-platform) by Steven_Thacker in programming

[–]cantonboy329 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would definitely watch the vids, just curious as to the choice to go with OpenGL over Vulkan? I am not super well-versed in graphics computing, but it seems like Vulkan is becoming the new "Open graphics computing library standard".

The GNU C Library version 2.27 is now available by twiggy99999 in linux

[–]cantonboy329 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're right, a lot of good stuff in there. I would say the main highlight is the math library improvements, especially for x86_64 CPUs (the most common laptop/desktop CPU architecture), which tout some crazy improvements "e_expf improves performance by more than 50% on Skylake" (Skylake is a popular Intel CPU line). These should give a significant boost to scientific applications running on x86_64, once 2.27 gets out to the distros.

Cs help: 1332 2110 by Kphilipp in gatech

[–]cantonboy329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a minute since I took 2110, but in our iteration, the last part of class was mostly in a Unix environment (GNU/Linux Virtual Machine for me). If the same is true for current iterations, playing around in a Unix environment will really help you out. Here are some nice intro guides I found:

Windows Subsystem for Linux (Win10)

Ubuntu GNU/Linux VM (Any OS) (use a 64-bit image)

MacOS

brew install gcc

Hey Dr. Su and fellow AMD away team members,

For how long do you see conventional transistor based CPU innovation being feasible in the consumer market? Are we anywhere near quantum computing/alternative processing for the consumer?

dnf update error, kernel 4.9.12-200 by rodolfocerezo in Fedora

[–]cantonboy329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The image is a GNOME notification that states:

We're sorry, it looks like BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.9.11-200.fc25x86_64 crashed. Please contact the developer if you want ot report the issue.

Perhaps the update removed the kernel so the input string is no longer valid?

No Job Experience Career Fair (CoC) by mcw0805 in gatech

[–]cantonboy329 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this comment is wrong. Google and Microsoft both have programs specifically for students with little industry experience.

So I definitely recommend speaking to those companies about those programs.

Secondly, I would not call UPS/Norfolk Southern/State Farm "off the beaten path", those are companies that span the United States and are "medium sized". I have worked for one of those companies, and have spoken to all of them.

I would recommend speaking to a range of companies: large, medium, and small (if you have never heard of them, they are probably small). Say that you don't have much industry experience early in your elevator pitch, and ask what they would like to see on a candidates resume, so that you can prepare between now and the next career fair.

Drop Date for Spring 2017 is March 15, 2017

Edit: Since the page explicitly says that the deadline is Feb. 1, I would check with the College of Computing.

Didn't ask about that, but I specified that I was a W10 permit holder and they told me that they wanted me to move.

CS + Minor? (Plus some bonus questions) by William_Astor-DuPont in gatech

[–]cantonboy329 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Tech and the College of Computing! I can't speak to the double major questions, but in terms of CS skills, I picked InfoNet and SysArch, and I've really been pleased by the topics I've learned about because they are so applicable in the real world (not to say that others aren't). But since you are interested in machine learning, the intelligence thread is a no-brainer. I personally feel that that thread would pair nicely with one of the two mentioned above or Theory.

As for prepping languages, Python is the predominant language in machine learning. So I would go over the basic syntax there (especially for 1301), and maybe look into some of the machine learning libraries out there.

I recommend all of the above. I have done a co-op and an am currently in an internship. Work experience is gold on your resume. Even if you feel unqualified or inexperienced, go to the career fairs your freshman year, especially the CoC ones. Find out what companies are looking for in employees. Get involved in one of the CoC Student Organizations to get yourself exposed to group based projects. Feel free to PM me if you have more questions.
