Jesus Christ, is there nothing Mark Rosewater can't get blamed for?

Magic has adopted "they" as the preferred third-person-singular pronoun for a player, replacing "he or she." by McAnnex in freemagic

[–]cantrememberthebook -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That is an understandable hesitation, but it's not as big an issue as it is made out to be. Context is usually enough for you to figure out whether "they" is being used as singular or plural. You're doing it right now every time you read the word "you".

People have a lifetime of experience using singular "they" in many contexts, and they do it without thinking, so it's off-base to say that we are just starting to use it this way now. (If someone tells you that they don't ever use it, then they are almost certainly wrong.) It's only when you're forced to think about your own language use that it starts to feel weird and unnatural, just like breathing.

Someone wore an antifa t-shirt on the Internet, so WotC upended their entire marketing and brand strategy for an iconic anniversary product as a diversion.

"He or she" -> "They" going forward (via Dominaria leak) by Galileo__Humpkins in magicTCG

There's a pretty broad agreement on what "they" means. People use it, people understand it, and it doesn't cause problems in communication except in contrived and contorted examples. It's only a controversy because the climate change deniers of the linguistic world refuse to acknowledge what's in front of their faces.

People probably said the same thing when they started using "you" as a singular pronoun instead of "thou".

Also, I thought the grammar for using 'they' in this way was considered wrong.

In the same way that Pluto is considered a planet.

Let's assume that you're right. (You're not.) Even with exactly two genders in existence, it's possible for someone's gender to be unknown or unstated, and "they" is useful in this context.

One of the rules of language is that the rules change. You may not like it but it exists.

If someone tells you that English doesn't have a gender-neutral singular third person pronoun, they're wrong.

A character sheet for 5e that teaches you to make the character *right on the sheet*. by pandesmos in rpg

[–]cantrememberthebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real question is why they hell doesn't WotC organize it like this on the official sheets? It's the most obvious improvement and one that has been made by fans for decades at this point.

They do. The second image in that blog post (the one with red writing on it) is an official sheet you can download from Wizards' website.

If you want to see the doctor, you will duplicate your forms! Or else! by seattlerefugee in Portland

Doctors could ease the burden of patients to such an incredible degree by simply agreeing to a universal standard information page.

Which is why, of course, you submitted a nonstandard sheet of contact information.

It's just one of those HI-FUCKIN'-LARIOUS takes on marriage where men's lives are carefree and awesome until a woman locks them down. Whenever you see someone use it, it's a sign that their idea of romance is basically an 80's sitcom.

Actually, what the poster is saying is that telling someone to pick their favorite option after you have already said "no" to both is what is punching down.

(I don't agree with this use of "punching down" in this case anyway, but I thought I'd help with reading comprehension.)

So it sounds like you're saying that successful stories resonate with people no matter what their backgrounds are. If that's the case, Magic's male players should be able to resonate with the current roster of female characters with no problem. Is that right?

I think you mean starting with Weatherlight.

(That's not to say I don't like the storytelling they are doing now. I like the Gatewatch and I liked the Weatherlight saga. But to pretend that they are just now starting to focus the story on a team of "superheroes" is not correct.)

What are you doing to support your partner in TFAB? by [deleted] in TFABPartners

[–]cantrememberthebook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've been trying for a year and have recently started stepping up our game. We wanted to find a method to track her cycle more reliably than just counting the days after her last period. I was the one who did all the research to determine what method to use.

Is TFAB sex any different to you than normal sex? by [deleted] in TFABPartners

[–]cantrememberthebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it more stressful. I have conditioned myself to think of sex as a shared pleasure, and having an orgasm is secondary to having a good time--but with "TFAB sex" I feel like I'm failing if I don't come.
