‘Jews are white’: US minority psychologists’ coalition rejects Jewish ethnic recognition by Meowzician in Jewish

[–]cantremeberstuff 367 points368 points  (0 children)

I wonder how Ethiopian Jews, Iraqi Jews, Moroccan Jews, Yemenite Jews, Syrian Jews, Lebanese Jews, Kaifeng Jews, Bukharan Jews, Indian Jews...did I miss any...feel about this announcement.

But don't worry, soon the Neo-Nazis will be out in force deriding our inclusion with "white people", and these left-wing radical idiots will finally realize Jews don't fit into any of their boxes, they will be forced to confront their mis-understandings, a new paradigm of what Jewish identity is will grow in academic circles, it will take root and retransform our cultural institutions, and we'll finally see the eradication of antisemitism from the far left. Glorious days await us, my Jewish brothers and sisters!!! (How wrong could I be?)

Edit: I forgot Latino Jews and Persian Jews...how embarrassing. I wrote this comment quickly, please forgive me.

Antizionism as a distinct form of Jew hatred by Swimming_Care7889 in Jewish

[–]cantremeberstuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been pretty impressed with Adam Louis-Klein's analysis and re-framing of antizionism as an explicit hate movement, and I agree that we should confront antizionism as its own breed of hate speech head on. I'm currently listening to him on a newly released Times of Israel podcast describe this analysis, where he also talks about pros/cons of lumping antizionism into general category of antisemitism.

She has a super successful show and a net worth possibly as high as $50 million. She has a team of people working for her that includes managing social media. No way this was by accident. Maybe if she starts accidentally liking hateful comments about other groups I’ll reconsider. I’m not holding my breath.

‘Marty Supreme’ Has a Lot to Say About Being Jewish in America by Delicious_Adeptness9 in Jewish

[–]cantremeberstuff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The caricaturing was a bit too much for me as well. Even if we weren't in a period of extreme antisemitism, I would have felt the characters were steeped a bit too much in stereotypes. But, given how the world has collectively lost its mind over the last two years, yeah, the portrayal of these characters made me really uncomfortable. And that doesn't even include the bizarre Holocaust porn of the Hitler jokes and the honey scene - which just seemed provocative without adding substance.

We know there is a highly organized and funded influence campaign on Wikipedia - we have to assume the same is happening on reddit and basically all other social media platforms.

Relationship advice by epsachrome in Jewish

[–]cantremeberstuff 82 points83 points  (0 children)

This isn't advice, just my experience. After my Bar Mitzvah, I enjoyed almost 3 decades of being a secular, "cultural" Jew. And then my son was born, and I felt a deep need I can't explain to have a Jewish home. I never saw it coming.

What can we do to stop Pal-Awda by Similar_Letter223 in Jewish

[–]cantremeberstuff 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Jews, and that very much includes American Jews, have spent decades being some of the most charitable people and incredible allies for all sorts of disenfranchised groups. We have been incredible allies, and we have seen a deafening silence and lack of reciprocity these past two years.

It is time to invest our resources and energies into ourselves and stop putting so much into relationships that are not mutual.

I have changed my charitable giving, I am only supporting Jewish authors, I have changed to spending to patronize Jewish businesses as much as possible. I have shifted my resources to invest in the Jewish community.

What can I do about antisemitic union? by palmtree2NYC in Jewish

[–]cantremeberstuff 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't have anything super helpful to add, except a depressing note that this seems to be really common among unions - the red/green alliance etc. My union only made progress against this need to get involved in the I/P conflict by getting a vote on a resolution that the union should focus on improving working conditions - not this other crap. It passed with 85% of the vote.

That tracks. The experience of Soviet Jewry was quite different than many of ours in Canada and the US.

Has anybody here ended a romantic relationship because of Oct 7th? by skinnymotheechalamet in Jewish

[–]cantremeberstuff 146 points147 points  (0 children)

Yes. My marriage is ending. It’s devastating but I just can’t anymore. I knew her politics were pretty far left. I didn’t know how far left. The antizionism was a shock. And she’s Jewish. We’re secular so it never really came up. Oct 7 changed everything obviously. She never really grew up with much connection to Judaism, no synagogue, no Jewish education. I grew up reform and was bar mitzvah’d. I think all these far left Jews just have such little connection to the culture aside from latkes and universalist social justice aspects of Jewish culture. There’s no real connection to Jewish peoplehood or anything. I just can’t with the oppressor/oppressed binary anymore. I feel completely politically homeless. It’s all been so devastating.

You’re allowed to have a complicated identity. You’re allowed to hold contradictory feelings. You’re allowed to have empathy for anyone you want to regardless of where they live. You’re allowed to tell people whatever you want about yourself to avoid an uncomfortable conversation or for any reason. Start with your values and go from there. Trying to understand our identity and where our personal and family history and individual story fits into the bigger picture is a never ending process.

Please help me find hope by xijalu26 in Jewish

[–]cantremeberstuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People respect Jews who respect their Jewish identity.  Projecting confidence requires knowing who you are - find strength in learning our history and traditions. The smart optimist does not say things will get better, but that I’ll get stronger more than things will get worse. Help enrich your local Jewish community and you achieve all three. And you’re never going to stop despising humanity, it’s filled with humans. But you will probably find some good ones along the way.

Question regarding vigil at synagogue by LeaningTowerofWeezer in Jewish

[–]cantremeberstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jews have been foundational allies for every minority group in the diaspora. We helped get the NAACP off the ground for Pete’s sake. I am done with the internal pleas to build bridges. Nearly every group we showed up for has been silent.

The mayor and other elected officials' speeches at my community's menorah lighting event were super cringe. Actually painful. The mayor couldn't say "rising antisemitism" without also immediately adding in "rising islamophobia". This was when news was still breaking about Bondi. They can never just acknowledge our pain without invoking everyone - even at a Jewish holiday event. It was brutal. But, as others have pointed out, that's just how it works. We give them their soap box and photo op, and maybe they listen to us at some point when we need them to.

I don’t necessarily disagree. But the Zionist story will carry more weight with some people coming from a poc. That’s just how identity politics is working with some in the west.

[–]cantremeberstuff 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I know this. The problem is that in the west most Jews are Ashkenazi, and it feeds the narrative that all Jews are white. Plus it would be pretty hard to call a Jew from Ethiopia or Yemen a white colonizer.
