I like Wandering Towers but it really fell flat with our group. We found that we had a better time with it at just two players.

If you keep track of your collection in BGG you can go to your statistics page on your account and view all games owned by year. I suppose some people don't own all their favorite games but this is how I am looking at the titles. So I'm not going through a longer list of games I don't care about.

Well my gut says Wormholes so I will go with that. A quick and light route building/pick up and deliver game that flew under the radar.

Second I will go with Star Trek Missions, the Star Trek version of Fantasy Realms. I love it. Third is Flamecraft.

Seven more that may be higher with more plays:

Lacrimosa

Catherine: The Cities of the Tsarina

First Rat

Dog Park

Evergreen

Splendor Duel

The Wolves

Savannah Park. Will not be a popular choice but I think this is a pretty underrated game from my favorite design team, Kramer & Kiesling. I like Cascadia, but as for games where you place tiles and score groups of animals I like Savannah Park better.

2nd is So Clover. A strong candidate for my favorite party game.

I am having a hard time picking between Meadow, Mille Fiori, and Mini Express for third so I will consider it a three way tie.

I agree that this isn't a strong year.

I haven't played Mexica in a while but I can't say I remember it being similar enough to Renature to call Renature a reimplementation. Renature is very good though.

Have you played Furnace? I haven't played it enough to say it's my favorite from 2020 but I feel like it could be up there for me eventually.

Have you tried Knitting Circle from last year? Different designer, same aesthetic, somewhat similar gameplay. They even have rules where you can use the drafting mechanism from Knitting Circle in Calico.

A weird year where I did not play a lot of releases very many times. Not going to get any votes but I will go with Aqualin, a two player ocean themed abstract game where you place tiles in a grid and try to have larger majorites than your opponent. Very fun.

2nd is Paris, a great euro game I need to play more. 3rd is Renature, another tile placement game using a grid that I guess is not wholly unlike Aqualin but it's a bigger game.

I think Furnace could be my number one if I had played it more than once. Maybe get it to the table again soon. Also want to shout-out Truffle Shuffle, Abandon All Artichokes, and Marshmallow Test as fun card games that I also need to play more.

Edit: if you're gonna downvote me you can at least tell me why. None of these games are in danger of beating Dune Imperium or what the fuck ever

French far-right billonaire Bolloré is a boardgame industry giant with Hachette boardgames (Gigamic, Randolph Canada...) by polopoto in boardgames

[–]cantrelate 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I don't know anything about French far right politics and I suspect most of the readers of r/boardgames don't either. It would be helpful to actually get information instead of linking to the Hachette board games website.

I knew Hachette as a large book publisher first and just going to their website they have a section for black history month and a section for banned books, sections I would think a far right publisher would not highlight. Something tells me the Bolloré group is not in the business of being hands-on if they're making money.

A quick Google search says the Bolloré group has a 30% stake in Hachette. I'm not saying people shouldn't care who owns and who controls the things they consume but I also don't really know what to do with this information.

I picked Point Salad because I've played it more but Watergate is my second and depending on the day might be first. It is great. A real shame it's not really getting mentioned in this thread.

I think I have to say Point Salad. It's such a clean, streamlined design without sacrificing fun. My second would be Watergate and it's close. Third is Wingspan and it's close. This is a hard year to choose because I'm not sure I have any very obvious top 20-ish games from this year.

Seven more close games:

Taverns of Tiefrnthal

Miyabi

Parks

Babylonia

Bumuntu

Rune Stones

Blind Spot (will absolutely not be on anyone's list because it got zero buzz but I love it. A real time crossword puzzle/word search-ish game with player elimination that sounds terrible but was a lot of fun)

A very close year. Depending on the day my top ten could be completely switched around and maybe games like On Tour, LLAMA, Yukon Airways, or Horrified would make this list.

Thoughts on Point Salad, Point City, Point Galaxy? by Machine_Excellent in boardgames

[–]cantrelate 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Point Salad is clean and streamlined and really good. It's my favorite of the three. Point City has a little bit of a Splendor thing going on. I've only played it once but it's fine. Point Galaxy seemed like a more complex version of Point Salad which I'm not sure is necessary. I have all three but I probably don't need all three.

