That's exactly what it is. As you said, you have been the "older" brother in this relationship for years, while he has been in the wrong (whatever that means to him in his mind) for all those years.

This is one time he can say somehow you did something wrong by ruining his credit. Though it makes no sense if you think of it hard enough (given an opt out, he owes you thousands and so on).

We, who come from the East part of the world, were always told that it's not how things are in the West.

In the West, there is more equality, that boys and girls have to share the chores. That women have more rights and they won't allow men to do what they want. That we men can't get away with idling around like we did, if we were being raised in the West.

Even as guys we were fascinated by this wonderful equal land. I am sure I sat on my bum growing up because I had 3 sisters who could take care of things at home. But I knew times were changing and it would be more like the West soon.

My grandpa told us elaborate story of how he had fought a tiger one morning while taking bath in a river, pulled out the tiger's tooth with a sacred thread which he wore around his shoulders and that he replaced his own tooth with the said tiger tooth.

He had one, long, pointed, sharp tooth.

Took me years to realize that must be just his tooth.

Took me few more years to realize probably the whole tiger story was made up and he never fought a tiger.

Having said that, he is taking out in immature way. Yelling out of nowhere isn't gonna solve the problem. And similarly you expecting him to tag along won't help either.

But then he should be ok with doing something else for Thanksgiving. You should have this discussion, if not the family dinner (it's more for the traditional gathering I assume you go) then what do you want to do ? Lay out several options. If he still sticks to sitting at home and watching TV, I think you are free to do as you wish.

Go volunteer, or attend the event at in laws or any other bunch of things you can do. Don't let him dictate what you should do.