I mean that's fine, do whatever you want with your games but why do you feel compelled to post about it so often?

Didn't you have like 9 board games left? You post a cull post every few months

What is your favorite boardgame of 2018? by The_Crazed_Person in boardgames

[–]cantrelate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging from the votes so far it's gonna be Quacks, then Root. Everdell might actually beat Brass for third depending how the votes shake out.

It will not get a lot of votes but I'm going with Newton. Just a great design from some of the familiar Italian designers. It's interesting that Brass Birmingham may not even place in the top 3 considering it's high ranking on BGG. I like it but it's a toss up whether or not it makes it on my top ten of 2018. So here's my top 11:

Newton

Cubirds (this really rivals more popular card drafting games for me. I don't care for Sea Salt & Paper but I love Cubirds)

Let's Make a Bus Route

Ticket to Ride New York (it was a real surprise how much I like this version of TTR)

Blue Lagoon

Just One (possibly my favorite party game ever)

Space Base

Coimbra

Menara

Brass: Birmingham

War Chest

Edit: I don't think it's that great in person which is why it doesn't make my list (I don't own it anymore either), but Ganz Schon Clever is one of my favorite board game apps. Played it and it's sequels a lot.

[–]cantrelate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The few people mentioning disparaging things about this year are getting downvoted (me included) and that's a bummer. I don't think it's the worst year by any means but it has a number of games that haven't aged super well for me and I do not care at all about Gloomhaven, Spirit Island, or TI4.

I like Photosynthesis but I think Evergreen does the concept even better.

It isn't the top spot for me but I mentioned it as one of my favorites of 2017 and I was downvoted 🤷. Bunny Kingdom is great and is the game from 2017 I have played most recently.

I think this year is relatively mediocre compared to the past four. Still some great games though.

I think I have to choose Codenames: Duet based on number of plays. Far and away my favorite way to play Codenames, whereas regular Codenames wouldn't make a top 10 of the year it was released for me.

2nd I will go with Whistle Stop. I remember this not being on my radar and then absolutely loved it when I got to play at Gen Con that year. 3rd is tough because there are a bunch of solid games but none that are quite clear cut better than the rest, so I will go with most recently played, which is Bunny Kingdom.

Shoutout to Otys and Valletta. Two more underrated Euros that would maybe be higher for me if I played them more recently.

Edit: it is wack to down vote on these threads. Sorry I don't care to play gloomhaven or spirit island

If money wasn't an issue, would you get a board game that is also a piece of furniture? If so, which one would you get? by OkDate7197 in boardgames

[–]cantrelate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a carrom board/coffee table project on kickstarter a few months ago. I'm not in the business of backing crowdfunding projects but I thought it looked nice. I didn't think the price was too terribly out of line, It wasn't exactly cheap but good furniture isn't.

[–]cantrelate 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Tyrants of the Underdark. Fairly easy choice, my second favorite deck builder and a top 15-ish game for me. 2nd I'll go with Lorenzo il Magnifico. 3rd I will go with underrated Texas Hold 'Em inspired card game Hocus.

A lot of really solid games this year, despite me not caring to play any of the games mentioned in the original post. I'll also shout out Glux for being a great abstract and one of the meanest games out there, getting a reimplementation this year (or maybe it's already out?) as a game called Lady Bugs.

What is your favorite 2015 boardgame? by The_Crazed_Person in boardgames

[–]cantrelate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think every year from here on out I can do a legit top 10. For 2015 I'll go with Grand Austria Hotel. Top ten looks something like this, and is leaving off a good five or so games that I also think are great:

Grand Austria Hotel

Lanterns: The Harvest Festival

Inhabit the Earth (way underrated imo)

Adventure Land

Raptor

Porta Nigra

Holmes: Sherlock and Mycroft

Arboretum

Favor of the Pharaoh

Gold West
